Life got a little screwed so bad I started an extreme long form meditation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:11 PM PST

Welp got fired, car broke down, got kicked out, and crippling anxiety all at the same time. Besides trying a different form of meditation that I research once a week for 20 minutes. I started mindful breathing through nose in for 6 seconds inhale 7 seconds exhale, all day long. I pledge to commit a full year. Now sometimes I slip out of the state, but so far only when sleeping and when awake if I slip I usually return quickly by breath within 20 minutes. Been doing this for a month so far ocassionally with weed at nignt. Well I noticed my hearing and vision are better, in fact too good. Found out that anxiety feeling was there for a reason. To remove anxiety you need to move, and do something. Stretch, or clean and eventually that feeling will go away and the mind sorts itself out. Got my health sorted out, got sun, ran, stopped eating shit. Found out I missed playing piano. Got my keyboard and started practicing again. Found out I actually hate drinking. Just completely stopped drinking. Found out Iroh was right about tea. Found out all we are all our senses. Went to gym and legitimately look like I am on roids. Found out running isn't too bad. Found out I should have listened to my grandpa on Sauna use (its some good shit 180F for 2 30 minutes after eating a couple kiwis). TBH this is some life changing stuff. Oh yea and posture got corrected. Also time is really damn slow now. Feels like a year has passed in a month and a half.

How do I get started if I lack attention and motivation? My mind is not my own, it is just my emotions.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:51 AM PST

I'm having a bad day. And I wish I knew how to control my emotions better. I'm so tired and exhausted from everything happening around me. I know meditation would help me. I also suffer from anxiety, which doesn't help. I know meditation is a skill that needs to be practiced, and even just a little bit here and there helps.

I feel so defeated when I have my anger take control, or my thoughts spiral without having the ability to stop them. I've always been an over thinker, and it's helped me do well in my career as an analyst, but in every day life, it comes with consequences.

I've mediated before but never kept up with it. I have a paid subscription to Headspace. I'm looking for tips on how to stay with it when I don't feel like leaning into my thoughts. Days like today. Days where I want to ignore my thoughts instead of see them for what they are, and then move on.

Edit: Thank you so much. I honestly was not sure what to expect, but I am truly so thankful for everyone's responses. I've been reading through as many as I can. I appreciate everyone taking the time to share their thoughts and knowledge with me. I'm hoping to use some of this new advice to better my practice, and be more mindful.

Just completed 7th day of Daily meditation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:29 PM PST

I had a thought of meditating daily from last 8 months, but never gave it a try. I used to do at like one or two times per month and later forget about it. This November, I made a vow that I'll complete 30 days of daily meditation no matter what happens. It's been 7 days already, I can see clearly through my thoughts and emotions than ever before . This is helping me a lot with anxiety and coping with bad habits. I know 7 days is not something to Brag about, but I just wanted to shout out to all those beginners like me that it really is a life changer. Make it a habit and you'll never regret it. *"You'll never know whether you like it or not without giving it a try" *

Meditation For Trauma Victim Who Can't Be Left Alone With Their Thoughts

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:21 PM PST

My (29m) wife (28f) suffers from severe anxiety, depression, and ptsd to the point where she constantly has to have some form of distracting noise going on, whether it's engaging conversation or background noise, usually in the form of youtube videos. Since most of her mental energy is spent keeping her mind from wandering and thus triggering an anxiety attack, I'm looking for something to help relax her mental state and ease at least some of the pressure that's constantly straining her mind.

One of the more seemingly obvious solutions is meditation. The tricky thing is that I'm having trouble finding a meditation that is guided/engaging enough for her. Meditation designed for trauma victims usually involves confronting the root of the trauma, which in her case is completely out of the question.

Does anyone know of any particular meditation routines that are heavily guided (or in some way similar) enough to help a trauma victim achieve better peace of mind?

    Just had the weirdest experience

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:39 PM PST

While meditating, my mind started to wonder off a bit. Nothing too weird at first. But then, it's like my mind completely went blank. There wasn't anything in my head, empty. It was so... dreadful. It felt so lonely, like I realized just how lonely everything feels when I'm not doing something. All at once a wave of dread hit me. Yet at the same time, it was peaceful. Has this happened with anyone else?

How to Shrink Like an Ice-Cube in the Sink

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:06 PM PST

Sit down in your meditation spot. Back straight. Breathe from your belly. Eyes closed. Relax.

Put your Light on the feeling of breath in the tip of your nose.

(Give the end of your nose a little pinch. Feel that? That's where you put it).

The game is to hold your Light on the tip of your nose without moving it.

You will get distracted. Your Light will get drawn to other things. You will have all kinds of interesting thoughts, feelings, etc. You will daydream.

Whenever you catch yourself doing that, put your Light right back on the tip of your nose again.

Keep it there as perfectly as you can.

That's it. That's the whole technique.

    Phone Use Undoing Meditation Benefits?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:35 AM PST

Something I think a lot about... if I have a daily meditation practice it definitely adds mental health benefits to my life. But, if my smartphone use is out of control... it seems like these benefits are undone. For example, if I meditate 15 minutes a day, but use my phone for 5-7hrs... it feels like those 15 minutes of focus and peace are undone by the hours and hours of scattered dopamine-hunting on my phone.

Certainly, I've got to work on my phone-addiction and become more mindful of how much I use my phone.

Does anyone else think about this?

How do I convince myself meditation can help me?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:06 PM PST

I've been told to meditate by multiple therapists to help with my extreme emotions due to bipolar and borderline. Its even part of dbt.

But I hate it! Doing breathing exercises make me cry. I can't get myself to practice regularly because I dread it so much.

Trying to write this post is triggering me, but I am doing bad and I don't have a therapist right now and I don't know what to do.

Should I just give up on meditation and focus on something else?

Do you know who you truly are? Or are you from the Truth afar? If the Truth you must find... First, you must Transcend the Mind!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:24 AM PST

We think that our mind is king. We think it is everything! This is the most dangerous illusion of our life. Our mind is our biggest enemy. While it is the software of our body, and we cannot do without it, it stops us from realizing the truth of who we are, as it bombards us with about 50,000 thoughts in a day. This makes us sink into regret and fear as we swing to a past that is gone, and a future not yet born. If we want to find out the true meaning of life, we must go on a quest. We must use our intellect which is a distinctly different domain of our subtle body. It is the intellect that controls thoughts of the mind and prevents them from becoming feelings and actions. If we do not live by the intellect, we will be doomed!

How long do you meditate for?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:48 PM PST

Just checking with everyone, how long is a good session for you personally? There are some days I struggle with 10 minutes even though it has gotten easier.

Also how long did it get you to get to the point you are in currently if you are doing longer sessions than before?

Looking forward to hearing from you

I'm wondering what everyone's opinions are. I think he would be much less negative, blaming and maybe not hold his ego so tight. It would be interesting to see and possible the most valid proof of change that meditation causes ever 😂😂

    Looking for help with meditation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:39 PM PST

I am new to meditation, in fact I have not done it yet. However, I'm looking into working on my mind and body and I think meditation will be a very good start for my mind. With that being said I think it would be beneficial for someone who knows what they are doing to tell me what to do maybe in a discord call or some type of communication where I can focus and listen. I'm going to be making this a part of my day as a improve myself so I just need to find a time in the morning to set my mind right, hence meditation. If anyone out there is experienced with meditation and willing to help me get started I would love to hear back from you! Again very inexperienced but I think I just need a kick start so I don't have to focus on reading something while I try and begin focusing on it.

    Hard time motivating

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:28 PM PST

I began meditating about a month ago and tried to do 5 minutes or more every morning. That went really well for a while, and one day I couldn't sit still for even 2 minutes. My mind was all over the place, I couldn't sit still. I was starting to feel like meditation was getting more comfortable for me, so I am confused as to what might have caused this somewhat sudden change. Anybody have a similar experience or a guess as to the cause?

    Electric sensitivity during meditation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:40 PM PST

This morning, nearing the end of meditating, something clicked off or on within my house which I heard. I believe it may have been the hot water heater, or fridge, dryer...

Immediately as I heard it I felt an electric pulse throughout my body. I had never felt that/noticed that feeling before. I thought it was interesting because I have heard about some people who are highly sensitive to electrical fields (which I have never been) and was wondering if it was a similar experience.

Regardless, it was an interesting experience of feeling the energy fields around me that I know are there but cannot see.

How do I transition from guided meditation to real meditation?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:23 AM PST

I've been meditating probably 6 weeks now. I started out with headspace and then moved to the balance app. I was really loving meditating with the balance app when it was just guiding me through breath focus and body scans, but as I get further along, its been getting weirder.

Its now having me do things like posture focus and awareness of surroundings. Its just not quite what I'm looking for. My problem is, I find it very difficult to meditate on my own still. With guided meditation, there was always a consistent voice to guide me back to what I'm supposed to be doing.

When I set a time and try to meditate on my own. It goes something like this.

Breath focus -> start thinking about something -> oops I'm not supposed to be thinking -> breath focus - repeat

I don't really feel like I'm meditating. It feels like I'm trying and failing to meditate.

Do I have to choose between meditation and creativity?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:25 PM PST

I'm a creative person, and my job and hobbies, which I absolutely love, require me to be constantly coming up with new ideas and creative solutions even when I'm not on the job e.g when I'm in the shower, when I go for a walk, letting things stew around in the back of my mind.

How can I still do this if meditation teaches me to have a quieter mind and fewer thoughts? Do I have to choose between meditation and creativity?

What is it like to/how do you simply observe your thoughts?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:19 PM PST

I feel like this is self explanatory, but I feel like I engage more than observe...that's why I ask.

How to make a meditation program or plan?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:39 PM PST

I have a lot of issues social anxiety disorder, health issues, financial problems, last semester in university in a major I dont like, and I am very frustrated that despite my best efforts I have not been able to change a lot of things in my life.

I know that meditation is scientifically proven to help with stress, frustration, anxiety, anger and a ton of issues but I don't know how to start or how to continue. I searched for youtube and there are tons of videos. I listened to one meditation today and it helped a bit but then whats next? Do I search for a new meditation to listen to tomorrow? Its kind of confusing and I would be very thankful if someone can help me with this issue.

    Thanks in advance!

    Proper belly breathing

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:37 PM PST

So obviously the key to meditation is proper breathing technique, however I struggle mightily to breathe through my belly. I simply can't get enough air in my lungs by breathing with my belly and I don't know why this is so. I can only take deep breaths when my lungs inflate first and my stomach sinks. any tips or exercises I can do to help myself start breathing properly?

    Advice for first meditation retreat

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:12 PM PST

I'm thinking about going on my first retreat next month but I'm new to meditation and looking for some advice.

I dabbled in meditation on and off over the years but just started a pretty regular practice for the first time 5 months ago, meditating 10-15 minutes a day, sometimes twice a day to manage anxiety. I use Insight Timer, both guided and timers, and have done a couple virtual community meditations on zoom.

I've wanted to go on a retreat for years and finally feel like I'm more ready now that I have some foundation of a practice. But I'm a bit nervous since I haven't meditated longer than one or two 25 minute sessions before and am so new to it. Does anyone have advice for how I could best prepare for a retreat? I'm planning to slowly increase my daily sessions until then, but would appreciate any other tips! Or maybe I'm overthinking this and should just throw myself into the new experience and allow myself to learn from it?

I'm trying to decide between a 3 day Vipassana retreat and a 5 day one. Both are virtual but hosted out of a local retreat center renting solo cabins (so that will also be different from a typical retreat, I imagine). If anyone has experience with Spirit Rock Center or InsightLA retreats I would love to hear about it! Trying to decide which one to do. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Head being pulled to left while meditating

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:19 PM PST

    Hello,

I started meditating recently and I had a strange feeling while meditating today. It felt like my head was being pulled down to my left shoulder, as if my head was leaning all the way to my left. I opened my eyes a little and my head was still straight up but didn't feel like it. It kept happening the rest of the meditation. Is that normal and do you know why I may have experienced that? Thank you!

    Focus and Meditation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:00 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I have ADHD but I don't take medication for it. I have been practicing meditation quite regularly for a few months now. I still think i'm a novice but I am really enjoying it so far.

I was wondering if someone can elaborate on the benefits meditation can have on focus or concentration as this is something I struggle with. Is there maybe some sort of technique that can improve the benifits?
