[COMP] 30 minutes of practice in 30 seconds

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:53 AM PST

COMP: After around 6 weeks of at home yoga I managed my first headstand today. Had to come back later on in the day to check it wasn’t a fluke, which explains the lack of workout gear...

[COMP] Ustrasana (Intermediate Series), really enjoying my daily practice as of lately!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:00 AM PST

Now I get the whole hypermobility thing.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:59 AM PST

I used to roll my third eye at the phrase "and for you hypermobile folks, remember to keep your knee slightly bent".

Poses requiring flexibility came easy for me, and I dove in: oversplits, contortion-like backbends, pretzely twists. I thought this was a sign that my practice was advancing. But at the same time, I was intermittently struggling with feelings of instability, pain, and snapping sensations in my hips and low back. I even saw a physical therapist at one point. Stretching seemed to help in the moment, so the worse they got, the more I contorted my body.

The next sign of trouble came when I started working on my middle splits. While everything else came incredibly easy, my middle splits were around 8 inches off the ground. I very quickly developed worsening hip and glute pain. I was constantly feeling like something was out of place and tried twisting and moving the joint in numerous ways to get relief.

Over the summer, my regular yoga class has been on hold, and I had an incredibly busy academic / work schedule that put me out of practice for a while. I was emotionally and physically miserable without my practice.

But here's where the realization hit. All of my joint pains, aches, pops, and feelings of instability disappeared! I was absolutely amazed. This led me to realize just how much of that part of my practice was about ego rather than nourishing movement.

Now, I keep a block under my hips in hanumanasana and my knee bent at a 45 (vs 90) degree angle in pigeon. I don't set blocks in front of my feet to overstretch my forward fold. Rather than overstretching those joints, I now strive to strengthen them with micro-movements and isometric holds.

If you're reading this and recognize your own story, I'd love to hear your own journey with flexibility. Have a lovely day and a nourishing practice.

If I goto India will I find my guru? The real story from Indian people.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:04 PM PST

Don't come here. I beg you. My family members have been scammed out of all their wealth and and have become like deluded robots who don't feel or see. I lost my near and dear ones to the pernicious influence of these gurus. https://old.reddit.com/r/india/comments/gyd7s0/i_want_to_change_my_life/ftbeit0/

There's more comments. Good stuff there. Go ask them r/india "No place, no person can transform your life. Only you can."

What does your daily yoga practice look like these days?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:25 PM PST

Apologies if this has already been explored several times on this sub. My practice looks a lot different than it did at this time last year because of the pandemic.

I used to go to a hot vinyasa studio every day to practice with an instructor in a group setting, but with the pandemic I'm at home a lot more. Sometimes I feel a bit lost!

What do your daily practices look like? Do you practice with a video? Do you build your own flows or work on certain poses/areas each day? Still going to the studio?

On the hunt for my favorite Savasana song

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:53 PM PST

A long time ago, my mom and I used to go to yoga class together. For years, we heard the same song during Savasana every time. I never thought to ask the name of it. I am going to describe it as best I can and let's see if we can find this song and take me back to those simpler days.

The song is sung by a man. His voice is quite rough and gravelly. The only line I remember (written phonetically) is "buddy, rum, rum, rum". He would repeat that line several times in a row. There was a consistent buzz/white noise that was underneath the vocals and some other quiet instruments.

    Thank you and much love!

    First day trying yoga

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 11:01 AM PST

I just started yoga at home and downloaded an ebook with thorough information in regards to poses, breathing techniques, chakra control and all that other fun stuff. I was looking through the standing poses to start off with today "ayyyy these look fairly easy they shouldn't be too hard" I thought to myself, oh was I sadly mistaken, simply the first pose (mountain pose) I felt an overwhelming sensation, it felt like my whole body was bout ready to collapse, this strong emotional sensation ran through my head and completely shut me down, I had to sit down for a second because it felt like I was loosing consciousness for a second. I'm thinking it's the years I've neglected to take care of my body and issues with underlying trauma I've been avoiding that may be the root cause. Partly in due to toxic masculinity of saying it's ok or don't worry it will fix itself, but slowly becoming aware of them and addressing them. I was wondering is it normal to feel such sensations when starting out or is it just all in my head?

Down Dog App Suite Yoga & HIIT Question

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Hi Everyone!

This community inspired me to dive into yoga and I've been doing the Down Dog yoga app for a month now. I'd like to integrate some HIIT for cardio burning and losing some fat, however, I can't figure out a warm up option before the workout. Does anyone use this app? Or if you do use it, do you do a 10 minute Yoga before HIIT?

    Thanks!

    Knee and wrist pain

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:02 AM PST

I had and still have mild knee in my pain and my wrist for like 8 years now both only on the right side (also have mild scoliosis i dont know if the other pains occured because of that) my right knee hurts only in positions like pidgeon and in simple crossed legs. Now i know my limits and dont push myself but I am afraid that I might have a medial meniscus or ligament damage.

My bigger problem is with my right wrist it hurts one week and then doesnt in the next one, the pain is on the top radial side when it hurst it is hard to be in poses like plank or even table top on worse days. I warm them up before practice but somedays they just cant keep up.

Please if you have any more accurate idea what are my pains more importantly how could i treat them let me know I really like yoga and I would like to get better and better at it, and I need to overcome these somehow thanks in advance!!

    Breathing problems

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:48 PM PST

Hey I know how important proper breathwork would be for my practice but there are a few poses that makes my sinuses swell instantly like forvard bend, or childs pose and a few more through a regular practice.I am having a hard time breathing while I am trying to sleep on my back too.

I have checked it out multiple times had 2 sinus and one septum surgeries still not perfect.. I am allergic to pollen which is like hell but only for a month in late spring and also a little bit to dust.

Please share if you have any idea how could I overcome this problem it is really bothering me since its hard to meditate or stay calm through a yoga practice..

    Durable Cork Mat?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:29 PM PST

I recently bought a cork mat off amazon by hautest health and it was really comfortable to use but its peeling already after 1 month indoor light use. I would like to buy a new one but am not sure which brand is more durable? Or is this just inevitable for cork mats since its a thin layer of cork glued to rubber?

What am I supposed to do when following videos and I am completely new?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:17 PM PST

I am starting yoga this week. Got a mat from Jade and have been watching videos mainly from someone on Youtube called Adriene.

Even in beginner videos I can't do half the stuff she does. I am super stiff in every part of my body and not very flexible at all but I want to that is why I am starting yoga.

Am I supposed to just follow exactly what she does, but just stop at like 1/3 of the pose for how ever far I can go? Sometimes I don't even feel anything when I do this, just that my body won't go any more and it seems the tension blocking me isn't even in one spot like she explains should be stretching..

Cow Face legs and sciatica flare up?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:24 AM PST

I never new the sciatica nerve existed until recently when I was trying to get into cow pose and think I felt it. I've been working really hard on hip openers lately because they're really tight and I was doing a yin practice in cow pose when I felt a sharp pain behind my thigh just below my butt on one side only. I left the pose and forgot about it until I attempted the pose again a few days later. Same side. Same pain. I only feel it in this exact pose. Is this a thing? Should I just avoid cow face for now? I'm so new to this.
