It's taken me 4 years of yoga for my heels to touch the ground in downward dog and I am so proud!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:03 AM PST

I have been dabbling in yoga on and off and I haven't been able to afford classes so i mainly do yoga with adriene and my own self-directed stuff. I felt quite intimidated by this community because everyone seemed to be doing awesome poses that i only had vague hopes for when I have the time to dedicate.

Since lockdown i decided to do 5 mins in the morning and 5 mins in the evening everyday, then suddenly i noticed my heels were touching the floor in downward dog! I was over the moon! I thought my body just wasn't able to do it and there are some days i still can't do it, which is fine, but i can't believe it. It just goes to show, have patience with yourself and turn up, even if it's for the smallest amount of time.

Edit: Thanks for all the comments and tips! I do notice that when i breathe deeply, push away from the ground, lift my hips high, bend deeply then out of the dog, turn out my elbows, open my shoulder blades, etc my heels lift back off. I think the post is more a celebration of realising how far my flexibility has come, rather than my heels touching while holding a 'perfect' downward dog. It's a celebration of the fact that even after 4 years of an on off relationship with yoga, she's worth the commitment.

    You know that feeling...

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:33 AM PST

when you're in a pose and you actually get it for the first time?? Like not physically get in it and hold it, but fully understand what every part of your body should be doing? I've been able to hold crow for 7-10 seconds for a couple months but it's felt like a ton of work, and this morning I don't know what changed in my mind or body but I actually FELT my abs engage as if my stomach was reaching through my back for the ceiling. I had that moment of "OHHHH. THAT'S what they mean by that!" I'm pretty cognizant of core engagement but I think I've been trying to control my body the wrong direction, maybe? Anyway recognizing the exact feeling is so motivating to keep working hard. Little victories!

    Progressing your practice

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:48 PM PST

Wondering if anyone has made something like a three or four day split for their practice so that each day they're working on a different aspect of the physical Asana? A bit like a leg day at the gym?

Just beat COVID, looking for recovery yoga recommendations

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:46 PM PST

Hello, everyone! So about three weeks ago I came down with COVID-19 and it really kicked my butt. I am 30 and otherwise healthy, but it was definitely a rough few weeks and I had to do a lot of resting at home. I wasn't able to do my two favorite things: yoga and hiking, and I BARELY moved because any movement exhausted me. I love vinyasa/power yoga and yoga with a lot of movement and strength moves, so this was out of the question while I was sick. Even though I have recovered and am better, my muscles feel super weak and I feel pretty out of touch with my yoga practice. What are some of your favorite recovery flows/videos that you would recommend for getting back in to the practice? Thank you and namaste!

What style does "Yoga with Adriene" use?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:17 PM PST

New to yoga, using her videos to help learn a few poses. Best option while I'm stuck at home for the time being. Curious as to what makes up most of her routine?

    Ananda Marga Experience

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:04 PM PST

Has anyone done a retreat at an Ananda Marga center? Specifically, I am thinking of doing the one in Korea but see that they are also all over the world. However, there's not a whole lot of info online about it so I was wondering if anyone has any insight on the practice.

    Online/streaming partner yoga suggestions?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:32 PM PST

Hey reddit, Looking for an app/streaming service that offers partner yoga. I looked through the resources in the subreddit and didn't see anything specific.

I've been using down dog for about a year and really like it, it'd be great if they also offered partner yoga. If you know of a similar service that does, my partner and I would greatly appreciate it!

What yoga pose is this called?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:46 PM PST

    https://images.app.goo.gl/AiJdsM3h97QsuE3x5

You start off like this and then eventually put your feet together and bring your legs up while your arms are still binded.

Can't for the life of me find it online or remember what it's called.

    TIA!

Yoga to relieve kink in neck?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:56 PM PST

Hey guys! I've been a bit out of practice as all of my free time from work has been spent sleeping lately, but I woke up yesterday with a wicked kink in my neck, barely able to move it. Does anyone know some gentle poses and movements to help with this? I've taken pain reliever and did some hot/cold therapy so it's not as bad now but still not fun!

How long roughly do you think it would take to go from complete beginner with no flexibility to flat like in the image?

At the moment I'm doing a 15 minute stretching routine twice a day.

Homeschooling 8 year old, Yoga for PE

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:03 PM PST

I am attempting to homeschool my 8yo daughter. I would like to teach her some basic meditation/yoga moves for about 30 minutes a day. The videos we have looked at are either babyish (for preschoolers) or beginner adult that goes too fast for her. Do any of you experienced yoga people have some recommendations for like 5 basic moves we can practice solo without the use of a youtube video. I would like to do yoga between her math block and her ELA block to help her destress between 2 major subjects. Any Ideas?

    Alternatives for wheel pose?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:08 AM PST

Hi guys! So i am about to have my YTT teaching exam soon & in the midst of finalising or rehearsing my sequence. It will be a backbend flow class leading to a wheel pose as the peak pose.

I have sent in my flow sequence for review & my teacher said it was good but also to ask me to bear in mind what alternatives i would prepare for someone who isn't able to push into a wheel pose even with a block modification.

I thought of tiger pose bc essentially what you're trying to achieve in wheel pose is engagement of back muscles, opening of chest/shoulders, & lengthening of quads/ hip flexors right? And tiger pose seem somewhat similar.

Any more thoughts beside bridge pose as well?

Can I do yoga even though both of my sciatica nerves are pinched?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 09:40 AM PST

I've never done yoga before but would like to try it because it could improve my flexibility. I have both of my sciatica pinched though. I don't want to aggressive the issue. I can't even do crunches without some pain.

    Tighter hips

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:23 PM PST

    Hi friends!

I have been in a yoga practice of different depths for years, and now I'm in my deepest I've ever been. I have been doing an hour-long practice about 5x a week now, and I've seen and felt so many differences on and off the mat. However, one difference I'm not loving and I'm wondering if it's normal. My hips feel tighter now than they did before. Thoughts/advice/feelings?

    Thank you!
