    Shaking while doing yoga

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:06 AM PST

I've been doing yoga since March. I'm not that flexible yet. I can touch my toes with a slight bend at the knees. When I try and push myself I self I start to shake. Is that normal? Should I push myself that much?

Youtube instructors who leave time for savasana in their videos?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:11 AM PST

Most of my favourite practices end abruptly and leave no time for savasana. I know they suggest staying there as long as needed, but I find it a bit disrupting to do that when I have to move to pause the video if autoplay is on. Also, I don't want to turn autoplay off because I actually enjoy the background music/noise, so the comfort of some background sounds in a prolonged video would be nice.

    Stretches for knees

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 08:31 PM PST

I'm currently dealing with tight tendons i my right knee, I am very active so I do know that that's probably what caused it. however I am a daily skateboarder and that's when the pain really peaks, simple things, just like squatting and straightening back up is quite difficult at times. Any suggestions for stretches or exercises ?

I am thinking about purchasing my wife an online YTT program for Christmas. Where do I go from here?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:21 PM PST

I apologize if this has been covered lately. The search didn't pull up any posts newer than 6 years.

First of all I am brand new to this subreddit and know the the basic equivalent of nothing about the practice. I've done a fair bit of research on the training process and have asked my wife a few questions, but that is it.

My wife has been practicing yoga for about 5 years but has never taken part in a class setting. Part of that is because we live in rural Arkansas. I did a quick Google search on Yoga Alliance and there doesn't appear to be a certifed teacher/studio within 70 or so miles. She would be interested in renting a space and holding classes in the evenings as a hobby/second income. She wouldn't be quitting her job and financial gain is not the main goal from this--more of a personal fulfillment aim.

I mention this because top tier certification is not something we would be looking for. Ideally it would be an affordable institution/progam where she could certify online and at her own pace and still be recognized as certifed with Yoga Alliance.

She mentioned that she practices Vinyasa and used the term "flow yoga" in the past. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations of a particular course or institute? Any tips or advice before we embark on this journey? Thank you, and "Namaste." (I've heard her say that before too)

The health & spiritual benefits of Yoga

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:14 AM PST

People misunderstand yoga. Most people think yoga is about body exercises, breathing techniques, which indeed have health and wellbeing benefits, just like going to a gym or doing any other exercise, for that matter. But the spiritual benefit of yoga comes only when we understand the true meaning of yoga. The word yoga comes from the word Yuj or union. It is not about the union of body, mind, heart, and Soul as people say it is. Yoga is union of the Soul with the Supreme Soul. It is being conscious of the Divine at all times. It is being connected with God and experiencing a state of eternal bliss and everlasting peace. Yoga is the way to Spiritual Enlightenment.

    Yoga/mindfulness retreat in Costa Rica

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:44 PM PST

I'm looking into booking a yoga retreat for January and I was wondering if anyone has been to any of the resorts in Costa Rica. I'm looking for a place with proximity to the beach and more than one yoga/mindfulness class per day.
The best option I've found is Blue Spirit, but they only have one yoga class per day.

    Thank you!!

Can't take classes. Should I quit?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:24 PM PST

I used to be quite sporty in my younger days, but for the last 10 years I've been sitting on my lazy overweight butt doing nothing but being constantly stressed out from my job. Two weeks ago I started doing daily Yoga via video lessons and I can safely say that I haven't felt this good in such a long time!

Then I decided to dig deeper and read through this sub's FAQs and posts. Now I'm scared shitless of continuing without taking classes. From the posts and comments you get the impression that what I'm doing is super dangerous, that I'm gonna do it all wrong, injure myself, mess up my posture for good and will never be able to do Yoga properly when incorrect poses become a habit.

I'm working the late shift and none of the yoga studios in my area offer classes or private lessons in my free-time slots. They're closed due to Covid anyway, so that rules out the option of any in-person courses at least until my next vacation in spring 2021.

Should I quit before I hurt myself, even though I feel much better? If I continue, what are the do's and don'ts? How to minimize the poor form/alignment risk?

Looking for versatile yoga mat to also function as standing desk mat

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 11:33 AM PST

    Hi there-

I live in a really small place and instead of spending space/money on two different mats, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding a mat than can serve as a dual function!

I looked on Amazon for yoga mats that are 3/4 to 1 inch thick (I know this isn't a common/typical thickness and I'm okay with that) but all of the reviews are mixed and tend to show photos of the mats quickly falling apart.

I really need something that's high in quality so that I can stand on it during the day as well while I work from my computer. Something thick enough to where I don't sink and hit the floor would be great!

I've also thought about just getting a standing desk mat and doing yoga on that. Has anyone tried it? Or maybe a doggie gel mat? I'm open to unconventional ideas!

    Thanks, S

    Awakening Yoga Academy YTT

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 06:56 AM PST

Hi, has anyone here taken the Awakening Yoga teacher trainings by Carling Harps/Patrick Beach? I am particularly interested in their 200H foundations training.

I have been practicing their classes every single day for quite a long time now and I only rarely take classes from other instructors or studios because I love their style and sequences so much so I would love to take my foundational course with them. I don't mind that it is online, because that's how I learned anyway and there's no way I would have had this opportunity to take a training with them in pre-covid life with me having to travel to see them and all.

Despite practicing for almost 4 years now, my asanas skill level is good (I can do arm balances like crow/crane/eka pada koundinyasana 1/2) but I can't do any bigger poses like handstands/forearm stands which if you've taken any of their classes, are definitely ingrained in their sequences.

To anyone who has taken their courses, does it REALLY matter if I can't do those poses? I know that in general, asana skill level shouldn't matter for teacher trainings -- but what about when it's part of the sequence that they will be teaching? Note there are definitely variations that are offered. I really really want to take this training, but I don't want to jump into something if it's a huge drawback that I can't do certain poses. Big honest truth please!

    History of yoga

What's the best yoga type for increasing lower body flexibility?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 10:36 PM PST

    Hi,

Recently found out I have hyperflexible joints which cause my muscles to tighten in my lower body. I was recommended yoga to improve the flexibility and strength in my lower body (mostly calves, hamstrings). The problem is I don't want to use apps/youtube because I get demotivated from it very quickly. I'd rather just go to classes.

So my question is, what sort of class should I be looking for?

There's so many different types that I don't even know where to begin.

    I appreciate any responses, thanks.

    Hi All,

I'm trying to do meditation to increase the focus and positivity but after 5 minutes or something I started to get headaches and feel tired (/negative). Can someone help me to guide some pre meditation yogas or anything else.
