Lower back doing all the stretching

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST

I have extremely tight hamstrings and am working on increasing their flexibility using great advice here. In the meantime I'm still having some issues in my usual yoga practice. When I'm in asanas that require hamstrings stretching, I feel my lower back stretching before my hamstrings. Eg seated forward bend, I start in bent knees so I can reach down my legs without being blocked by my hamstrings and as soon as I try to straighten them I feel a stretch in my lower back. With my uttanasana I do a bent knee version and fold carefully from the hips to avoid engaging my lower back but I do inevitably feel a pull there if I hold the pose. It's like my hamstrings don't even get the chance to improve as my back is dominating (and it doesn't feel good!) any tips for how I can stop my lower back getting involved or at least protect it from getting sore, while trying to increase hamstring flexibility?

[COMP] I’m finally strong enough to hold it for 30 seconds. Never give up.

    No BS handstand tips?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 11:08 AM PST

What are your best, no BS, foolproof, tried and true handstand tips?

I've been doing yoga for many years, I'd say I am intermediate/advanced level. In terms of inversions/balance poses, I can hold a headstand and crow comfortably but can't seem to master the handstand.

Specifically, I'm really struggling to get into the right alignment and shift my hips over my shoulders. (FWIW, I do have a strong core and I believe enough strength in my arms and shoulders)

If you also struggled with it and have any good tips, please let me know!!

Trying to increase my forward fold.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:03 AM PST

I'm quite inflexible in my wide legged fold (both seated and standing), and struggle to get my torso forward, or even stick my butt out. Just kind of feel stuck there and don't know how to progress. Any advice, tips or tricks anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated!

    Tree pose with slippery leggings?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 06:09 PM PST

    Hi r/yoga!

I have been doing yoga for years and tree pose is one that I've always struggled with. I'm trying so hard to grow this pose, but all of my leggings are so slippery.

How to I combat this to grow my practice? I don't have many problems when I wear shorts for practice, but I don't always want to wear shorts!

Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

    Pigeon pose numbness

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 08:16 PM PST

Whenever I really try to lean into a pigeon pose my toes start tingling and then my whole foot, and eventually up to like half way up my calf is tingly and sort of numb. What causes this? What can I do to alleviate it?

Any advice for teaching yoga to teens (9th grade)? I’m a recently certified 200 RYT and am teaching a 10 week Zoom Mindfullness and Yoga Series!

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 07:00 PM PST

Title pretty much says it all but folks out here who have specific experience working with this age group, about 14/15 years old, do you have any tips? So far they seem to really enjoy it but I'd like to be able to connect and engage with them beyond ice breakers.

(Side note this is really extra special for me because I graduated from this school years ago and to be able to give back in a time like this is awesome)

Should I, a female beginner, go to a Broga class?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:05 PM PST

So, let's get the obvious stuff out of the way, I hate the name Broga but my gym makes it very clear that the class is open to all genders so my gender isn't prohibited. The normal yoga classes are always fully booked as soon as bookings are available and in the two months that I've been there, there has never been a free space in a yoga class. There are however some spaces in the Broga classes.

My history is that I've done some yoga classes in the past and I did about half of a 30 day challenge with Adrienne in January before I fell off the wagon and never quite got back into it. I'm hoping that a class will give me a better routine and encourage me to restart a home practice in between classes. I have some health issues so I'm also hoping that having a teacher will help me learn how to use aids like blocks, straps and jellies (which I've only heard of today!)

My impression is that Broga is a challenging form of yoga that combines traditional yoga poses and some strength work. I think it may be more suitable to people who aren't so flexible and need more guidance on how to get comfortable in yoga poses, so possibly more beginner friendly? The class is run by a male personal trainer who is very well qualified in strength and conditioning.

Do you have any experience of Broga? Would you recommend it? Am I somehow supporting the patriarchy if I engage with this needless gender branding?

Yoga with Sculiosis-- Tips and advice?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:02 PM PST

Pretty much what the title says. I've been practicing yoga for exactly one year (started last December) and I practice every other day, give or take (mostly vinyasa / hatha). As I'm getting more intermediate and am starting to work on more advanced postures like inversions and arm balances, I'm wondering if there's anything I should do to account for my mild scoliosis & my legs being 2 different lengths (slightly).

I haven't seen any issues with this yet. Yoga has actually really helped, if anything-- I used to have bad upper back, neck, and shoulder pain constantly, which has really been alleviated since starting yoga. Also, weirdly, my back has always been very flexible despite the sculiosis. Still, since I'm completely self-taught because of the pandemic, I'm wary of going into more advanced territory because I don't want to exceed my limits and injure myself. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with this-- are there certain postures I should look out for, for instance?

    Challenging teachers

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:14 AM PST

Hi all. I'm looking for a challenging, upbeat, cadio-based yoga teacher. All the teachers I've found so far are not challenging at all. I want to fall apart before the session is over! I've been a fan of Dice Ida Klien, but even his stuff is often too easy from a strength perspective, or has a tendency to put too much stress on my knees. I love ladder flows, vinyasa, balancing poses, single-leg stuff, twists, and a good flow between poses; someone innovative but also difficult. I'm not looking for teachers who tend to hold easy poses forever, focus on breath work, or don't have a really strong core. Maybe someone who also strength trains regularly? I don't know, but this pandemic is really getting to me and I need to find someone who can beat me up! Thanks!

EDIT: thanks for all the great suggestions everyone! ❤️

    The Benefits of Community

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:05 PM PST

I know you may have seen a lot of posts such as this one, but I recently got back into yoga after a few months hiatus over the stress of nursing school, and I just wanted to celebrate my homecoming back to my mat with likeminded people.

After five days of continuous practice, I am already more myself. I practice self-control over emotions without feeling ashamed, manage my stress, and most of all--I'm beginning to love myself again.

Yoga pushes me out of my boundaries and challenges me not only physically but mentally. One of my favorite teacher sayings has been, "Can you feel the pain without reacting? Can you accept the burn without judgment?" These two questions have led me on a journey of self-discovery involving accepting the painful present as it is without judgment for feeling such sadness.

Heck--today I tried side crow for the first time and was successful because I tried. I almost felt ashamed that I didn't hit the full expression of the pose, but dangit I hovered for a split second and it was glorious. It was enough. I was enough.

The pandemic has been difficult for us all in multiple ways, but the self-compassion and self-love found in my yoga practice have been keeping me from crashing and burning.

What are some of your favorite sayings that you've heard in a yoga class? What are some of your moments where you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone, and in turn, learned how to do so off your mat?

[Help] Hip (groin?) pain in this position.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:41 PM PST

Hello, I'm asking for help. When I try to do this my bended leg will fall outwards and my hip will be stuck and my knee wil not be anywhere near my chest. It's impossible to make my upper leg touch my lower body and while forcing it I get pain in my groin that will last a few days to a week.

When I try to do it standing I can touch my lower body like this but still getting pain in my groin area (I'm not really sure if it is my groin).

What is going on here? I have tried different positions for a while but I'm still getting pain and not making any progress 😞. Why is my leg falling outwards? I think this is the biggest problem, am I missing some kind of range of motion?

    Liforme VS Yogi Bare

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 06:27 AM PST

This is another "help me chose a mat" post, although quite specific. I would like to try a new mat with alignment guidelines to improve my daily at home practice, and take with me to the studio when they reopen. I mostly practice hatha and vinyasa. Sometimes yin, never tried hot yoga and not really planning to.

I was leaning towards splurging on a Liforme and have read possibly every post on that mat, however most reviews are from people who just got the mat and love it, there are not a lot of reviews past a few months of use, and I've read some people say it does not go the distance, and loses its grip after a few months. If I am spending 140€ on a mat, I would like to use it for at least 5 years ... The other one I am looking at is the Yogi Bare paws mat. It does not have 45 degree lines, but it is quite cheaper (although not cheap either) : 79€. However there are not a lot of reviews on this mat here. Do any of you guys have this mat ? Do you like it ? Is it durable ? Do you know how it compares to the Liforme ? Any reviews from Liforme long-time users ?

TLDR : I am hesitant to splurge on a Liforme when I've heard that it is not durable, and would love to hear how the Yogi Bare mats compare
