Yoga: For 15 years I’ve done ‘informal Room Yoga’ - basically one super-long 60min+ Sun Salute cycle fully sinking into each pose for 10min+, listening to tunes/watching stuff on my phone all the way. It was bliss in ‘05, and it’s bliss now. Yoga gives me life, and I f*cking love it. Happy 2021, friends!

    Crow Pose... into handstand

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:07 PM PST

Ok so I am a novice for sure but I am able to do my crow pose and maintain for a good while. I was wondering if anyone knows any good technique on how to advance into a handstand from this.

Question about hypermobility in joints? Specifically the hips and lower back

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:33 AM PST

Hi guys, I know there are already posts on "hypermobility" in this sub but I couldn't find a post for some specific questions I have?

The first thing is that my lower back always hurts after doing backbendy things (like a standing back bend, or camel). I can do them but I don't like to because it hurts my back... What is the solution for this? Is it to try and bend more from my upper back or is it that I'm just not aware of which muscles I should be engaging properly? For what it's worth I try to use my glutes to push my hips forwards, but my back still hurts.

The other one is that my hips seem to naturally turn out, with my knees/toes pointing outwards (like in ballet). Is that fine or should I try to keep my toes pointing straight for poses like downward dog? Is it bad for my knees/hips in the long term? I haven't noticed any strain yet.

    Thanks!

Should feet be straight or at an angle in chair pose (or either)?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 08:51 AM PST

I've always done chair pose with my feet hips-width distance apart, and at a slight angle with my toes pointing outward. I just noticed today that my video instructor (Five Parks Yoga) does it with her feet straight, and points out that your feet need to be straight.

I could've sworn another instructor said to keep feet pointed slightly outward when I first started yoga, but I'm not sure now. Can you do it either way? I seem to be more stable with my feel pointed slightly outward, which means I can engage my glutes more.

Also, why are instructors always urging you to have your feet together, UNLESS you have back issues? I don't find the pose more difficult with my feet together. I feel more wobbly, but that means I can't engage my muscles as much because I'm concentrating on not wobbling.

Whilst stuck at hoome... can you recommend any resources for me to learn beginner/intermediate Ashtanga?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:28 PM PST

I'm cracking up at home. I'm having some serious exercise withdrawal. Due to the lockdowns I can't go diving, I can't go rock climbing. I was throwing kettlebells around and arguing with battleropes before and I was scratching that itch but I've caused some serious back problems working from home on a shitty chair and generally being less active sat on my ass watching Netflix.

Can you recommend any good resources for me to be able to learn from start to finish? Youtube just doesn't cut it there isn't enough tuition on form and technique. I'm happy to spend money. I've been using Glo recently to go through stretching evercises- I don't know if you can suggest some good teachers on there.

It's good for my head too. I was going to lessons before all of this started but I haven't learned enough. I've used meditation throughout my whole adult life so getting a workout in at the same time is always great.

Q: Parallette Bars & Arm Balances

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:14 AM PST

Are more advanced arm balances (like dragonfly pose and EKA) transferable to parallette bars and slanted handstand blocks?

I know crow pose and handstands can be done on bars, but I'm not sure for more intricate poses. I'm looking for ways to start a more gentle arm balance practice after a now healed wrist injury.

Which type of yoga is best for trauma release?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:30 AM PST

I have always been interested in kundalini yoga as I've experienced an awakening many years ago. Though that is mainly focussing on breathwork than poses. Can someone please clarify what the best yoga modality would be for trauma?

Question about breath, and tension in poses

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:41 PM PST

I'm trying to reconfigure my practice to be more efficient .

I notice that I hold poses in a very tense way , is this correct? During the pose I'm thinking about engaging all all my muscles, stretching my spine but I'm wondering if this is actually helping or hurting my practice . I try to focus on breath ,I notice that in my tense-ness it's hard to breath. Not like I'm suffocating, but such as it requires muscle, almost, to breath smoothly. Not sure if this is efficient, please tell me what you think .

Edit/tdlr: do you exert maximum physical effort into each pose ? Even if you struggle? Or are you more gentle with your practice ?

Any recommendations for good and affordable bangles?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:25 PM PST

I'm hoping to find a good bangle for under $100 that can, preferably, be comfortably placed and stay between my shoulder and elbow, and not need to be removing to sleep or play sports

I've heard they can be made without gold which makes them a lot more affordable and that some people use a different metal to replace gold and silver so that it is copper and that other metal.

I'm searching online but I can't afford the bangles that I'm finding (I'm saving up for 2 ayahuasca ceremonies. I want a bangle and need it due to my sensitivity to vibrations, but can't spend much)
