Poor circulation(?) and knee pain during practice

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:39 PM PST

Hi all! I do yoga everyday, usually flow or strength building practices, but I've noticed that I seem to have very poor circulation. When I sit in a cross legged position or other certain positions for too long my feet and legs start to go numb. Also, when doing lunges I have extreme pain in my knee that's lowered to the ground if I hold the pose for too long. Was wondering if anyone else experiences this? Should I be stretching more before practice?

App to get started at home?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 05:40 PM PST

Since I can't really go to a studio with this covid thing I've been wanting to try and get started at home, problem is most of the random youtube videos I watch aren't the best, they go fast, I have to strain my neck to see what they're doing because the talked to fast/quiet etc... so I was wondering if any of you fine folk have a particular resource that you use to do yoga, app or channel, ideal free or at least cheap, cause you know, covid...

I’m trying to learn the front splits and am running into problems.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:37 PM PST

Yoga gurus please help! I'm trying to learn how to do the splits and it's been about a week of deep stretching & following along with lower body flexibility YouTube videos.

I feel like I'm getting further away from where I started before. Could this be because I'm sore? I don't want to force myself to go lower if it's tense but I also feel like I'm working backwards from the stretching.

Also, whenever I'm stretching my hip flexors I feel like I HAVE to pop to joint in my hip. It's a similar feeling to when my neck or shoulders are feeling tight and I have to crack them to make it feel better. What does this mean ?

    Hip soreness that’s lasted weeks

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 11:25 AM PST

I've been practicing daily at home since about April. I use The Underbelly app by Jessamyn Stanley, which is geared towards beginners and larger bodies. I'm at the point now where I'm pretty comfortable with most of the routines. (For those unfamiliar, she has 30 classes of approximately 30 min each classified under various elemental names, and some newer content that's generally shorter and even easier.) I mainly do the classes in the Earth and Fire series, which are the most challenging.

I usually do 1-2 classes a day, and if I just do one, I typically also just do some solo stuff based on what feels good that day. So my practice is usually 45-60 minutes daily. I also do kettlebells every other day but I haven't upped the weight or really changed my sequence at all in months. I rarely break a sweat anymore doing yoga, especially since the room I exercise in tends to be cold. So I don't feel I'm overdoing it. I know my way around most of the poses in the UB classes (though headstand and wheel remain elusive). I mostly focus now on getting more fluid and deeper into the postures. So I'm very much a beginner, but pretty ok with the basics.

Early on I would have a small bit of muscle soreness or wrist soreness as my wrists got used to bearing more weight, but it was never very bothersome or even that noticeable, and it would be gone in 2-3 days.

For about a month now, I have had some hip soreness on the right side. I haven't really done anything different as far as I can tell. It's hard to explain, I feel soreness when I get up from sitting (that's when I have the most sensation) but I also feel it mildly in some parts of my stride when I walk. I feel it most when I push my hip to the right. It's not unbearable, it's just annoying. But I have never had post-exercise soreness linger this long.

Because I'm isolated at home and have been for months, my anxiety has been out of control this year. I'm kind of becoming a hypochondriac. I definitely have tight hips, and I am working on lunges, pigeon, etc., to lumber up but I have been doing that all along for months now and it's only recently I've had this pain. What's weird is that it's just not subsiding. It's not so bad I need painkillers, and going to the doctor freaks me out right now because I don't want to leave my house at all during Covid, much less to go to a place where I may encounter sick people.

Is this a normal part of "opening up the hips"? Have I maybe gotten to a point where I'm stretching deeper and finally "hitting" the areas I need to loosen up? Just curious if this part of the process or if I'm overdoing it. Other than this, yoga has helped me feel better than I have in years and has really helped improve my mobility and posture after years of having a sedentary job.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Active or passive flexibility? Is one better than the other?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 05:06 PM PST

I wasn't sure if active flexibility indirectly also improves passive, or if I needed to do both individually. I'm not trying to do splits or anything that requires crazy flexibility overall, just want my joints and muscles to be healthy. My main goal is to keep it short, sweet and effective. Something I can do daily and not get overwhelmed. I still have strength training and core to do individually, and stretching isn't my my favorite thing to do lol

    Any recommendations for wrist-free yoga?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 02:26 PM PST

Hello, I've given myself a wrist injury from yoga (for the second time) and it now hurts to put any kind of weight on my wrist (e.g. plank, pushup, those kinds of things).

I think I will need to let it rest for some time and have been looking for wrist-free yoga videos, but I often feel they are not challenging enough and it just doesn't feel the same. I miss my yoga and getting my heart rate up.

Has anyone been through something like this and maybe have some video recommendations or other advice?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Cold weather breaks

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:48 AM PST

I live in a warm place and we're just getting cold weather. I've way scaled down my practice since it started getting colder bc yoga doesn't seem as appealing now that it's cold, even if I know my body and mind would appreciate it. Do y'all have some tricks to make your practice more appealing once the weather gets a bit colder?

2 months new to yoga and my wrists HURT. HELP.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:52 AM PST

Hello all! I've recently started up yoga for the first time ever back in October (I am very new to this). I've been taking classes at a local gym where they teach mostly hot yoga (vinyasa, pranayama, etc.) with some classes being more intense than others. I go about 2-3 times weekly and don't really practice at home (although I really want to). My biggest obstacle right now is pain in my wrists. Any position that requires you to balance on your hand or push against them (i.e. downward dog), shooting pain resonates from my wrists with any pressure. I've been told to use to blocks to help learn grips and I've been trying to focus on using my fingers and palms to grip down onto the mat during these positions, which has helped a bit to release pressure, but I still get pain. I also try and focus on working my arms to help keep me up to release pressure on my wrists/hands by targeting my biceps/triceps or bending the elbow slightly (i.e. trying to avoid leaning all my weight onto the bottom part of my palm).

Any advice on how to over come this? Appreciate it in advance!

    Questions Regarding Diet and Programs

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 10:17 AM PST

I'm not an expert practitioner of Yoga, however, I love the practice and want to implement it into a hybrid calisthenics program. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Also, I want to lose some weight and get toned up, any suggestions on good diets to complement yoga practice?

    Cheers!

[Beginner] Any tips for awful balance?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:09 PM PST

I just started a working on balance today and it's absolutely terrible, I feel really discouraged at the moment, Every one-legged pose I tried doing I felt myself sort've teetering on the foot.

I tried to focus on getting the weight in one place on my foot but it just kept going all around, I'd start falling off to the right side, then left, then forward; Basically I can't balance for the life of me! I really couldn't hold poses long without falling over but I'm still determined to try and get better.

Any help, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I've 20 minutes spare in the morning. What is the best way to use them for Yoga? All 8 Pranayama or only Kapal-Bhati?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 01:25 AM PST

I go to gym 6 six days a week in the evening. But in the morning I've 15-20 minutes in hand. I want to dedicate them to yoga. I've already started doing Kapal-Bhati for 10 minutes, Anuloma-Viloma for 5 minutes, and ending with Shirsasana and Sarvangasana by remaining 5 minutes. (I stay in Shirshasana for 30 seconds, the remaining time goes for the struggle to make that Asana. Haha!)

Am I doing okay or is there a better way to use the time? I may extend the time for half and hour in future. Thanks in advance.
