    Yoga and my dog

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST

Just a little story about how yoga benefited my dog...unexpectedly. He's always been very reserved, well behaved, a little jumpy at noise and doesn't really play. I worried about him not living his doggy life to the full and if he was depressed or something. Since I started yoga, he has decided to get involved and I swear that dog watches the clock and waits for me. I can see him getting restless if I am late to the mat! It's like his time to let loose, tongue in my ear, licking my toes, under legs and rolling around the mat. He loves to sit on my shoulder when in savasana. I really feel like we have bonded through yoga and he's there every night! This comes with its own problems as I don't want to hurt his feelings by pushing him away 🤦🏻‍♀️ But anyway, thought I would share this heartwarming story and the benefits of yoga can reach out further than we expect ☺️

Online Yoga Classes (Trauma Informed) Suggestions

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:38 AM PST

    Hello,

I am looking for online yoga classes that are either trauma informed or specifically designed for trauma healing, OR if you know of a yoga center that might have this approach/specialty in general (and then I can look at their classes).

    Thank you!

Why does Manduka recommend NOT using vinegar to clean the Pro mats?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:26 PM PST

Manduka only recommends plain water or their very expensive mat cleaner to clean the Pro mats. A customer service representative specifically stated they do not recommend vinegar. How could diluted vinegar hurt the mat?

I use a 50:50 vinegar/water solution to clean most things in my house. The smell doesn't bother me at all, and it leaves my mat feeling clean. Is there something about vinegar that will degrade PVC over time?

I have no interest in buying Manduka's cleaner because it's so overpriced and I don't like the idea of using something with essential oils on something that is already a little slippery. Plus it annoys me that they won't recommend any other cleaning options.

    Yoga Made It Click

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST

I am posting this because I am so excited and thankful for what finding yoga has done for me. I hope that my experience can motivate others to try yoga or continue their practice.

I sought out yoga after having an opportunity to try a stand up paddle board. I got up but it took me several tries and I never felt confident. I knew I had to improve my balance, coordination and strength. Even if I never got to try it again I wanted to improve these things. Off to Google... What can improve these? Yoga! Ok let's try it.

I practice yoga at home (currently daily) as well as once a week at a local studio. Through my practice the biggest changes I have noticed have been mental though yes, my balance, coordination and strength are surely improving! I am much calmer, able to handle anxiety, able to see things more maturely and have an overall better mental outlook. I used to sit down and have a beer every night.... Every. Night. I hardly have a drink anymore, not quite an aversion just feel like I don't want to. This has been a goal for some time but one day it just clicked. I also have been motivated to make better food choices and focus on doing what is best for my body. I am gaining confidence and am finally going to give myself a much needed wardrobe overhaul.

Thank you yoga. Thank you for making all the things I had wanted to accomplish click so easily and become achievable. Thank you for bringing such a positive outlook to my life even through all the chaos right now.

After more than 1 year, I did it. I finally did some yoga. I wrote yoga for beginners 10 minutes on youtube and I found Yoga with Kassandra. I know her, in the past I also looked at her. Her channel caught my attention because I have a colleague with this name, her name is Casandra

Only able to do yoga for half an hour

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:57 AM PST

    Hi :)

I've always had an on/off relationship with yoga, but during covid and winter I've come to do it everyday or 6 days a week. And I love it. I get to move my body a bit instead of sitting on the chair/sofa where I work, study and relax. But. I can't do it for more than 30 minutes at a time and it bothers me. I'm physically able I just find it tedious after half an hour? No matter if it's yin or a hard vinyasa, I just start to wonder when it's over around the 30 min mark. But I want to do it longer, an hour would be really great. Have anyone experienced the same? And how did you "work your way up" to an hour?

Livestreaming classes with a company like Session?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:31 PM PST

    Hi,

Posting for my wife as she's not a reddit user. She asked me yesterday if I could ask you fine folks about livestreaming classes and what the best options are. She first thought of the idea after coming across this Zoom blog post where [Session](www.viasession.com) was mentioned. From the sounds of it, they allow instructors to livestream their classes, both free and paid, to attendees through zoom. Just wondering if this is a solid platform to work with or if there's something better?

Low back pain moving from uttanasana back to mountain

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST

I get lower back pain during the transition movement going from standing forward fold back up to standing in mountain. The pain is only during the transition movement, not while in forward fold.

I assume this is due to weak core muscles because...well, isn't it almost always? lol. Or do I also need to focus on activating a different muscle to power the movement - - for example, should my hamstrings and glutes actually be doing the work there?

    Thanks

    Panic Attacks during Pigeon Pose?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:48 AM PST

Hi Yogies! I've been doing yoga for about 12 or 13 years. I have a loose relationship with it, probably practice 3-9 times a month. I'm not naturally flexible but it helps keep me more flexible and energetic than I would be otherwise and helps with my chronic back pain. I have a lot of physical and mental trauma. Any way this year I have noticed a strange trend, which is that I get panic attacks during pigeon pose and have to stop the practice abruptly. Get up and drink some water and it calms down. Any one else experience this or have insights? Am I doing something wrong?

What’s the name of this sitting posture?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:32 PM PST

Hi, could someone give me the name of this sitting posture please. It's almost identical to vajrasana but the legs are wider apart so that you sit on the floor instead of your heels. So you're butt is on the floor in between your heels.

    Thank you.

Yoga when I can’t put weight on my left foot.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:01 AM PST

    Hey there!

Recovering from a foot injury which prevents me from running. Can go for some light bike rides or swim as it doesn't stress my foot as much. Unfortunately the gyms and pools are all closed and the weather is way too snowy and icy to go biking.

I'm considering doing some yoga as I honestly feel terrible these days when I can't run or go for any longer walk than to the store. Lack of motivation, sleep worse, more agitated et cetera.

Unfortunately yoga classes are also out of the question, pandemic and all.

I know that there are different yoga types and was wondering if any type was more appropriate when recovering from a foot injury where I won't be putting a lot of weight on my foot. I don't mind paying for courses, but if it's available for free for starters it would be swell so I can test the waters. A bonus would be if it's physically demanding for the upper body or legs (excluding the foot), I really miss the feeling of a good and hard workout. Provided so much mental clarity.

    Thanks for your help!

Do you warm up before your sessions?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:37 PM PST

I have a lot of trouble with any sort of back bending. Forward folds, cobra, cat/cow. Only twisting comes naturally where I don't have to squeeze my abs to protect my lower back. I got thinking on the mat today that warming up with some star jumps might do me well. I wondered if anyone else warms up slightly before a session? I was taught at college that stretching cold muscles is a big no no. But no one talks about it in yoga....? Thoughts?

    [Help] Khechari tongue mudra stretching

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

I am pulling my tongue forward with a towel for 30sec then switch to pushing my tongue backward for 30sec then switch again, and so on, for 5min 3 time a day.

How long per day can I do that without hurting my tongue?

How fast does a tongue lengthen with push and pulls?

If you happen to practice khechari then how long does the tongue need to be to obtain the desired effect?

    Not having much time left.

    Beginner/Middle Aged/Help

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:16 PM PST

Thank you to every person who will assist me, I am very grateful. I am a 40yo male, I have zero flexibility. If I say zero, Sheldon Cooper from Bing Bang Theory touching his toes, is me. My upper body strength is not great. I am out of shape.

Where I am in my life, whether I want to take up jogging, some body weight training etc, due to my very poor flexibility and lack of core strength etc, I find that I cannot hold form, which results in unnecessary injuries.

My wife recommended yoga. I started with some online content. where I am at, beginner content is too advanced for me. I wrapped up a 20min session this morning and my wife asked me how it went. My reply "terrible! I shake all over while I am busy, I cannot bend, I cannot keep the poses correctly." This is a all very frustrating.

So is there a place I should rather start? Or should I just keep at it? Should I do 3 days a week, 5 days a week or daily yoga? Will I get stronger? Will I become more flexible? I am not wanting to be a muscle build, I want to be slimmed down, toned - just look a little healthier. I am not overweight, I am out of shape.

Should I supplement my current yoga with maybe something else after work in the afternoons?

Thank you for taking the time reading this far

    Beginner Wide legged forward fold

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:15 AM PST

So I'm 30 days into yoga and def considered a beginner. I'm doing the 30 days with adrienne. When I'm doing a wide legged forward fold, I can get my finger tips to touch the floor but looking in the mirror I noticed my back is rounded during this. Is this normal and will my back eventually get to the neutral position or whatever is ideal? I'm so confused in yoga what's the ideal back position. Neutral spine or curved? I know rounded isn't good lol

    13 benefits of yoga

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:35 PM PST

I just found interesting article. Derived from the Sanskrit word "yuji," meaning yoke or union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body (1Trusted Source).

It incorporates breathing exercises, meditation and poses designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress.

Practicing yoga is said to come with many benefits for both mental and physical health, though not all of these benefits have been backed by science.

This article takes a look at 13 evidence-based benefits of yoga. Read full: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/13-benefits-of-yoga
