| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:27 AM PST In today's episode of YWA, Adriene says to us, "don't be afraid". I thought to myself, I am afraid but I will do this anyway. I did. Last year I quit right after the 6th day, somewhat inadvertently. Day 6 is usually "abs day". I always WANT to do core conditioning but I used to feel so so uncomfortable doing core exercises. I think I felt defeated. Today, I felt strong as hell! I did almost the entire video without a break. And the breaks I did take, I went back right after. I SO appreciate when she says "if you took a break, that's great, come back and do the last set". I did. 6 days in and it's already been the most incredible journey. Loved today's kapalbhati, I've been wanting to integrate it into my mornings and this is a great way to start. Anyone else doing YWA Breath? ❤ [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST I've been dabbling in yoga for... Damn... Almost 22 years now. In recent years, I've succumbed to injuries sustained in a series of car accidents - whiplash & concussions - the last of which scrambled my eggs pretty badly. Then 2020 happened. On one hand, 2020 was the year of healing for me - physically and cognitively. On the other hand... Well, I'm pretty sure you already know that story... For me, the year quickly escalated into stress and anxiety and ended with a slide into depression... Luckily, my husband and I recognized the depression pretty quickly. My doctor increased my medication and suggested light therapy. Both started the week after Christmas. That same week, I returned to my yoga mat with the intention to DO better... Taking better care of myself. 2020 got me FEELING better physically and cognitively, so I decided 2021 would be my time to DO better. Since the week of Christmas, I've walked more throughout the day (thanks to my hacked together treadmill desk), and I've only missed one day on the mat (thanks to a migraine), and I have to say I've never been happier and more content... Even given recent events here in the U.S. Tonight it hit me that yoga has always been my homebase... Yoga is the answer (for me)... Regardless of the question. But I've failed to see it until now!! Thanks for listening 🙂 [link] [comments] |
| Wife, long time yoga lover, wants to become instructor for seniors(already a physical therapist). Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:03 PM PST Wife is a great physical therapist and loves working with seniors. Also has been practicing yoga for 20+ years. Wants to meld the two and become a yoga instructor for seniors. Trying to support and kinda push this forward. Looking online, I see certification courses. Are these useful? If so, which ones are respected. Any existing programs that fit her interest? Grateful for any suggestions and thanks in advance. | Fellow yogis of Reddit, why do you do yoga? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:10 AM PST I first started practicing yoga when I was struggling with severe anxiety and depression. My anxiety was making my day to day functions more of a struggle and I was unable to focus, create, hold space for others. Working under a high stress job as a manager of a small business and dealing with other stressors I knew that I needed to try to and find something to help ease all the mental health issues that were coming up. I know why I started yoga, but why did you? I would love to hear your story [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:26 AM PST By reconnecting to my body, yoga helps me to be more in line with who I am, and to accept my body for what it is. By listening to it, I become more friendly with it and I can finally get to reconcile my body and mind, slowly. Have any other trans/non-binary person here found that yoga helped them during their transition? Do you have poses or routines that were particularly helpful? :) [link] [comments] |
| I cried today after a long time. Yoga is the best thing that I have every discovered Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:59 PM PST If you look at my username, I recently made this account solely to quit porn, to post things on reddit that I usually don't share from my main account, and I also picked up yoga about 10 days earlier. Today I finished the 8th day of yoga with adriene, and as I was laying there in savasana I bawled my eyes out like a baby. I couldn't really figure out why I was crying, and I tried to find the reason but I couldn't. But I felt so relieved after it though, it's undescribable. I have been loving my yoga practise so much, and I think it's the only thing that's keeping me away from porn. I used to rely on porn to cope with stress, and I had been trying to quit it since the last 5 years. My fetishes had degraded so much, but I still would fail often, and I'm so glad that I found yoga, it has been the best anti-stress thing I have ever found. I also have ADHD so even meditation wouldn't work right for me because I really like to move my body. But yoga feels like a perfect thing for someone hyperactive like me. I love to move my body, I still don't understand though why yoga poses feels specifically so good tho. But yeah, I sometimes feel why didn't I discover this earlier. Maybe it's cuz of the modern day porn-ification of yoga on social media/adult websites. I always kinda looked at it from a very skewed perspective. But it's nothing like that, I wish more people get to discover this beautiful thing. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:39 PM PST I developed an annoying pain in my right lower back/hip area after being pretty sedentary for two weeks while I had covid. Doing stretches throughout the day helps me deal with the pain while I'm walking, sitting, working, etc. My question for you beautiful people on this board is why does the pain hurt the worst when I lay down for savansna (not sure how to spell it I know you know what I mean)? I remember my back always being uncomfortable during savasna before I developed this pain but now it's way worse. I'm also more comfortable laying down on flat, hard surfaces when my lower back isn't really touching the ground with my upper back and buttocks supporting it. Is this something that I can fix through exercise and stretching or did I mess up my back forever? Any advice at all is welcomed and appreciated. Love you all 💞 [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:30 PM PST Hi. First time posting but have been a bit of a lurker. I'm after recommendations for either books/videos for pregnancy yoga. I'm currently 15 weeks and discovering my energy levels are the lowest they have ever been. I used to do yoga a few years ago but life and unfortunately work got in the way. Now with the UK being in another lockdown and with being pregnant I want to try and get back into it, so as to rebuild my fitness and re energise myself. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:07 PM PST I'm new to yoga, I started about 4 months ago.. i really love it but I'm a 6'3 female (retired volleyball player) and my hamstrings are so tight I can't even do downward facing dog correctly. It feels silly not being able to do the most basic pose. What's the best way to modify it to work towards doing it correctly? Usually I just shift my feet back until my heels can flatten but that makes it hard to transition between poses smoothly. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST I suffer from fibromyalgia and my doctor recommended me to make yoga. What can I start with? He says it is a kind of therapy cause my muscles need to relax. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:54 PM PST I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 2 years and with the pandemic closing studios I've been looking for classes through YouTube (my favorite Chanel so far as been Yoga with Tim). I enjoy vinyasa yoga but am also looking to increase flexibility. Does anyone have suggestions for YouTube yoga instructors? Also do you guys add any other forms of exercises in your week? | Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:28 PM PST Its so easy for women to find good yoga clothing. I am currently using a pair of cheap gym shorts. They restrict movement, I have to constantly adjust my shorts for my practice. What do you wear for your practice? [link] [comments] |
| Ashtanga Primary Series - it's feasible for Hatha practitioner / not expert yogi? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:55 PM PST I signed up for an ashtanga workshop where the primary series will be taught and then there will be a conference. I have always been intrigued by Ashtanga and I am interested in the lecture that will be after the asana practice, but the workshop will be the day after tomorrow and I've never taken a live ashtanga class or even done the entire first series, I've only tried to follow a few segments online. Do you have any advice on how to approach an ashtanga class for someone who is new to it? I'm afraid I'll have a hard time following the whole series because it's a different practice than I'm used to, plus I don't want to overdo it and risk injury.... To give you some context, I've been practicing yoga for a little over two years, I started with vinyasa but then focused on Hatha. I'm pretty flexible but lack arm strength (I can only hold the crow for 1 second before collapsing). Thanks for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:57 AM PST I have no known physical disability. I think I'm just very less flexible due to the lifestyle I have had. Any help would be hugely appreciated... [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:34 AM PST I usually do it to try and open my hips, it feels normal when the left leg is on top but when the right one is on top I get some pain in my right hip. I'm young and perfectly healthy tho I've practised martial arts for quite a long time and my teacher told me a lot of times that the hip is easily stressed when practising martial arts and that might be a reason for the pain. It's not really a sharp pain or anything, I can practise for a long time and it doesn't really affect me, I can even bend over in Fire Log Pose and stretch my arms out with the forehead touching the floor with no problems, the sensation just kinda sits there and I can't tell if it is my hip opening or a warning for injuries. | Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:47 AM PST in the name of building community in these challenging times, I've set up a discord for those who want to connect further and share their journey - it's so important to keep that feeling of community going when we're so isolated in lockdown and quarantine Peace and love x [link] [comments] |
