    Stay disciplined

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 06:51 PM PST

I let laziness get the better of me from time to time. I've been working from home since the pandemic, and if it wasn't for online/on-demand yoga, I wouldn't get much exercise, especially during the winter. I put off yoga for almost 2 weeks and my mental state started to deteriorate. Tonight, I returned to my practice and I feel better mentally and physically than I have in 2 weeks. Just a reminder to whoever needs to hear it, who might have been like me, keep at it, keep your spirit up.

I have heard good things and it also offers additional workout options with a subscription to the app. Any feedback?

Started a daily routine again after a long time and my lungs feel funny

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 01:22 PM PST

Just doing it for a second week straight and now I feel every breath filling my lungs even when idle. Wrists getting stronger too, that's very welcome! It's like the body remembers I used to do this and catches up surprisingly quickly.

I really need to keep it up past the 30 days this time!

Pain in right shoulder after vinyasa

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 07:26 PM PST

Hello! I'm wondering if I can have some advice from fellow yogis. I am 37 years old, and I've been practicing vinyasa for 12 years now (3-5x/week). Although it's helped keep me strong and grounded, I've been noticing increasing pain in my right shoulder directly underneath the bottom of my shoulder blade. I also have a crunching sound in both my shoulders when I roll them accompanied by a little pain (this has been occurring for a few years). It feels like the joint isn't lubricated and almost like bone on bone is rubbing. I also sometimes get a shooting pain down my right arm.

I asked a longterm yoga teacher/decades-long dance teacher about this and she told me that my shoulders sound like every dancer she's ever known. I'm not sure what that means and doubt it's a positive.

I recently realized that I previously had a tendency to hike my butt up when in plank so I've been ensuring to keep a true plank position since. Since I have been, I've noticed the pain in my right shoulder has become less diffuse and more localized, and occurs now right after my practice.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Does anyone have any insights? Thank you! 🙏

    Suga Mat Review

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 07:12 PM PST

I'm surprised the Suga mat doesn't get more love around here, so I thought I would drop a quick review! I was recently in the market for a new mat as my Jade travel mat is a bit TOO sticky & my old Target brand one didn't feel solid enough. I started by looking through this subreddit & saw lots of comments about how unsustainable certain types of mats were. While the rubber ones are perhaps better than plastic, I was leery of reviews of the Jade mats that they only held up a year or two, as I can see some wear in my travel mat after that time too.

So, I went down an Internet rabbit hole of yoga mats and reviews & found the Suga. It's made of upcycled wetsuits and retails for $79. For an extra $20, you can pay for the "cradle to grave" option, which gives you life time replacements with the old mat being broken down & reused again. Sustainability wise, a wet dream, and not a bad price if I truly never have to buy another mat.

The Wirecutter review nearly put me off, with them calling it overly abrasive and rough on the skin. I reconsidered after reading the Amazon reviews & being blown away by the amount of positive feedback. I decided to take the plunge.

My mat came today & my first impression is overwhelmingly positive. I love how solid it feels-more like a gym mat than a yoga mat under foot, but striking a good balance of gripiness and give. For example, in my down dog on my cheap mat, I always slide a little. On the Jade, I can plop my hands anywhere and be rock solid. On the Suga, I found myself having to be more mindful of my hand placement but quickly found a solid spot. On the other hand, full wheel on the Jade feels like it rips my hair out because it's so grippy. I found the Suga more comfortable by far.

I'm recovering from a broken knee last spring & occasionally still feel some pain in tabletop or other knee weight bearing poses (not surprising since the Jade travel has nearly no support). The Target mat tends to squish out under my joints and doesn't really help a ton either. I've taken to practicing with a tea towel at hand for when things get uncomfortable, but the Suga's more solid texture seemed to get my knee thru practice without many complaints today!

I really look forward to someday going to a hot yoga class & really putting it thru the paces—then bringing it home & throwing it in the shower to clean up as is recommended. Overall, I'm stoked about the purchase & hope others find this helpful in the future!

    First yoga practice

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 06:27 AM PST

    Namaste community.
Today after a long time looking, informing and preparing I have started doing yoga and the sensations have been fantastic and frustrating in equal measure.
Fantastic because it felt like my body and my muscles worked and exercised and frustrating because I have felt how very out of shape I am and all the way and work that lies ahead.
But thanks to this community, I definitely launched after years of hesitating to start practicing yoga.
So from that part thank you all.

Yogis with a swayback that achieved headstand, how did you do it?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 04:57 PM PST

I have a horrific swayback. I've decided to start working on my headstand more seriously, and while I have the strength to keep the pressure off of my head, I will start to tilt almost right after my feet come off of the ground. Right now my goal is to just hold a headstand with my feet tucked in. I don't feel like I'm doing anything beneficial when I lean against a wall.

    What did you do?

    Side crow...any advice?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 03:58 PM PST

I've practiced yoga semi-regularly on and off for many years. I've always just done the basics, but am starting to want to try and master some more advanced poses. Today I was working on side crow and just cannot manage to make it happen and I'm not sure if it's just not possible for my body?

I can't seem to be able to get my thigh high enough to get onto my elbows. I tried starting from squatting on a block, but in that position I can't get my front hand to rest flat on the ground from that high. Any advice about why this would be the case is welcome! I was wondering if it's my body type...I am short (5'2) and have a very short torso for my size, wondering if that has something to do with it. Another thing, if this makes sense, is that in a runner's lunge I am also not able to place my hands flat on the ground, not sure why.

    Cardio and Yoga?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 01:13 PM PST

So I've been practicing Yoga for a while now, but have noticed that my cardio isnt very good.

Has anyone here combined their yoga practice with something like running, biking, or swimming? Was there a notable difference after adding more cardio to your routine?

Are there any good yoga routines you like to do in order to improve your cardio?

I do yoga because I like it. But how beneficial is it for me?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 06:18 AM PST

I just like it so I don't need it to be beneficial. But I'd like to finally get in shape (skinny guy) and I'd like to get back to playing basketball so I'd like more explosiveness and core strength. I'm not going to only do yoga but I plan to make it part of my routine.

My question is, does yoga help with everything? Can it compliment any fitness goal? Or would I be hurting my goal by doing yoga. Know what I mean?
