    1st Time / Yoga / Male (44)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST

So forgive me - I've always been hesitant and somewhat of a yoga skeptic; but today I just finished my 1st yoga stretches and class via YouTube.

Personally I'm blown away of how good my mind, body, and spirit feels already! I'm 6'-3" / 180 lbs w/ a bad back and neck along w/ aches and pains.

I'm not ashamed to say it but I also struggle w/ depression & anxiety as well and during and after my yoga there was a huge sense of a TOTAL RELEASE that is difficult to explain.

All I know is that I will continue yoga from here on out. My next step is to order a yoga mat on Amazon today.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 'NEWBIE' like myself heading into the yoga scene? Thanks in advance!

Intermediate versions of YWA but still with her warmth?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:48 PM PST

I know there has been a lot of talk previously about the next step up after YWA... I have tried other practices and none of them compare to the way Adrienne speaks. I love her calm, gentle approach, I like her way of taking and making you feel better with the rambling. Does anyone know of some more challenging practices but still with the 'therapy' talk? tyi

Can anyone help me train more for this position? I'm having a lot of trouble. There's nothing I can pull on to help me get here except my legs. Any assistance would be awesome. Thanks !

    Struggles with downward dog

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:18 AM PST

I have been practicing yoga for several years and have always found downward dog to be extremely difficult. I have had my alignment checked by a qualified teacher many times over the years and believe that I am doing it correctly (fingers spread, inner elbows forward etc)

However the moment I come into the pose I struggle to maintain it. My arms shake and ache like crazy. I feel like my body weighs a ton and I can barely keep myself up. I try sending my weight back into my hips and legs but find it really difficult. I am not a particularly heavy person so it's not like I have a lot of weight to hold up. I don't know if the issue may be with my shoulders as I am fairly flexible everywhere else.

Are there any specific poses I can work on to help with this? I find it very disruptive to my practice having to come out of the pose constantly and then trying to continue the flow (during a sun salutation for example).

Working toward a full forward fold.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:56 PM PST

I'm a beginner (a beginner as in I've been doing yoga for about two weeks) and have had trouble progressing in my forward fold.

I've noticed significant flexibility gains in some poses, but my hamstrings seem to be as tight as ever despite my stretching.

I've been practicing almost daily and incorporate a lot of hamstring stretches into my practice. It might be important to know that before starting yoga I was almost completely sedentary.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me or if someone knows how long it takes to see results in these things?

    Thanks in advance. 😊

    Thoughts on foam rolling?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:08 AM PST

I have a lot of tightness in my quads and IT bands and I keep receiving recommendations to use a foam roller. Using a foam roller is very painful for me and it seems counter to the love I try to show my body through yoga... What do you think fellow yogis? Do you use a foam roller? Why or why not?

    Best yoga for me ?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:04 PM PST

So two months ago I started doing yoga. I don't know much , but it's making my body feel great and my mind.

The one issue is that I joined a " power yoga " place. I really do like it , but I'm 25 years old and been a athlete my whole life. And this place only really holds poses for about 4-6 seconds, and they mix some cardio work in there.

What do you think is the best type of yoga for a very tight athlete to get into? Sometimes at home I love just playing relaxing music and holding the stretches for a long time and just focusing on my breath , rather than feeling rushed.

How to learn the correct form of a yoga posture?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:54 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am doing yoga for 36 days now and I am planning to do 365 days of yoga.

I am watching "Yoga With Adriene" and I am planning to do the whole year with her videos, she is amazing and I am so grateful that I have access to her videos and that I found her.

The first 30 days my goal was to do yoga, the second 30 days which I am doing right now the goal is to have better postures.

I discovered recently that I was doing some postures wrong (such as a downward-facing dog) and I modified all of them.

My question is, do you have any advice on how can I learn the correct postures? I want to know if I am doing every posture right, which can be hard since I can't see my body.

Can you recommend a course, or videos, or playlists, or good books that helped you?

I am planning to have an instructor but maybe I will be able to have one after 6 month maybe more, currently is impossible due to my busy schedule, and I know that I will not stick to yoga if I have a fixed time and date. It is not comfortable for me. I like to do yoga in my home currently and on my PJ lol. So no instructor for now or anytime later.

So till I have an instructor, is there any self-taught here who can give me a piece of advice on how they become better at yoga by themself?

The first 30 days I loved yoga and I was excited every day, but now, all I think of when I am doing it if I am doing it right, which causes me a lot of stress and I forget the whole point of yoga.

Any piece of advice would help. And if you are self-taught I will be happy to know your experiences.

    Thank you for reading.

Do you consider 54 or 108 rounds to be 108 sun salutations? Would you say this version is the “universal” form? (Know there are many different variations! )

Can you simultaneously do Heart Bench and Legs Up the Wall? Should you?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:08 PM PST

Heart Bench and Legs Up the Wall are two of my favorite restorative postures to do at the end of class when my teacher gives us a few minutes to play. I tried it out today and it worked, albeit it was a bit uncomfortable because it took a bit of adjusting the block between my shoulders with not much room to move because my legs were up the wall. I'm sure if practiced a few more times I could get it to work more easily. Anyone else try this out before? Is there any reason one might injure themself attempting this?

    Suggestions to ease wrist pain?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:24 AM PST

I love yoga, but I struggle with putting weight on my right wrist. I buckled the bone as a kid and ever since then, weight irritates it. I can handle it for a few poses but then the pain really kicks in.

Would a wrist brace help or just get in the way?

    Quantitative measurements in Yoga

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 01:51 PM PST

Hi all, hope you're doing well! I'm a CS student currently developing an app for exercises and yoga that uses a fair bit of AI. While I regularly visit the gym and know a fair amount of what to look for in an exercise, I don't know anything about yoga. As an example, I'll perform 5 sets, 15 reps of pushups with 60 seconds resting time, what should I look for in yoga poses? Should I do the same thing as I did for the above example? If not, what should I look for in yoga poses?

    Your help is appreciated!

Gentle tears, gentle reminder, thank you universe

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:21 PM PST

I practise yoga regularly. It connects me back to my spirit, mind, and body. I feel completely alive when I'm in practice, it's as if I enter another dimension of the universe. Yoga has enabled my healing journey, taught me unexplainable knowledge, and guided me on my life path.

Yesterday during my practice, I was in my resting pose, fish pose, where my chest was elevated and my instructor guided us to feel our heart chakra open and feel its energy.

A overwhelming sense of gratitude, love, and peace was felt in my being. It brought me to tears.. Tears of joy, wonder and admiration for the universe. Gentle tears, just rolling slowly down my cheek as I smile back at the universe.

I had never been so at peace in my life. I recall all the "heartbreaks" I had previously, and can only look at those memories with love and gratefulness. I thank the universe so much for teaching me it's deep knowledge. I thank the universe for showing me it's mysterious works in my life.

Thoughts on switching to ashtanga yoga from calisthenics

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 04:43 AM PST

So my current workout routine leaves me feeling very tired and takes a lot of time to workout my upper body(calisthenics) and lower(running). I'm thinking of just doing ashtanga yoga everyday as an option since I always feel light and rejuvenated after but still feel like I got in a good workout. I'm already a lean built person, will doing only ashtanga make me even thinner? Should I at least throw in some pull-ups here and there?
