[COMP] Controversial to some. Do you need to only use traditional asana, to be practicing yoga? IMO no.

Palms don't reach floor when framing foot in lunge?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 06:03 PM PST

Whenever I do a lunge and have to frame my front foot with my hands, my fingers barely touch the ground which makes it difficult to transition into a plank pose(or downward dog).

Is there a proper technique to get my palms on the floor in this position? Or do some people struggle with certain poses due to their body proportions (arm/leg lengths)?

If my short arms are the reason why I can't do this, can any provide me with some guidance on how to transition from this pose to plank pose? Do I just have to shift my knee to the side under my armpit so that it's no longer framing my foot and go into plank pose from there?

    A scary question

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 03:50 PM PST

So I have a question and I swear I am not trolling. I was on YouTube because I am interested in Yoga and trying to get into it because my body is wrecked from the military. I saw a video that somewhat described a feeling of fear that I had when meditating at 9 but did not completely answer it. (Actual question follows)

When I was 9 I would try to meditate because my older cousin did it, and she was always happy. I am 26 now. I have ADHD and it makes it really hard to try and focus without my mind wondering. One day I was able to concentrate, but it was on nothing. Like nothing. It was just this kind of blank sheet of paper in my mind. I then begin to start seeing what seemed to be strange color balls glowing, and I felt an intense sensation that I can't really describe in my chest and stomach. At the same time I felt something sinister. Like a being hovering behind me and over my head. It was like it was trying to stop me from what I was doing. It scared the crap out of me and I'm scared to get back into meditating. Has anyone experienced this before with yoga? Why did this happen? I'm just trying to find some sort of answer so I don't have to be scared of Yoga.

Achilles Tendon / Plantar Fasciitis & Balancing Asana

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 12:28 PM PST

Male yogi here practicing for a year and a half. I always have a stiff or achy tendon after work some days. Yoga and lots of down dog have helped alleviate this quite a bit.

However, I have issues balancing on one leg in this particular side. Tree, Dancer, One Leg Mountain, etc all are very difficult to hold, my foot feels like it loves to just give up and "roll" me out of balance.

This can even happen in crescent lunge if this is my lead foot. It sometimes doesn't feel like it wants to fully grip the mat from heel to toe.

Any advice on how to strengthen this more other than daily practice. I find myself avoiding balancing postures.

Feeling tired in parts of the body - trauma/stress build up?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 02:14 PM PST

I'm fairly desperate here with my energy levels. I have the desire to get fit but not the motivation. This might be off topic but I really want guidance and I've heard people mention trauma/stress building in the body being released by yoga.

I have been having a problem with fatigue for a while now. I have been on a health journey for a few years now and got the diet part down but can never keep up with any workout related goals. I am in the position of being a family caretaker right now which makes me totally mentally exhausted. I am tired from right when I wake up to when I go to sleep. I take iron, magnesium, vitamin d supplements etc and also eat really well so I don't think it's a deficiency.

So I tried to think about beyond being fatigued what in my body feels tired. My jaw/neck/shoulders feel tired - I do have TMJ and clench my teeth often. Usually this sensation overshadows any other body sensation I have completely. However, I also realized my hips -feel- tired too. They have minor aches and don't feel like they are able to hit peak movement. Like the range of motion is limited to where it could be. I do sit Indian style for hours a day (pretty much anytime I sit I sit Indian style and have my entire life).

Is this stress/tension/trauma built up in these areas ? Is it simply sitting Indian style has become bad for me after three decades? Am I just on the verge of becoming an empty shell? I have a history of horrible childhood trauma as well and I can't help but view my body as a nuisance to ignore so I've probably been ignoring things my whole life and maybe it's just cumulated into this?

    Yoga poses for strength

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 04:41 PM PST

I recently started doing yoga after some health complications. I'm trying to progressively get back into shape and gain muscle at the same time. I was hoping to find some routines specifically for upper body, lower body, or specific muscle groups.

Also- any good apps or places that you can create your own workouts?

Any recommendations for workouts that would compliment my yoga practice?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 03:26 PM PST

I am nearing 2 months of daily practice and I was thinking of picking up another work out e.g running. But in Om magazine is says running can decrease flexibility... This got me thinking if there were any workouts that would compliment my yoga practice? Maybe dance/zumba?

I've considered doing some "cardio yoga" videos too, I guess I could go all in on yoga.

Can I properly do yoga with knee hyperextension?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 03:00 PM PST

I started doing some yoga and stretching for the past couple weeks and I really enjoy it.

My knees hyperextend naturally so I didn't get it from an injury like I've searched on the net.

Okay my question is, when doing yoga am I supposed to have my leg how it feels naturally to me (in this case hyperextend essentially feels like making my leg straight)

    OR

am I supposed to correct my legs to actually be straight ie just bringing my knee forward to make it look straight?

Maybe I should know this and maybe if I had done sports a coach would have told me. It just came into my mind that I might be doing this yoga wrong since I'm hyperextending the knees.

I noticed one exercise say you should feel this in the calf and I felt my calf and there was no tension there but when I tried to bring forward my leg to make it straight I felt the tension.

Anyway, I want to keep up this yoga because I'm enjoying it but want to make sure I'm doing it correctly.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Doing yoga after an elbow injury?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:06 AM PST

To preface Im a beginner. I broke my elbow in a car accident last april, and I still cant straighten it all the way and will likely never be able to. Ive gained some strength back, but practicing has become a lot harder because of this. Even a down dog is more difficult as my body is a little lopsided because of my crooked elbow.

Does anyone have any advice for how I can continue my practice? Do you think yoga could help me straighten my arm back out over time?

I’ve been getting a lot of targeted ads for paid flexibility programs that have tons of good reviews. Are these programs worth it or can I find basically the same thing for free online somewhere?

    Seeking advice & possibly support

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 08:49 AM PST

Hello all. I just had a couple questions... Well, I did read the FAQ & the sticky post for those new to yoga, but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.

First, & this is the hardest for me to admit, I was just hoping to get some encouragement, in a sense. I have a spouse who supports me getting back into yoga, but I still haven't followed through with it. Even though she says "go for it!" I keep ending up in my same routine of doing nothing. I just feel like such an impostor anymore. I had to pretend to be someone I wasn't for so long that I keep falling back into being like that. The truth is though, I love yoga & mindfulness & meditation- I need it. I've been a wreck especially with COVID & some huge life changes. Anyway, I don't want to ask it, but maybe I just need to do it anyway... I would greatly appreciate any support or tips, if you've got them for a beginner like me. If anyone else struggles with impostor syndrome & could shed some light on that, I'd be forever grateful.

My second request is possibly going to push some buttons, but I swear that's not my intent. See, I live in a super small town that doesn't really get along with "people like me" so to speak. There's not really options for me to get out & take a class unless I want to travel an hour both ways & head into a city with a terrible crime rate. Our family also can't afford to pay for a professional class at this time, thanks to having to take a pay cut (after job loss) during COVID. From reading the FAQ I understand that a lot of the 'learn at home' style of yoga is frowned upon. However, circumstances really can make it nearly impossible for someone to learn in a class setting. I understand there are millions of Youtube videos & apps, but I don't have a data plan to take advantage of those. (I feel like a barbarian.) My basic question is simply if anyone has suggestions for a blog I can peruse (while at lunch at work, again due to no data) so I can deepen my knowledge? Also, any reference for poses that I can print would be a huge help as well (as long as it's not Pinterest- which is blocked at work). If there's even a simple book that's not expensive, or has a digital option, I'd gladly check it out.

I really do hope to find some help & keep trying to improve myself in body & mind. I appreciate any help.

Had online lecture, can't really understand the literally first breathing exercise I'm supposed to do

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:57 AM PST

So I have this video lecture. Literally first thing is really confusing to me. Also, I'll be using bad terminology, I'm not even native English speaker. Paraphrasing the video + lecture:

Sit on a yoga block, in Sukhasana (googled the name); or a position [I don't know a name of, similar to the first one but the legs don't cross and heels are pointing towards groin]. The latter preferably, but either one's okay. You should feel your sit bones if you're sitting properly.

Place palms on thighs, when breathing out push them. Adding another movement, when breathing out, as if you were attempting to move the sit bones closer towards (them-/your-)self [not sure which she meant]. And now also pull them up [when breathing out].

Well be also working with imagination - when breathing in, imagine as if the sit bones are doors of elevator, the elevator is closing, and goes upwards. So we're pulling the whole area between sitting bones upwards towards chests, and with inhalation, we relax.

[afterwards] Certainly, you've felt something happening in your hypogastrium [the local word doesn't sound so technical], that's good, that's the activation of pelvic floor [...]

    ???

How am I supposed to move my (sit) bones? I can't even "pretend" move them. I have no idea what the parts about moving them and the area between them are supposed to mean? Like, clench my butt or what? I can't even google it because I have no idea what this breathing exercise is called.

    Yoga & Mitral valve prolapse

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 02:16 AM PST

Hello Guys. My age is 24 and I have a minor heart condition called mitral valve prolapse so I am unable to do any heavy exercise or even run because if I do that, I start having palpitations & chest becomes bit heavy. It triggers even if I do normal yoga poses. So can anybody please tell me what yoga poses to do & to avoid for this kind of problem? Thanks

    Stretching

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:36 AM PST

So I noticed a few months back that I couldnt kneel and sit on my heels, so for the past few months ive been stretching for 20-30 mins every single day. Over this time i've become more flexible everywhere except my knees, I still cant sit on my heels until the end of the 30 mins stretching everyday, why no improvement? The pain when I sit on my heels is at the top of my shins and in my knees, any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Remedies for noise while doing yoga in a dorm?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 09:20 PM PST

Hi everyone! I have just moved back into my dorm and I'm having issues keeping noise to a minimum while I practice yoga. Particularly, the issue is with my mat. My room has hardwood floors and my mat makes a ton of squeaking noises as it rubs against the floor. I don't doubt that others can hear this, so I'm wondering if any of you have experienced a similar issue and found a remedy for these rubbing noises? As a college student, I don't want to think the issue is that I need to buy a different mat, but if that's the case here....please let me know lol! Thank you!
