    bad yoga professor

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:46 AM PST

so i have been practicing yoga for a couple years on my own, using various yoga apps and youtube videos to guide my flow. this year i found that my university actually offers yoga classes for credit so i decided to take one. its at 7:45 am and i was really excited to start my day w some good yoga. i have come to find out that my yoga professor is kind of an ass. she does not allow modifications for poses (keeping in mind that this is a level 1 beginning class) she makes us go around the zoom call and demonstrate yoga poses even if we are uncomfortable doing so, she talks down to students and passive aggressively calls students out by their weight (example: "now some of the heavy students in this class will not be able to do this pose"). the instance that set me off happened recently when we were trying crow pose (back story: i had double shoulder surgery a couple years back so i cannot support myself like that) i was inevitably called out for not doing the pose even though i knew i could not do it. she asked me to show the class and "at least try" to which i responded w "i cannot support myself like that" and to which she said "why? you are relatively small and arent even trying" i wanted to make her feel bad for saying this because although im comfortable sharing my health status, others are not and should not have to in front of class. so i responded saying "yeah i had double shoulder surgery and literally cannot do this pose. i have tried, but i will hurt myself" sorry this is lengthy, i just wanted to get this off my chest and see if anyone has had a similar experience and maybe has any way to go about this situation? i dont want her to turn others away from practicing yoga and become discouraged.

Frustrated with low back pain, some yoga poses worse or better depending on the day. Tips for not overextending myself in class? Anything I should specifically avoid?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:21 PM PST

Title says it all, but it seems like depending on the day or the Pose, I'll have different results and feelings in my low back area. I tend to baby it already but I notice I specifically have issues trying to do up dog and chatarungas.

I know I need to work on core strength, that's definitely something I'm doing already. But it doesn't yet feel like enough and because I've dealt with this pain for almost 10 years I just don't think it's going to magically go away even for yoga. Anything I should do differently? Poses to avoid? How do I do these basic sequences without pain?

    Pigeon Pose

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:16 PM PST

I've seen various instructions on pigeon and was wondering what you all thought..

Where should you be putting your weight? I've been trying to keep weight distribution even (between the "in" leg and the "out" leg) and not lean into one particular side. This gives a deeper stretch in the inner thigh of the "out" leg

It's a pose I enjoy but I do wonder whether I'm doing it right, particularly as I have naturally open hips and find it easy to fold forward in pigeon.

    Mat ripping up my feet?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:06 PM PST

Does anybody else have incredibly dry & cracked feet that worsen with frequent practice? For reference I'm using a Jade Harmony mat, which I actually love. It's definitely sticky. The problem seems to be that this "stickiness" is actually rubbing away at my skin & drying it out. Feels like I'm grating my feet against a giant eraser for 60 minute intervals.

Any suggestions? (besides moisturizer) Is this common?

    Total newbie on yoga

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:25 AM PST

    Hi,

I am a total newbie on yoga. I would like to do yoga to gain mental benefits, but the physical ones are a big plus. I wish to do real, authentic yoga, and not the westernized yoga. Do anybody have tips on what I should begin with?

    Tailbone pain, overweight, help

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:51 PM PST

For practically my whole life I have been overweight. Multiple times I have gone on a workout kick, but each time I get dissuaded because of this issue. Whenever I'm laying on my back for abdominal work, it feels like my low back/tailbone/pelvis is pressed into the floor. Even with my 1" mat between me and the floor, it hurts. I've tried folding my mat but that doesn't relieve the discomfort. I don't have any other concerns (no tingling down my spine or legs) so I don't feel it is a nerve or health issue. I worry that my weight is having a very large impact on this specific issue and I don't know how to manage it.

    Favorite clothing for your practice??

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:48 PM PST

I'm booking a 30 day yoga training and want to buy some new clothes before I go. I always love lululemon and athleta, but have never bought it retail, always secondhand. What are some of your favorite brands? I kind of want to treat myself to some new items so I can pack outfits.

I have VERY long femurs and arms, but a short torso and short shins. I know I need to make adjustments for my proportions, but I cannot find any resources to help me.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:36 PM PST

If you saw me in person you'd probably agree that I am basically a chest that immediately turns into legs. I'm only 5'4" and my proportions look silly.

My femurs are longer than my torso. When I'm in child's pose, my face is basically in between my knees, which go beyond my shoulders. I don't know where to put my torso in any kind of lunge because my legs get in the way of my shoulders. Chair pose is almost impossible unless I'm almost facing the floor.

I don't mean to sound defeatist or anything. I know I can still do yoga, but I find that many cues aren't really helpful for me and I'm afraid I've been damaging myself from my attempts to follow instructions word-for-word.

Can anyone here help me or point me to a resource I could use? I'd post photos to show what's going on but I'm not super comfortable attaching my face to this account.

    Older-aged yoga?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST

Hi everyone! First post here. I've been meditating for a little over a year, and started doing yoga a few weeks ago. I. LOVE. IT. I've been doing the Yoga with Adriene videos on YouTube, and can already tell this is a thing I'm going to do for a long time.

My question to you all: my mother in law recently got through bone cancer. She's got anxiety and her doctor prescribed her Lamictal but she doesn't really want to do that. (We are not against medicine or anything like that... but my husband takes it for his epilepsy and that med is no joke... and obviously an alternative is better)

My question to all you beautiful people... is there a YouTube yogi you'd recommend? Someone who goes at a slower pace and focuses on breathing and also hopefully anxiety and related things?

Thank you all so much in advance.

How important is posture to breath practice?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:20 PM PST

Virtually every guided pranayama session I can find involves sitting cross legged or in a version of lotus. Due to knee issues these postures can be painful and distracting for me, and I really shouldn't sit that way for too long. Will this reduce the effectiveness of the practice?

Wrist strengthening and stretching to prevent overuse/ tendinitis issues?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 09:57 AM PST

I have seen a lot of previous posts on wrist pain, but I was hoping to pick your brains- I could really use a bit of your wisdom.

I've been a massage therapist for 11 years, and I stopped my yoga practice a few years back because I felt like I was asking too much of my wrists and hands. Massage therapists have very short careers, and I love what I do.

Due to injuries and illnesses over the last year I'm working really hard to take better care of myself. Due to some of my health issues, I've lost nearly 60 pounds (silver linings!) so I can finally run again! Progress is progress, and I want to keep moving forward! Plus, I feel so much better mentally and physically when I get to practice.

Is there a special technique to wrap or tape my wrists for extra support?

Maybe there's a yogi who specializes in only standing yoga? I could alternate days, or something... A special technique I can incorporate into my daily work or workouts?

I have heard instructors talk about rooting the whole hand into the ground, and I'm focusing on proper full body technique so I'm not just cranking my joints... but I'm not an expert.

Have any of you found the one exercise/ stretch that makes it possible for you to do yoga every day without wrist/ carpal pain?

I have my normal stretches I use daily for massage self care... but they aren't quite enough, so I get inflamed from finger to shoulder. Ice is great, but it's there specific preventative care I can do daily, as well?

I've never had any wrist/ hand injuries or issues, just want to avoid tendinitis/ repetitive stress issues. I still need to do my 100 hours of massage a month. Bills to pay, mouths to feed.

How to find free live online yoga classes?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:51 PM PST

Every now and then I see instructors or studios offering a free online live class. Sometimes it's pay what you can. Anyone know if there is a central resource for such offerings?

As a new teacher I am thinking off offering a free class once a week, but not sure where to list to grab attention from strangers on the Internet. Any ideas or links to others already doing this are much appreciated!

    Attracted to feet

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:02 PM PST

I feel like yoga and meditation would help me in so many ways but I can't bring myself to do it because I am sexually attracted to bare feet, and the yoga community is full of it. If I watch a yoga video all i will be doing is staring at the person's feet all the time. Do you guys have any tips on this

Hugger Mugger bolster painful to use?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:01 AM PST

Have any of ya'll had issues with bolsters being TOO firm that they hurt to use?

I just got the Hugger Mugger round bolster, and was so dissapointmented to find out I almost can't even use it. It digs in the most painful places on me, and when I do something like child's pose on it, my chest bones hurt so much to fully melt into the pose.

By no means am I scrawny, I'd say pretty average, so imagine my shock when it my bones hurt to use the bolster?

I tried putting a blanket on top but I'm also struggling with that as well, ughh.
