I miss coming into the studio so much Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST I miss coming into the stuido, the smell. the quiet, the wood floors, the free yoga book shelf, the water pitcher and bathroom, all the different people, the yoga room. The start of the class, the middle of the class, the end of the class. Slowly putting props away. Talking a little, saying good bye. Saying thank you. The walk home by the rose garden. It was such a beautiful feeling. I miss it so much. I mostly miss the people. Its not the same on zoom. Not at all. I am grateful to still have access to wonderful teachers. But I miss being there, physically present. It had such a profound affect on me, to surrender in the presence of others. So much trust started coming in. I'm not really feeling that over zoom.....When I click out of the meeting, I cant help feeing that something is missing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:16 AM PST Would anyone be interested in starting a Reddit accountability chat to do 100 days of yoga? Today is day 1 for me and I'd love to have some support and be able to provide support. I would consider myself slightly above novice [link] [comments] |

I love how setting goals has changed my practice! Posted: 01 Feb 2021 11:24 AM PST For the first time, some of the goals I set for the new year are to achieve specific poses, and I love how this has added intentionality to my practice. Most days I follow classes on YouTube, and now I choose classes based on these long-term goals I'm working toward, rather than randomly selecting a class. Not all classes must specifically feature the particular poses, but often they are geared toward strength or flexibility of an area that will help me achieve my goal poses. For instance, I'm workong toward splits, so I've been doing more hamstring flexibility classes. Similarly, forearm stand is a 2021 goal pose, so I'm working on improving my upper body strength. Anyway, wanted to share because I feel like my practice has been reinvigorated in a new way! Setting goals of specific poses proved more effective and exciting for me than, say, aiming to do yoga X times per week or X minutes per day. [link] [comments] |
Credible resources on yogic philosophy? (not hatha yoga(exercise yoga)) Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:54 PM PST Hi, I'm not sure where to begin with learning traditional yoga: bhakti yoga, jhana yoga, karma yoga, and raja yoga. Does anyone have any recommendations on books that I can learn more from? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:09 PM PST This is kind of a weird one, but do any of you have hammer toes? Or have any of you experienced having toe cramps when pressing your weight into the top of your foot? It went away when I took a short break. But is it common? I got surgery in one foot but still need it in the other foot. This is the first time I've experienced anything like this. Sharp pain on right side of lower right heel when in downward dog or heel is extended...? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:06 PM PST When I am walking i have no pain but when I am in downward dog or I extend my heel there is a sharp pain the right side of my lower right heel. I don't know what caused it, I have felt it for the last 8 days when I am doing yoga and it has not gone away. There is nothing visibly wrong... I have attached a pic and circled where in the heel I am feeling the pain. heel [link] [comments] |

Possible Yoga related injury? abdominal pain and chest tightness that has not gone away. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST *Reposting for my partner to hopefully get some answers* Hello everyone. I suffer from horrible symptoms which made me run to different medical doctors without any diagnosis. I excessively did the cobra stretch to gain more flexibility weeks ago. Since I did that, I have immense trouble with my abdominal area when it comes to breathing. I had a barium swallow, a endoscopy and ultrasound. Everything seems alright. Also had breathing tests and blood tests which were normal. However, I suffer from strong problems in my diaphragm area. It's especially strong when walking and when standing straight. There is tightness in my diaphragm area which makes a deep breath almost impossible. It's like having a tight belt around my abdominal area. Normally breathing for me was easy and I didn't have to pay any attention to it. Now it's almost like a workout to breathe normally. I also suffer from severe bloating after drinking or eating anything (even water), tense feeling in the stomach, inability to take deep breaths (only possible when laying down in certain positions), back pain, tachycardia and heart palpitations to the point I feel like fainting and get cold hands. I was checked by a cardiologist and everything is fine. Driving with the belt around my stomach area makes everything worse and even causes chest pains. Now I am sure I have overstretched or weakened something with the cobra stretch that caused a muscular imbalance. Right after the cobra stretch I had the worst heart palpitations and broke out in sweat. Two days ago I did a breathing test to check for SIBO. When I breathed out strongly against resistance I almost passed out because my heart started fluttering and skipping beats. I guess it's a stomach distension and a problem with the diaphragm pushing against the heart due to gas and posture problems. How can I fix it? I feel lightheaded all the time I can barely get my work done anymore. And right after eating or swallowing anything, I have huge chest pressure and shallow breathing. If you have any idea please let me know. [link] [comments] |

Stretches for upper back pain.. any poses that give a similar sensation to rabbit pose? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:06 AM PST I've been dealing with upper back pain and knots in the area above and between my shoulder blades (trapezius, maybe). Sometimes it is to the point where I am not able to sleep. It has been difficult for me to find poses that give this spot a really good stretch. So far the best I have found is rabbit pose and leaning back in east seat with my hands on my knees. Cat/Cow helps a bit too. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions or thoughts? Question related to health in our later years. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:13 AM PST Does any reddit user here know whether regular practice in yoga over their many years has lead to less health problems in old age? (I take it diet also is a factor, which I'm aware is a principle in ashtanga yoga). As in are there friends around them suffering from this or that while they seem to be healthier overall? Have they noticed even whether poor practice over time has lead to them suffering later on in life? [link] [comments] |
(question) I can't breathe while doing shoulder stand or plough pose. How can i change this? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:59 AM PST I am a heavy-chested woman and while I have no issue coming into the shoulder stand and going into plough pose, the weight of my chest makes it very difficult to breathe properly. Any tips on form? Or practice tips I could work on? Please help me! Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:30 AM PST Hello, so I've been practicing Yoga for about a year and a half now and feel the need to step up my practise, however I'm uncertain of how to move forward with it all. For some context, I started yoga back in the summer of 2019 and did group classes at my university until the pandemic broke out and we went into lockdown. I enjoyed it but didn't take it too seriously at the time but once we were in lockdown, I spent a lot more time and focus on it, mainly using various online videos, mainly, the OG, Yoga with Adrienne. I feel I am getting for too comfortable with this type of practise and having just finished her 30 day Breathe series, I feel its time I stepped it up a level into more advanced routines. I've been looking around online for a while into different styles, instructors and groups but it mostly seems to be tailored towards beginners. I don't really know where to go now to really advance myself, I hope to one day maybe become an instructor myself but I don't know enough about yoga to begin that process yet so I feel i'm stuck in this odd middle ground. With in-person classes not being possible for a while where I'm living I'm wondering if you have any advice on how to take the next steps forward independently or if some of you have been in a similar position and how you then managed to find a way out. P.s I have also read the FAQs and unfortunately didn't get much from them, hence the post. Thank you all x [link] [comments] |
Hatha Yoga - The Yogi Philosophy of Physical Well-being [PDF/Audio OC] Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:24 AM PST Hatha Yoga is that branch of the Yoga Philosophy which deals with the physical body -- its care -- its well‑being -- its health -- its strength -- and all that tends to keep it in its natural and normal state of health. It teaches a natural mode of living and voices the cry which has been taken up by many of the Western world: "Let us get back to Nature," excepting that the Yogi does not have to get back for he is already there, for he has always clung close to nature and her ways, and has not been dazzled and befooled by the mad rush toward externals which has caused the modern civilized races to forget that such a thing as nature existed... [Yogis] know that the body is the instrument in which, and by which the Spirit manifests and works. They know that the fleshly covering is necessary for Man's manifestation and growth in this particular stage of his development. They know that the body is the Temple of the Spirit. And they, consequently, believe that the care and development of the body is as worthy a task as is the development of some of the higher parts of Man, for with an unhealthy and imperfectly developed physical body, the mind cannot function properly, nor can the instrument be used to the best advantage by its master, the Spirit. It is true that the Yogi goes beyond this point, and insists that the body be brought under the perfect control of the mind -- that the instrument be finely turned so as to be responsive to the touch of the hand of the master. But the Yogi knows that the highest degree of responsiveness on the part of the body may be obtained only when it, the body, is properly cared for, nourished and developed. The highly trained body must, first of all be a strong healthy body. For these reasons the Yogi pays such great attention and care to the physical side of his nature, and, for the same reason, the Oriental system of Physical Culture forms a part of the Yogi science of Hatha Yoga. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:26 AM PST Hi! I'm fairly new to yoga, but struggle with a few positions. I can't put weight through my right shin when I kneel after a reconstructive surgery that left me with pins in my shin and nerve damage. I was wondering if there was a way to adapt poses that require kneeling, like child's pose? I'm currently using a blanket, or a pillow to support my right shin and keep myself from putting pressure through it, but I wanted to see if anyone has any product recommendations to help or even just general advice!
