    Meditation is not...

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:31 PM PDT

...trying to calm the surface of the mind. It is allowing the mind to settle to the place where it is always calm.

The surface of the mind, like the surface of the ocean, is often choppy. Trying to quiet the mind, like trying to go deep, is often fruitless and frustrating. Because the part of you that tries, and the part the evaluates and criticizes the effort...these are the shallowest, noisiest parts of you.

Meditation is both easier and deeper when you learn how to stop trying and go with the flow.

    The day I stopped caring.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 04:36 AM PDT

I used to be worried about how my life is going to turn out in the future but now, I don't care anymore. Once I stopped being afraid of death, all my other fears melted away. I think whatever it is people are afraid of, ultimately it's the fear of death and you're not really free until death doesn't frighten you anymore.

I used care about how often I worked so that society would think I'm a productive member but now, I don't give a shit anymore. I don't even want to be a part of this society.

I used to get bummed out when I made music and no one listened to it but now, I don't care anymore. I realize that I'll probably never make a living off my music but that won't stop me from creating it.

I used to chase girls and seek their validation but now, I don't care anymore. I realize that I can't be free until I stop depending on other people to make me happy.

I used to always feel bad when I didn't have plans for the week and the weekend but now, I don't care anymore. I prefer solitude over hanging out with people who aren't on the same wavelength as me.

I don't care anymore and I love it. In the end, we all end up in the dirt and all the things that seemed so important while we were alive are not going to matter, so why trouble myself with any of it?

The day I stopped caring was the day I really started living, and I even wrote a song about it called 'I Stopped Caring in '97'.

How do you get yourself to meditate every day?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:16 PM PDT

    Hello, my spiritual friends.
I want to meditate for one hour every day for a year without a break. Breath-watching meditation is a great tool to elevate our consciousness. The process itself though is boring. Sitting and watching the breath for hours puts me off. Keeping my awareness on the breath while my brain wants to wallow around in the pool of its thoughts is taxing. Every day I have to coax myself into sitting for meditation while my mind comes up with new excuses not to.

What tools, tricks, apps, technology, do you use that helps you meditate daily? Or do you have some words that you say to yourself, that helps you sit for meditation every day?

    Less to say since meditating?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I'm finding since I've been meditating more (albeit it, slow progress on the cushion), that I do not have as much to say and am generally more quiet around people.

I want to converse. But I literally have nothing to say sometimes, and I'm finding superficial talk about football (that usually fills the time) less alluring.

Is this a normal part of meditating? Does it change?

    Question

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:28 AM PDT

During my practice I had some strange sensations... I felt like there was pressure from both sides of my face sort of compressing my face ... and my eyelids I could feel were quivering rapidly. It almost felt like my face was slowly vanishing or being compressed? Hard to explain... I could still think though which is I guess the strange part? I was still aware of everything that was happening and my mind could consciously ask myself questions but there were no answers, I was just blank. Typically if I ask myself a question, my brain answers or talks back but now I asked myself a question and there was no response. So then I asked myself another question. What just happened? I am not well versed in meditation so I am trying to make sense of what's happening and where I'm headed or any suggestions.

The “unwoken” are living in a dream?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:42 PM PDT

This occurred to me while I was trying to mindfully run today. Thoughts emerge out of nowhere. So far I have been unable to pinpoint the exact moment that they materialize and only realize that I am "thinking the thought" at least a few seconds after they emerge. It is very similar to one's inability to pinpoint the exact moment one falls asleep. So in a way, night dreaming and day dreaming are very similar - in both instances, we cannot control what thoughts emerge, and in both instances, we tend to believe the content of the thoughts. In this way, life really is a dream for those who have not cultivated awareness.

Why does meditation give me nothing?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:42 PM PDT

Meditation promises so much benefits : happiness, focus, self-awareness, reduction of stress, increase creativity and imagination, etc. I've tried many times in my life to have a daily substantial routine. But even with probably a thousand of sessions, I still see no benefit of it. In fact, even though I'm really interested about whatever touch the mind, the psychology, etc. I find that meditate is the most boring thing in the world. I have to put a massive massive amount of concentration to see some result, and not being involved in more interesting things in my head. Thinking about my projets, for instance, brings me dopamine, serotonin... Just be quiet and watching my thoughts is just a massive devotion of effort that leads almost all the time to nothing. From my experiences, only 1% of my sessions have result to some benefits (a clear and profound mind).

Does meditation is not for me ? Is my level of stress is already too low to really benefit of it? Do after spending a lot of time too reading from multiple sources about techniques and tips, there's still something I don't get ? Life would be so fun if you only had to put your butt on the cushion with a reasonnable amount of effort to "get high". But I feel I would need to sit for hours everyday for years to finally get the soo precious and beloved promises that meditation should give.

Is it good if I can enter an instant trance when I meditate?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 12:53 PM PDT

I've been meditating for a while now, and whenever I meditate, it takes me 10 seconds, and then I enter a trance, where time and reality have no effect.

    Finally, Warm Hands

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:36 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a guy who most of the time has frozen hands. I hate that about myself, literally nothing could warm my hands, wearing gloves doesn't work, rubbing my hands doesn't work, nothing works for me. But I've noticed something really amazing when I meditate, in that period of time (usually 10 minutes) my hands get warm. How long this effect lasts might differ, but I really love this about meditating. Does anyone know why this works for me? What happened inside of me that I get to warm my hands?

Has my new mental clarity came as a result of my meditation?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PDT

Hi all, I've been practicing meditation for around 2 months now, and although I have in the past not been certain that I was meditating correctly, I have noticed a change in the way I'm thinking and I wonder if it has something to do with the meditation.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that I have a clear vision for my future and my self-identity, I now know where I see myself in 5-10 years time and what my ideal self looks like. Whereas a few months ago, I was confused to what I want to do after university.

I've also noticed that I no longer skip workouts or am distracted when studying, my motivation and productivity has gone up ten fold.

Has this new mindset come as a result of meditation? Or am I just experiencing a temporary rise of self discipline and clarity

    Refreshing meditation experience

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:51 AM PDT

I started meditation roughly 11 years ago and am a daily practitioner.

First I was amazed that thoughts and sensory impressions were not really 2 separate things, after a while I was able to keep present when outside formal practice more and recently I had a few Samedhi like experiences. I am so happy that this is part of my life and it enriched me clearly.

But what I notices for the past 3 years was that I have a harder time to keep things fresh and stay in beginner's mind. It seems like experiences that I had in the beginning of meditation (perceiving my body more clearly, sensing feelings as bodily expressions) are now harder to get and if I do the same type of practice (most times I meditate with the „Waking Up" App) my mind wanders more and more.

What I found that acts a bit like a countermeasure is to keep the practice really simple and just go back to breathing in silence for some time. Variety in length of sessions works to some degree as well. But my question to the community is if this is a common experience and what helped you against it?

Mindfulness Helps Bring Us Into The Now

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:00 PM PDT

Here are some things Mindfulness has taught me About The Now:

As Human Beings we exist within the present moment, while also having the capability within our minds to think about the past and future

Reflecting on our past and planning for the future are logical things to do. However, at times we can become lost in our thinking about the past or future to the point where we become disconnected from What is Happening Right Now

When we are mindful, we understand that Right Now is ultimately the moment direct experience that we can interact with. It begins with being present with our thoughts and feelings

When we are present, we may notice the things that we usually overlook. We notice how the feelings in our body impact the thoughts in our mind, vice versa. We notice our natural impulses and our habits (thought and behavioural patterns), and we notice how we feel in certain physical or social environments

Within all of the noticing, we become also become acutely aware of one thing that seems to Remain Throughout The Duration Of Our Lives, which is that We Are Constantly In This Experience of Right Now

Our past is gone in the form of memory, and tomorrow is not yet here. We are in this seamless construction of a moment to moment experience, like pages in a chapter and chapters in a book, the book titled "The Life Of — Insert Name Here"

Within the Now we recognize that we are living our own individual life inside of our Sense of Self, and that it is ultimately up to us to figure out what we want for ourselves and begin aligning our day to day existence with that goal

Each Day We Make History by living a day that has not yet been lived. Each day we experience ourselves interact with the world and come in direct contact with the unknown

Ultimately what we choose to do or not to do in our present moment greatly influences where we will end up in our life. So begin aligning your life Today with the life you wish to lead and create in Tomorrow

My thought on human value systems...

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:29 AM PDT

Hello friends, I wrote down some thoughts of how people use value systems, in case someone would be interested in reading and discussing them... :)

Since the dawn of time, when first protohumans climbed down from trees and started building a civilization, being unable to perceive the whole reality as it is, they started creating cognitive tools that would help them explore, simplify and interpret the surrounding world in a way necessary to at least survive and procreate.

And one of such tools, needed to orient oneself in the world, is a value system.

As David Hume pointed out, "you cannot derive an ought from an is", meaning you cannot come to a value judgement from a scientific observation.

Therefor any claims of "we do not need faith, as we have science!" are absurd. Science is a great tool for exploring the natural world, but it is completely unable to tell you how to use the results of this exploration. It can tell you how to split atoms, yet whether you should split them in a power plant or above an enemy city is a value judgment.

Usually, people are indoctrinated into those values systems by a religion, philosophy or culture in general. Sometimes people are able to construct their own systems. Afterwards confirmation bias kicks in and the adept starts seeing his value system as the one and only true, while competing systems are perceived as delusional.

Such bias clearly has its evolutionary advantages, as people sharing the same value system can act in unison and be victorious over those, who are unable to cooperate due to different value system.

So, while value systems are arbitrary, at times it might be beneficial to act as if they are not.

Usually, such value systems come down to answering the following three questions:

    1. how did the universe come into being?
    2. what is our relationship with the world? / what is our life goal? / how we should treat each other?
    3. what happens after death?

It might be wise to evaluate those systems not from perspective of perceived truth (as none of them can be objectively proven to be true or false), but rather by their effect on the individual and the society in general.

For a value system to become viral, it usually needs to be at least loosely based in what is known as a "hero's journey" – hero feels a call to adventure, finds some supernatural guidance, fights the dragon, usually dies in some way, but then is reborn to guide his disciples to paradise.

It seems that whether this journey contains a supernatural being or not is just a "marketing gimmick". Therefor all those arguments between theists and atheists are futile, as instead of focusing on the values proposed by the given system, they focus whether the hero had his revelation after studying in a library or rather after inhaling a burning bush and supposedly communicating with a supernatural deity.

Author believes it is wise to pick a desired outcome on a dogmatic level (because I said so) and then pragmatically chose a value system that would most likely lead to the given outcome in a particular situation. In other words, pick the ends dogmatically, then choose the means pragmatically.

Any means are good, as long as they work in the current situation and are not counter-productive to the end goal. If one discovers that the given means do not work, he should reevaluate the situation and choose more appropriate means.

Unfortunately, most people do it vice versathey link their self-worth with using some particular means, convince themselves that those means are the only true and will lead them to the best outcome possible, and then follow them blindly, without an exact end in mind. Even seeing that those means do are not working in the given situation, people often are unable to reconsider and keep pushing until the system crumbles on itself.

    You are your thoughts

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:11 PM PDT

I'd like to offer a contrary perspective to what you usually hear.

In the end, it's all just concepts, pointing one way or another.

    You are your thoughts.

You are nothing but your thoughts.

When there's no thoughts, only the unspeakable is left.

There's no substrate for "you" to exist of when there's no thought.

There is really no fixed point of "you" that sits in the middle of your head and watches thoughts go by.

Rather, you find yourself in the middle of thoughts, the feeling of "you" starts to appear only in the middle of thoughts.

There is no you outside of thoughts.

Attention is drawn into thoughts, attention gets spun around by thoughts, and a you appears.

Then, when thoughts get more transparent, or when attention gets a bit tired of thoughts and shakes them of, you disappear too.

The feeling of "you" is a process, namely a thought process.

You are made 100% of thoughts.

    No you without thoughts.

Crystal felt like it burnt my hand?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:12 PM PDT

So i was meditating, and i was holding a crystal in my palm. I was about 10 minutes into my meditation and then all of a sudden it felt like it got super hot like a burning sensation or maybe evening a stinging? It shocked me right out of my meditation and my hand jolted and i threw the crystal out of my hand so fast. Even after a little while had gone by I could still feel the part of my palm it was on and it still feels burnt/ stinging. I was holding a blue moonstone. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? Or what this could mean? It was quite startling.
