Pranayama: Holistic Combination Of Breathwork For Mindfulness |
Holistic Combination Of Breathwork For Mindfulness Posted: 29 Apr 2021 06:52 AM PDT Tl;dr: would it be fruitful to think about pranayama exercises in the linguistic terms and cultural categories of other types of spirituality (especially enneagram), or am I on a fool's errand and why? Hello I'm new to anything pranayama or breathwork or kundalini. I come from a Catholic family, but i am interested primarily in mindfulness (which Jesus called "love", and equated with his "kingdom of heaven"). I study Daoism and the Catholic mystics and the Desert Fathers; I have a lay ordination in Soto Zen; and I study the Western mindfulness system called enneagram. In Soto Zen there is an emphasis on the idea that many won't achieve the goal, and that being invested in the process is more important; the mind will be ready if and when we create the conditions for it. To that end, I've been thinking about whether or not different types of breathing meditations will help me create those conditions. I don't believe in hidden physical chakras, and rather, I'm trying to understand what kinds of emotional and mental concepts people are talking about when they talk about the subtle body. By this way of thinking I've concluded that i would like to try to incorporate into my practice exercises that relate to the character traits I want to cultivate in me in order to "cultivate the empty field". Is it not recommended to pick and choose what breath exercises I should do? Is there a set program or anything I should be aware of? Is it wrong to think about pranayama in this way at all? For example, according to the enneagram, I should cultivate a greater sense of self power and inner drive, so I'd like to try the breath of fire meditation; i need to become more aware and in touch with my anger, which I subconsciously suppress until it explodes. According to my limited reading, the character traits I should cultivate to become a more self aware and self integrated/actualized person may correspond with "opening" various chakras, like the sacral and solar plexus in particular. Lastly, when i have tried what little guided meditation i have, i always hyperventilate, so i think i must not be practicing correctly, if anyone can point me in the right direction there . Any and all input welcome [link] [comments] |
