Meditation: I didn't realize how beneficial meditation was until I stopped.

I didn't realize how beneficial meditation was until I stopped.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:04 PM PDT

So I've just come off a streak of meditating for 20 days straight. 20 minutes in the morning. Yesterday I had to get up super early so my schedule was off and didn't meditate. Today, I slept in and haven't meditated yet. It's now about 4 in the afternoon as I'm writing.

Wow have I really noticed the effect of suddenly stopping! Today I have extreme brain fog, I can't really concentrate on anything. This is crazy, I don't remember feeling like this before I started. But I guess the change was so gradual that I didn't really think having that 20 minutes to concentrate on my breath every morning was really doing anything. Sometimes maybe this is a good thing to see the actual progress that I've made. Regardless, I will be doing twenty minutes after dinner tonight, that's for sure. And I will get back into my regular routine tomorrow morning. Just thought I would share. If you don't think you're making any progress, you might be surprised.

I’m extremely fortunate I found meditation when I did.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:09 AM PDT

I first picked up meditation in late 2019. Initially, I was looking for more mystical/deeper-meaning-to-life kind of experiences. While mystical experiences have mostly eluded me, practical benefits have been undeniable and I firmly believe meditation has helped me through the last 2 years, which I would consider the most turbulent of my life - COVID aside.

In June of last year, I lost my grandfather. Last Wednesday, I was informed I will likely be saying goodbye to my pup who I bought on a whim my sophomore year of college, 8 years ago.

It has been hard, as it should be. But meditation has allowed me to be present and express gratitude in a way I wouldn't have known how to before 2019. I'm grateful that I'm able to be present during these crazy times and truly take in the experience of going through this.

Meditation has made life a much richer experience for me. So I'm thankful for that.

Let's talk about knowing your "intuitive" voice vs the voice from the ego

    Posted: 02 May 2021 08:13 PM PDT

I struggle with this one. This has been my number one problem my whole life. I can't tell within me what is right, or true, or if it's just my "trauma" speaking or what. I've listened to quite a few spiritual teachers on this and it's made me more confused haha. Here's what I've gathered....

-If it is a "pushy" voice it is ego

    - but sometimes, when we are not doing what our hearts call us to do we can hear a pushy voice from our soul?

-Is the voice coming from fear?

-Sometimes fear is an intuitive voice, like feeling like a situation is not right..could be from an accurate place

Basically, in my experience, when I get into a relationship I get this overwhelming depressive feeling of not being free. I can't tell if it's a calling to be alone, or it's just my ego/trauma feeling caged + afraid of commitment. The person could be absolutely stunning and amazing, and I just get this feeling like I shouldn't be in a relationship right now. Part of me doesn't wanna give up what I have because I feel like it shouldn't matter what I do. But I tend to always get this feeling when I get into one at this point in my life.

In meditation, I just practice on letting go of the question of if it's right and let the universe take over....but idk if that's avoidance of a decision. I am always confused hahaha

    Your life is your practice

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:54 PM PDT

Meditation has had a profound impact on my life.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:40 PM PDT

I am a relative newbie - started at the beginning of the year with a plan to meditate every day. Still going strong with that goal!

At the beginning it was difficult, sitting for maybe 3-5 minutes - even guided sessions were a struggle.

For some reason, it's like the practice has just "clicked" for me. All of a sudden I'm craving the quiet and can easily blast through 10-20 minute unguided sessions.

The spring weather has allowed me to do some meditations down by the beach, and the other day walking home afterwards it started to rain. Normally I'd be frustrated - being caught outside, getting wet, etc. But for some reason, I was just able to "be" in that moment.

I was quickly overcome with the beauty of the rain and it's life giving powers. The sun poking through the clouds brought an extra element of life to the experience and I literally started tearing up standing on the sidewalk. There was nothing more to life other than this moment and it was so incredibly beautiful.

Ever since starting regular meditation I am finding it easier to bring this mindset of presence to other areas of my life, and it's been so enriching. Big decisions are easier with less distraction, emotions are still as strong as ever but easier to make peace with and continue forward from.

I am excited to continue this wondrous journey and see what else it can bring to my life. Happy days all!

For anyone who live's with OCD, Intrusive thoughts or Obsessional thinking... Have you tried Zazen?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:44 AM PDT

This is my first post here but I wanted to share my meditation experience to help others who may be living with, or have gone through similar things to me.

For the last seven months (may be more or less I'm not counting) I have been practicing Zazen meditation, specifically Shikantaza. I had practised different types of meditation before this on and off. I found meditation to actually be quite anxiety inducing for a number of reasons, I won't go into too much detail here. But it wasn't until I discovered Zen, that meditation really clicked with me.

For me, and maybe you have similar experiences if you have OCD. Counting breaths, mantra, timing my meditation and even bringing the attention back to the breath all became a new compulsion or a new obsession and actually caused me to experience anxiety during my meditation. It wasn't until I started doing Shikantaza and I just let go and purely 'just sat' with awareness, that I could let go of all these anchors and just sit in the moment, allowing everything to be as it is without any judgement or need to cling to any specific thing.

I'm not saying that any other forms or meditation aren't as good or are bad (that would be judgement!) but for someone with a very obsessionial brain practising non goal orientated meditation and learning to be there in the moment and letting go of my thoughts no matter how difficult or anxiety inducing they may be is truly liberating!

Edit: Not sure why I put 'Live's' in the title

When do the positive benefits of meditation begin to plateau?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:48 AM PDT

If I meditate for two years, will I continue to get more benefits by the time it's been four? Or ten?

Anyone elses cat attracted to meditation?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 04:35 AM PDT

My cat is very hyperactive and hates to sit in anyones lap, he barely tolerates petting, except when im meditating (and ive noticed this too many times to be a coincidence) he always crawls up to the couch and lays in my lap, my theory is that they can sense energies and are attracted to the positive/peaceful energy of meditation. Does anyone else experience this?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:03 PM PDT

I haven't felt like I felt today in a while. I need somebody to tell me the secret to meditate. I can't seem to do it. It's really hard for me. The longest I've meditated was for 2 mins. It scary when I do it I feel like I'm going to explode. I've tried to ignore the feeling but I just burst out and yell like I just had a nightmare. I have zero friends I'm alone no one likes me. I've been doing nofap for a while which did better my life but today and this week been hell. Everyone gives credit to meditation but I can't seem to be able to do it please help.

    Why I stayed meditating

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:21 PM PDT

    Trigger Warning ⚠️

When I was younger, I ignored my mental health. I took my internal struggles as natural. Little did I know, I had a underlying condition known as bipolar 2 disorder. Not everyone who meditates has mental health issues though.

Anyway, I made mistakes that leave me feeling awful. I would hurt myself, scratching at my skin to the point I bled. Thankfully, I finally consulted a mental health professional following an attempted suicide. I am currently medicated and on a road to recovery.

I began meditating before my first depressive episode (the low in bipolar). It was simple 10 minutes breathing exercises. When I was in a depressive state, I would meditate. Sometimes my mind would wander back to the places it used to be. I would become scared and panic.

Following my session, I'd feel like I achieved nothing. That was until I realized that meditation is about achieving, it's more about relaxing and feeling.

It also helped to stop forcing myself to meditate. It better to meditate when you are ready, not making it a chore.

It's a bit sappy, I know but it's my story. I'm improving and I hope you are too.

Direct use of energy - looking for feedback

    Posted: 02 May 2021 02:46 PM PDT

A few months back I decided to see if I could improve my exercise by focusing on energy build-up. The exercise I focused on is pushups. I have been doing them for years - easy to do while on business trips. I was doing pretty well - about 250 push-ups down in 3 sets. 3 days on, 2 days off. During meditation I focus on energy building. When I do pushups, I focus on the energy zones for a few seconds prior and try to focus on the zones will doing to the pushups. I am currently averaging about 360 pushups in 4 sets, but often go over 400. Has anyone else have similar experiences?

Problems with reintroducing a meditative routine in my life

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:31 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I've always been interested in meditation and started meditating daily in october 2016.

Everything was going well : I meditated every day and even had the chance to take part in several silent retreats which were great.

Then enter 2020. I completely stopped meditating after my beloved kitty passed away in March. Covid-related anxiety made it really hard to sit on my zafu.

It's been more than a year now and I still feel blocked by something. Sitting on a zafu, walking meditation or body scans seem really unappealing to me even tough a part of me longers for the peace meditation used to bring me.

What can I do to restart meditating ?

    Feeling very warm during meditation

    Posted: 02 May 2021 02:20 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I practice meditation for several years and for over a year I meditate on daily basis. There is one thing that happens to me on regular basis ever since the beginning of my journey, but so far I wasn't able figure out what triggers it. During meditation I start feeling an inner warmth and by the end of the session my forehead is totally sweating (just the forehead, any other part of the body). It's not because of the temperature in the room as I do not experience any warmth prior or after meditating. Has anyone came across this or is there anybody experiencing the same thing?

Seeing through the illusion of ego on acid: A short trip report

    Posted: 02 May 2021 03:13 PM PDT

A funny thing happened a few days ago. After a day of quiet yogasana and kriya yoga i decided to take a little more than 200ug of acid.

When the peak arrived i sat in formal meditation. Beginning with zen for concentration i moved to kriya and finished with Self Enquiry. But the interesting thing began only later. It being an hour long session i was stiff and decided to stretch my legs and arms.

As i was wiggling my toes i noticed my legs didn't really look like my legs in the dark. When i turned my attention to the hands their outlines dissolved into blurry nothingness. I looked at my right forearm and it disappeared as if an illusion! Needless to say i was quite alarmed, since this was new territory. But i calmed myself by saying i asked for it.

The state left me in a calm bliss the rest of the trip that i spent binging on visuals as tremors surged through my body.

I later found out my experience was eerily similar to ram dass's mushroom experience. Only thing missing from it as it happened was me asking myself "Who's minding the store?"

Thanks for reading, have a great day!

Getting better at controlling sudden bouts of anger

    Posted: 02 May 2021 11:26 PM PDT

I used to be a really angry person.

Well, I still am, but not to the extent I was when I was younger.

I'm not sure if this is what the goal of meditation is supposed to be (although I think there is dharma backing it up, like the "two arrows" metaphor), but emotions are like waves. And when I was younger, I wanted to ride EVERY wave. I derived a sort of twisted pleasure from it. Now that I am older, and have experimented a lot with meditation, I mostly watch the waves and let them pass by.

Not only did I want to ride every wave when I was younger, but my solution to not get hurt while on those waves was to drown myself inside the crest so the water itself softens my blow -- ignoring that the intensity of the wave and me being part of it, is what will ultimately harm me.

All of this is to say that I replaced rumination with detached observation, which I cultivated in meditation, and this has helped me more than any proposition-based therapy I tried -- although those did help as well.

The problem for me really comes when I am in a very bad mood. Maybe because my sinusitis is acting up, which happens daily, maybe because things aren't good at work, which also happens daily. If someone triggers me, then I don't have time to watch the wave (like I do when I'm anxious or depressed), because it comes slamming right into me, and I act like a jerk. Most of the time I snap at that person, or I'm sarcastic with that person. Either way, I hurt them and push them away.

As for meditation practice, I used to do an auto-didactic "watching the breath", then tried Dr John Vervaeke's Vippasana/Metta/Praja meditation which was overwhelming, then switched to simple Zazen, which is what I am doing right now.

My question is, and this is especially directed to those people who successfully used meditation to control their anger: can you recommend specific meditation or practice to sever automatic behavior in response to sudden emotions, like anger? Or should I just patiently wait it out until meditation cures it?

TL;DR; I get overwhelmed by sudden anger sometimes, what can I do to give my mind space to control it?

    Last night's meditation

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:47 PM PDT

Three weeks ago I started to meditate almost every evening before bed. Most of the times it's really hard for me to fall asleep and meditating really helped me with that. First I was trying to meditate on my own with some daoist techniques but soon I've found Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche's teachings. I love all of his work, but there's one that teaches you how to expand your awareness. I've never understood what he meant by "expand your awareness up to space". Since I am always meditating before sleep my thoughts are really hard to calm due to sleepiness. But last night something happened. So I was listening to the same "awareness expanding" video and of course my thoughts were wondering a LOT and it was a bit hard to stay awake. But when he told to expand my awareness to space, for a second I finally understood what he meant by that and suddenly it was like my mind shifted. My whole body started to tingle and my mind became silent and the feeling of sleepiness went away completely. Soon I felt like I'm spinning, but not my body, "just me". The weird part was that I had the feeling that my hands have been turned 180° but just from my wrists. It was such a weird but peaceful and joyful experience... Can anybody explain me what happened? Specially the spinning and turned hands feeling.
