I developed a mental health related app for better instrospection!

    Posted: 30 May 2021 01:49 PM PDT

So basically last year I was feeling a bit low. I really didn't know how to become better since I had never faced this before. I used to not get proper sleep and woke up after having dreams due to my anxiety. So I just started noting what activities I did and whom I did it with in a google doc. Slowly I also started rating how I felt about the interaction. Soon I started to notice a pattern that I felt better when I hung out with some people and when I did certain activities. This way I was able to feel much better than before and I gained confidence that I can control my own mental health. I stopped dreaming as frequently since then. I even built an app for this so that other people can do the same .

The app is called Happyer which was made based on the above experience and provides insights into impact of a given activity or friend.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.happyer4life for android https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/happyer/id1537711110 for iOS.

I have created a subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Happyer/ to help easily address issues/bugs & to allow users to share their happy experiences :)

Also here is our website https://happyer4life.com if you would like to provide feedback, donate(to handle maintenance costs) or just know more about the app!

    My Prayer for the World

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:54 PM PDT

I pray for healing for our planet, and it's people.

I pray we each find peace and safety.

I pray we recognize cruelty is born from fear and pain.

I pray we find empathy for those who are suffering, and we provide help when we can.

I pray we recognize the humanity of others, especially those who are different from ourselves.

I pray we recognize challenges as opportunities, and negative experiences as opportunities to grow.

I pray we each grow to our full potential.

I am grateful for this life, and all that goes with it.

    ADHD and meditation

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:35 PM PDT

I might post this again on the ADHD sub but I thought I'd ask here first,

I try to meditate but I can never really focus cos there's always too many thoughts running through my head and my mind inevitably drifts off...Does anyone have experience or advice regarding this and what I could do? I really want to get into the habit of meditating but I even drift off to sleep sometimes halfway through

I've identified that by default I have a negative opinion on strangers. Would loving-kindness meditation help?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 04:10 PM PDT

Doing some introspection, I've seen that by default my initial reaction to strangers (or people I barely know) is negative. I assume they don't have any empathy or they aren't smart, or their opinions are harmful to society, etc.

I think this comes from being lonely due to lockdowns, and forced interactions with strangers tend to be because you need to solve an issue, which colors the interaction as negative, etc.

All of this combined with news and social media and polarization of society, I think are the causes of me kind of having the vague feeling of being wary of people I don't know, and assuming that they are either dumber than me or they have bad intentions, etc.

I don't like that feeling. I know that when you get to know people and understand where they come from, you see the beauty in them, and grow a connection even with people that are different and think differently than you.

How can I change this default view of strangers? Is loving-kindness meditation what I need?

are chakras for real? anyone worked on them?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 10:04 PM PDT

curious if this is a real thing. i've been trying to explore concentrating on specific spot of the body just to see if there's anything of substance in this method. so far i've only found that concentrating on certain parts make me excessively restless. Almost like a feeling that i need to start lifting more weights to build up the strength to be able handle this part. i'd love to hear if anyone's had any experience in this.

    Book recommendations on meditation?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:07 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have been regularly practicing meditation for the last ~5 months and found the practice to be greatly beneficial. I've mostly used the guided meditation App "Waking Up" and have quite enjoyed it thus far, however, I have the intuition that Apps can only get you so far, and that to improve my practice, some literature may be beneficial (perhaps that is unfair to the Apps out there and that's really all you need, who knows).

Thus my question: are there any books that more seasoned practitioners have found to be helpful? I am somewhat afraid to end up with some new age, esoteric nonsense if I just buy the first thing I find online, which I have no particular interest in. Neither am I interested in anything that is closely tied to any specific religious dogma. A third desideratum of mine is that the book should be (primarily) practical, i.e. on how to improve my practice, rather than the cultural, religious or philosophical context of meditation, the psychological benefits, etc.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations, have a good day!

    Breath has set me free

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:36 PM PDT

I've been meditating continuously for a little over a month now. I have also been watching and listening to all kind of Eckhart Tolle interviews and presentations, I feel he sheds light on conceptual thought beautifully. I think I've reached a point where I can focus on my breath even when I'm not meditating.. I could be at work wrenching away or even now as I type this..I can feel the sensation of breathing and it is absolutely beautiful. My thoughts may still have some kind of hold on me for now but majority of the time I can recognize that they are there and I'm able to just let it pass without it negatively effecting my emotions. When I do meditate I do so for at least 20 minutes every day and most of the time it feels like only 5 minutes have passed. The sensation of breath has set me free and I hope everyone here can achieve this mental freedom. Is it weird that I'm seeing these kind of results so quickly?

    Meditation Challenge June 2021

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:02 AM PDT

    Hi all!

We all know that it can be hard to start and maintain a regular sitting practice. So I wondered if anyone would care to join me in a daily meditation challenge for June 2021?

u/WCBH86 set up a monthly meditation challenge for the last 2 years or so, and it's really seemed to strike a chord here and received lots of engagement and positive feedback over that time. It provided a lovely sense of community and lots of encouragement. I'd like to continue his efforts.

    So, here's the deal:

You choose how much time you want to spend meditating each day, and what sort of meditation you're going to practice. But you commit to practicing every day for the month of June, and maybe check in on here with others who are doing the same. The idea is to have some group support/accountability, to help you stick to daily practice all month long.

If it goes well, then we rinse and repeat for the month of July. I'll make a new post for that when the time comes.

Post a comment below if you'd like to take part. And if you'd like an accountability partner to really help see you through your daily practice, post a comment below that says "accountability partner needed". Then wait for someone else to reply to your comment, and say "I'll be your partner". You can help keep each other in check throughout the month.

For those who use Insight Timer, there is a group for this called Meditation Month. Feel free to join up and find some extra accountability there.

For those who use it, there is also a discord server for this : https://discord.gg/meditationmind

Good luck folks. Hope this helps some of you start a meditation habit and others get back into one.

TLDR: Encouragement and support for people trying to make daily meditation stick!

NOTE: I like to encourage everyone who wants to take part and who leaves a comment below by wishing them luck and other little things in response. But I don't reply to people who have asked for an accountability partner in their comment because I don't want them to get a little "new message" icon and get hopeful only to find it's me saying "good luck!", and also because I think people scanning comments to see if anyone needs a partner might more easily look past those that already have a reply, even if the reply is just from me and isn't actually an offer to be a partner. Just wanted to let those folks who don't get a reply from me know that it's nothing personal! I wish you luck too, and am pleased you're taking part! :)

NOTE 2: Since starting these monthly challenges, the Insight Timer group has grown to 1000+ members, and the Discord even more than that! So join in and help make meditation a regular part of your life!

When starting off meditation, is is natural to get thoughts which think about how much time is left in the procedure?

Does taking breaks from meditation help?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:48 AM PDT

I've been practicing very consistently, sometimes twice a day. I've also picked up a lot of 'theory' in practice, understanding various ways to go about dealing with thoughts etc. However, I've recently had trouble staying still and just present because I keep giving myself advice to counter my moods (I try to think my way out of it)

Should I take a day or two off my practice and just go back to simpler routines?

    Getting to know your body

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:01 AM PDT

Meditation is a way to look deeply.

Do you know that leg that keeps moving, those fingers that keep moving. It means that you still want to run away from something. Be aware of the movements and it will stop.

Your body is playing hide and seek and with awareness it´s game over. Awareness wins.

I do not say that it is wrong to move, but it will definitely tell you something.

And here is some information about your eyeballs. If your eyeballs move, this means that you´re thinking or about to start thinking. So if you dont want to be thinking, try to keep your eyeballs still.

A good practice to become aware of yourself is by taking some rest / to stop for a moment.

In this telegram channel you will get a daily reminder to rest for a moment.

Whenever I notice tension in my body, why does acknowledging it make it worse?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:48 AM PDT

I am not new to meditation but I recently took it up again. I am suffering from tinnitus that is made 100X worse when I am anxious. Last Saturday I noticed I was so anxious that my head was hurting and my heart racing. Tinnitus was blaring ofc.

I settled down to calm down and meditate a bit. The problem was that the more I became aware of how tense I was, the tenser I became. I could not shake it. I finally calmed down by the usual observing and not interacting with my thoughts, but it was not easy at all. My head cleared, my heart rate went down from 95bpm to 75, and Tinnitus was very low (I wanted to cry).

As per the title: Whenever I notice tension in my body, why does acknowledging it make it worse? Or am I doing this the wrong way?

Meditation and journaling go hand in hand.

    Posted: 30 May 2021 05:15 PM PDT

I find that journaling in a gratitude journal prior to meditating creates a whole new experience. Journaling about what I'm grateful for during the day releases the negative thoughts because you can't think negative and positive at the same time. Journaling puts me into a feel good state which makes meditation more beneficial. I feel centered and at peace afterwards. It's still beneficial doing either thing by itself, but the combination is unbeatable.

    Whole Body Relaxation Music

Music is more important in the development of people and is necessary for the rest, especially children. Startups can drop small bumps. As a parent or teacher, it helps us overcome the challenges that a child develops. A child who listens to soothing music should be used to control his emotions and anger.

Is there a type of meditation I should to combat OCD?

Can meditation help me with my internal conflicts and struggles?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 12:53 PM PDT

    21M, big city

So I used to meditate pretty frequently, my therapist says I'm decent at it and that I should do it more.

I've been facing some internal conflicts in my life which are preventing me from growing, and I wonder if mindfulness can assist with my issues, or at the very least, becoming aware and being able to dissolve a lot of the inner junk.

Here are my two main inner conflicts:

Social anxiety/pursuing women: I want to be more social and learn how to talk to people more easily, but there's this inner conflict of anxiety that causes me to freeze up. I've been trying to take mini steps. I have this internal conflict, where I want to get out there and start talking to women, but at the same time, I have this paralyzing fear of rejection.

Substance abuse: I know I need to stop smoking weed, but I still want to do it, and still continue to do it. But ultimately I understand that its bad and I need to do more productive things with my life

I get that these issues very well might go hand in hand, with weed causing anxiety and all. I really want to overcome these internal conflicts. I know some people are probably just gonna say, "just do it", but I have anxiety disorder and I wonder if meditation can ease any of my fears just so slightly, or at least help me get to a point where I am more willing to face them.

    About pain.

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:26 AM PDT

Lately i started to understand how important pain is. Physically, psychologically and mentally.

Lets focus on the physical pain since it's easier to understand.

If we use our body wrongly, pain will arise. Sitting in a wrong position for too long, will cause pain to your back.

This is the body's way to notify you that something's wrong with the specific area. Taking a painkiller and keep sitting like that will only make matters worse in the future.

Listening to pain can actually save u from the worst. The painkiller is taken cuz of our fear of getting uncomfortable. It will only take away the pain for a while. But not the wound. There's no healing this way.

Sitting in a way you re not used to doesn't feel right. But it does not mean it isn't. Quite the opposite.

The problem is that it creates another kind of unpleasantness. And in order to avoid this unpleasantness, we swallow the pill to just make the pain even worse and get more and more pills in the future as the pain grows, just cuz we did not want to get uncomfortable.

We insist on doing the things that hurt the body so we wont feel the unpleasantness of not doing it.

Now switch that to emotional/psychological/mental pain and listen.

    Thank you for reading 😊

A phrase that kept popping up repeatedly during meditation today: "it is what it is and I will not try and change or influence anything".

    Posted: 30 May 2021 12:47 PM PDT

I've been feeling a little anxious and low today and this happened due to my reaction on something someone did or said. While meditating this phrase in the title kept propping in and I started repeating it in my head and suddenly everything felt calmer and I felt like there was a space opening up in my head. Which felt strange and scary. I find it ironic that my brain/soul or subconscious or whatever wanted me to hear that since usually I'm someone who believes that change is important and how important it is for me to be a good influence and someone that creates positive change.

I don't know what I intend to say with this post but I just wanted to share with you beautiful people on here. Perhaps you have some insight that could help :)

I posted this on the taoism sub too but I thought it might also make sense here

What was your reason for getting into meditation?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:25 PM PDT

I started over 30 years ago and began because of martial arts. Then, after an injury I had to get into the more philosophical part of martial arts. Eventually I became a Buddhist and a minister.
