Even doing 20 mins of yoga is better than doing nothing.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2021 09:59 PM PDT

I have depression, there are days when I can't get out of bed even if I need to. I'd skip exercise for 2-3 days and then do a ton of it on the fourth day. I realised if I do yoga for one hour, I wouldn't have the energy to do anything else around the house. But if I do just for 15-20 mins I still have energy to do stuff around the house and leave some free time for myself feeling like I've conquered the world. Weight loss is not really the goal for me, being more fit and flexible is the goal.

schools of yoga being too focused around an individual

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:19 PM PDT

    hi folks,

i recently discovered a yoga teacher from india and began practicing his guided meditations online. they were really powerful for me so i decided to go to a 4 day weekend to learn basic yoga through his foundation. again, i found the yoga itself and the philosophies shared to be extremely powerful but what i struggled with was how much of the messaging was about him as an individual. at the end of the camp, there was a ceremony where we all had to offer a flower at a picture of him and i found it strange to reconcile this with some of the more collectivist lessons about oneness that were taught throughout the program. has anyone else struggled with this in there yoga/meditation schools/camps/organizations? am i just overthinking it?

What should I do when I need to take a break during yoga class?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 08:01 PM PDT

I am returning to practicing yoga after some time away from it and I have joined a new studio. These classes are much more intense than what I was used to taking at my old studio. There are times when I am light headed and need to sit and rest for a few minutes before I can rejoin the practice. I am wondering what is the best way to sit when I am taking these rests as to not disturb the rest of the class? Should I do a particular pose? Or just sit cross cross and wait to feel better? It usually takes me about 5 minutes and I just don't want to disrupt anyone else's practice.

    Neck shortening in certain poses

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:36 PM PDT

Whenever I hug my knees to my chest the back of my head comes closer to my shoulders. It's as if when I straighten/lengthen my entire spine the back of my neck folds into a V shape and sends my chin away from the chest. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what can I do to counteract this?

Males doing yoga in public spaces

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:43 PM PDT

Guys, what do you think about males doing yoga in public spaces like parks? Since in the west it is considered "female stuff", i've got a feeling like it would be somehow inappropriate and socially unacceptable... Especially in yoga pants or something. Idk; sometimes I feel it seems strange and one would have some courage to do yoga in park alone. On the other hand; exercising outside is so cool; I realised I feel much more refreshed and happy, being able to exercise longer, to breathe easier (since i got sinus issues) and so on. It feels soo good 📷. But still; Idk if I'm annoying someone or doing sth which is not neccessarily socialy acceptable... Always want to respect public people's right to use their public spaces. I know it looks much more natural when women do it. What to do you think?

    Advice on pulled hip?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:49 AM PDT

A little background because it might be pertinent: I'm a 24yr old who used to weight 350lbs (childhood obesity so basically a lifetime of being morbidly obese). I got down to about 250lbs in my last two years of college which is great but I've never really felt a "change" in how I feel (even though I look very different).

I started doing yoga about 3 years ago (off and on) and I felt good but never felt a real change from when I was 100lbs heavier until I started trying to stretch my hips. They are LOCKED up, and I realized from years of poor posture and sitting on my spine, I've shortened my torso/hips (at least that's how it looks when I sit down). I have long legs and long arms (I'm 6'2 standing), but when I sit down my torso makes me look like I'm the same height as my 5'10 friends.

In trying to unlock my hips, I was doing downward dog one night and really wanted to try and get my heels to the floor. I ended up feeling a sharpish "pain" on my right hip and knew something was wrong instantly. I felt a tingling every couple of minutes from the base of my right foot all the way up my right but to my head and it was hard to walk after. Once I finally got rested, the right side of my body was fine for the most part but I had clearly over stretched or possibly torn something (I'm guessing my tight hip or psoas)

That was about a month and a half ago and I thought it would have healed on its own but I still feel some effects from it now. Now, it feels like my right hip is "unlocked"/ unhinged and my left hip/side still feels very tight. However when I stand for too long or put pressure on my right hip, the burning sensation comes back. Other than that, sitting upright is fine, I can finally breathe all the way into my diaphragm for the first time and I actually feel it, when I do do yoga, it can start off tight/kinda shaky but then after a few seconds feels great.

I even started lifting weights againt (practicing low weight and form over everything) and haven't had any problems with pain in my hip. Squats actually felt fairly good but deadlift caused a slight flare up on the last reps.

Any advice on how to heal my right hip? And how I can get both hips back in alignment so I'm not leaning on one side or the other?

    Thank you

Can anyone suggest yoga workouts that doesn’t stretch the pelvic floor too much

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:39 AM PDT

I want to be able to do some yoga even during my periods without stretching my pelvic floor or my thighs or my lower back because it all adds to the pain.

Previously when I would try to start doing yoga, I would always stop once my periods started and I wouldn't have the motivation to pick it back up after wards. Hence I don't want to stop this time and I want to stay committed.

Any suggestions would be great. Video links would be very helpful.

has he mass commercialisation of Yoga ruined its soul?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 07:59 AM PDT

Because of the mass commercialisation of the myth that is called Yoga, the Truth about Yoga has lost its real meaning. Yoga is a science and its origins are older than religions!

What is the meaning of yoga for you?

    Looking for some advise post-injury...

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 12:28 AM PDT

Hi! I am recovering from a spinal injury. I suffered a compression fracture and have some herniated discs. My consultant has asked me to do a lot of physiotherapy, which I am doing at the moment.

We are working on strengthening my core and legs to support my back and working at releasing tightness in my neck and shoulders. She has advised me to start practicing some yoga at home if I can, but she has asked that I refrain from any excersises where I am putting my bodyweight down through my arms (downward dog, press ups, chaturanga etc) as it would be putting weight straight into where I am injured and we need to work towards that kind of exercise slowly.

I have been looking at videos and apps but I'm finding the routines all involve these kind of exercises. Is it ok to just leave these poses out? I am a novice, so I'm unsure about whether or not it is important for the flow to go though entire routines or if it is ok to pick and choose.

Has anyone any recommendations for videos or types of yoga that leave these poses out?

Thank you in advance for your replies.
