Ashtanga yoga: Advice on soreness from daily Ashtanga |
Advice on soreness from daily Ashtanga Posted: 23 Jul 2021 12:35 PM PDT I've been working on my yoga practice off and on for a decade. Around 2 years ago I found a studio where I really connected with the teachers and starting attending an ashtanga class once a week (which was the most frequently it was offered). During last year when everything was shut down I continued my yoga practice but rotated through different types of yoga to keep my self interested and motivated. For various reasons that I won't go into, my practice dropped off sharply around March of this year. About two months ago I realized that my entire self care routine had all but vanished and decided to take a break from smoking weed, drinking, and to return to my Ashtanga practice daily; even if that meant I could only do 5 minutes a day. My usual resources are the Primary Series Ashtanga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and I've also been studying form and philosophy from "Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and Philosophy" by Gregor Maehle. For the last 5-6 weeks I've done the half primary series 6 days a week. I live in a beach town so I go to the beach everyday and practice at sunrise. Afterwards I usually flow for an hour with various props i.e. contact staff, hula hoop, rope dart, poi. My practice this last month and a half feels like a rebirth. My emotional health, strength, flexibility, clarity of mind, confidence, and awareness of my body is at an all time high. It seems like each week I unlock a new depth of understanding of breath, form, alignment, philosophy, etc. Needless to say, I'm extremely excited by all of this! So now, the problem. I find I'm incredibly sore throughout the day. The closest thing I can relate it to is when I play hockey very intensely for a couple of hours and just feel so exhausted afterwards that I can barely stand in the shower before I go to bed and pass out. I'm not in pain, the soreness actually feels good. But I've started to have trouble getting to sleep at night (without sleepy tea or melatonin) from feeling so sore. I've also started waking up about half way through my sleep cycle and then I having trouble returning to sleep from feeling so sore. Is this normal? Will my body just adapt to the change? Am I fatiguing myself because I'm practicing in the humidity and heat of Florida summer mornings? Am I missing out on some rejuvenating effects from the last half of the primary series postures? I'm a relatively thin guy, so am I just feeling the effects of building up my body in a way I never have before? I want to grow into eventually practicing the full primary series 6 days a week if possible, but I'm worried that I'm pushing myself too hard. I would love to hear advice based on experience from those that have practiced Ashtanga for long-ish periods of time. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Chiropractor advices stopping yoga Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:23 AM PDT I decided to see a chiropractor for the first time since i noticed my posture is not good anymore. My back is a bit too arched and my belly is poached forward, i have anterior pelvic tilt. So the chiro checked my posture, took pictures and showed me the angles and said indeed my body is leaning forwards and if i want a good posture i should stop practicing yoga because of deep backbends and she adds that everyone should stop it in fact because its not good for anyones spine, we are not designed to bend backwards she says. This has been keeping me busy since then, is it really the case, are we actually harming our spine with backbends? Have you been to a chiro before and heard this before? Curious about your take.
