    Dairy for a yogi?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 03:10 PM PDT

I'm cross-posting my question from the Hinduism subreddit to get an opinion of the yoga community.

Please pardon me my ignorance, but as far as I know, the cow is considered to be a holy animal in Hinduism. And therefore yogis are also expected to treat cows with respect?

    But, according to Wikipedia:

Sattvic milk must be obtained from an animal that has a spacious outdoor environment, an abundance of pasture to feed on, water to drink, is treated with love and care, and is not pregnant. The milk may only be collected once the mother's calf has its share.

Treating cows poorly is considered to be the greatest sin, according to the scriptures.

Yet, I've recently watched a documentary, that sheds light on the modern dairy industry.

In most parts of the world, the calves get taken away from their mothers by force. Many are killed soon after being born (mainly males, since they can't produce milk). The cows rarely (if ever) go outside, and live inside a tiny cage for the most of their lives. They have to be constantly pregnant and give birth, in order to keep producing milk (therefore they're inseminated by force). Dairy cows only live for about 4 years, whereas cows in nature can live up to 20 years. Doesn't it go against the very principle of ahimsa?

And even in India, the situation doesn't seem to be much better...

I was horrified that I was supporting an industry that mistreats the holiest animal so badly for so long.

Does this mean that the scriptures prohibit consumption of the modern dairy products, because of poor treatment of the cows? Is it best for me to avoid consuming dairy completely in the modern day and age?

Again, please pardon my ignorance, and let me know if I'm missing anything...

How difficult is it to find a studio that teaches all of the traditional 8 limbs of yoga? (central Florida)

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 09:42 AM PDT

I'm new to yoga, so please bear with me. I'm really interested in finding a studio (or ashram) that practices all 8 limbs of traditional yoga from the patanjali sutras. Most of the places I've found focus primarily on asanas, and most are heavily westernized versions that leave out a lot of the philosophical context of the practices.

I'd really like to find a place that teaches the whole picture- not just a heavy emphasis on the asanas, but a well-rounded approach that covers pranayama breathing, meditation, asanas, as well as the spiritual/philosophical contexts of the practices. I've researched a bit and Sivananda yoga is close to my description, but there are no locations in my area (central Florida).

Are there other "brands" of yoga I should be looking for that would match my description, or would an ashram be a better place to inquire regarding practice & study?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Downward dog pose became easier as a session progressed.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 02:28 PM PDT

As a class recently, we did a downward dog early in the class, and then the same pose a few times later in the class. I couldn't hold the pose very long in the early part of the class, but I was able to maintain the pose later in the class.

Is that a result of certain muscles or joints being warmed up? If so, which muscles and joints are likely to be the cause? Hips, shoulders?

Should I try yoga for COVID recovery? Does anyone have experience?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 11:04 AM PDT

So I'm in my last days of isolation, I hope, and I'd like to get my body back on track. I used to run, but I wanted to quit for a while now, since it's quite hard on my joints (no injuries luckily). In the past week I lost a lot of stamina and some muscle, and I was wondering if anyone here has experience with yoga and COVID recovery.

Is yoga a good place to start? Are there any pitfalls or other things I should look out for? Positive experiences? What can I expect?

I think this is my time to try. I've been curious for two years now and my local sports centre offers a different types of yoga classes, but I'm just worried I can't keep up. I'm also curious about the theory, spirituality and history behind it. I'm doing a bachelors in religious studies, how fitting. :)

Still on my quest for structuring

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Hello other yogis, I posted on this thread a week ago and had some good responses from others.

My question is to the teachers on here and the serious practitioners, how do you structure your classes and practices?

Do you have set days of yin yoga vs days where you are moving in more dynamic flows? I'd like to know how you proceed to structure your goals?

    Not loving vinyasa flows

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 07:09 PM PDT

Hi all! I wanted to post to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

I really love yoga, taking classes, practicing at home, etc. But I always grimace when I have to get through sets of 3x sun salutations before going into more advanced moves. For example, I love Ashtanga yoga, but I really don't enjoy the several sun salutations before hand. I also am drawn towards yin yoga because it is slower.

Are there any practices that have less emphasis on sun salutations?

Trying to find an old book about Yoga I once read...

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:34 PM PDT

Years ago I downloaded a PDF of some old book, like late 1800's or early 1900s era. It was about Yoga, and written by some Indian guy... supposedly it was one of the first English language books on the subject.

Searching, I though maybe it was "Science of Breath" but it's not, that book covers mostly breathing. The book I remember covered all sorts of things like:

    1) Chewing your food approximately 20 times for better digestions 2) Dealing with sexual urges by doing meditation and breathing to draw the energy from your pelvis upward to your head 3) Washing your nostrils

I can't find it or figure out what book it was... Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Any advice for increasing wrist and finger flexibility?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 02:35 PM PDT

I'm hoping to get some help in opening up my wrists and finger joints. Specifically my right wrist and right fingers can't bend as much as my left. I can do all the regular poses like downward dog, planks, and such without any pain. They bend fine at a 90° angle facing outwards, but poses like wheel pose or any pose where my wrists have to face inward, I can't use my right wrist.

I've noticed that besides the obvious that my right wrist won't bend, my fingers on that hand don't bend as far back as my left hand. Going into table top wrist stretch is basically my worst nightmare and I usually skip this pose...

I'd love to get better wrist mobility though, so that I can start working on new poses and just to make sure my wrists are okay. Any insight would be appreciated.

    Mantra mats are gone :(

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:44 PM PDT

Hey fellow yogis! So I slip on every single mat I've ever tried, yes, even liforme.. mantra was the only one I didn't slip on. Their website is now like Homs furnishings and stuff (?) but I need a mat that's a twin to the mantra deluxe mat, it's 6mm and super grippy, any ideas?

Has anyone bought/used brentwood home crystal cove bolsters/cushions ? They are filled with buckwheat and made with organic cotton. Would like an honest review !

I've seen a lot of other bolster recommendations but was interested in this set. I'm a beginner and don't have much experience with different bolsters.

Stretches for relieving stiffness in joints and thighs during lotus or pigeon pose

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 10:29 AM PDT

Any recommendations on stretches or which areas to foam-roll? I'm not experiencing pain. When I bend my knee to get to lotus pose the whole right leg becomes stiff. I don't force it. Not really sure if it started recently because I don't remember this stiffness.

I am currently around 84 kgs,170-172 cm, as measured myself using things available at home.

I am always dealing with digestive issues, and trying to have a healthy diet.

Can you people suggest some good yoga poses and correct way to perform them to increase some height and to loose weight also, I have started with the Bhujangaasan( Cobra Strech ) and want to add a good habit of yoga, just to be healthy again.

And which I can perform in my room.

Relationship between pelvic floor/core strength and the Splits?!

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:10 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

How are you? I was practising front splits for years and was always a few inches off the floor at best. However when I started doing planks, after about 6 weeks my splits suddenly came down to the floor, even with squared hips. When I stopped doing the planks, after a few months I can no longer get down to the floor. I assume it's because the plank strengthened my pelvic floor/core and my body felt safe enough to open through the hips. Is this correct?

Would different core exercises other than plank have the same effect? as I can't do planks anymore

Is there any good yoga breathing exercise app out there?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

I love the Down Dog app a lot for my practices at home. However, the one downside to Down Dog is that it doesn't really go into breathing exercises.

Do you happen to know of any such app? My breathing in yoga is the one thing I'd love to gain more experience in.

    Hope you can help!
