Unpopular Opinion: American Yoga Culture Sucks

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I've been teaching yoga "full time" for four years now. I've completed the "highest level" of training that Yoga Alliance recognizes and have worked for 20+ studios on the east and west coast. I really love sharing this practice with people and have tried so hard to support myself by teaching yoga.

Of all those yoga studios, I have come across 2 studio owners who were kind human beings who treated me respectfully. Amidst humorously low pay, working for yoga studios I've also come across owners who break independent contractor laws (did you know that if you are an IC you can't be asked to clean the studio?), bait and switch tactics regarding pay, bullying, verbal abuse, carelessness, the list goes on.

What I'm realizing is that most yoga studios are owned by white women who's partner/family make enough money that they don't *need* to work. The sense of entitlement that permeates this group of people seeps into the studios and culture at large and generates a cycle of toxic bullshit. If you are young, white, fit, and female you might not see this at first, but I promise it's there.

I could go a million directions with this post, but lets go the direction of yoga instructor treatment. Most yoga teachers are paid very little, get no benefits, and race around town all week from one class to the next. They may be expected to attend studio meetings for no pay or to complete tasks (like cleaning etc.) that they legally can't be asked to do (unless they are actually hired as an employee.)

Have you ever asked a studio how they compensate your favorite teachers? It's worth looking into when you are deciding which studios to support.

P.S. There are a handful of genuine, kind, and inclusive yoga spaces I've come across and I am so grateful for them.

I'm visibly the biggest one in my yoga class (F 210 lbs) and I'm struggling with self-consciousness.

I look around and see all of these skinny to average-sized people and the even skinner teacher. I feel so uncomfortable seeing a whale in the mirror. Anything I can do to get myself out of that headspace? I just started hot yoga classes last week, so the added anxiety of beginning something new is there too.

    Nausea from yin pose

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 03:42 PM PDT

Hello I was stretching the front of ankles/ top of feet in a seated yin pose and felt the sensation of nausea after some minutes. Does anyone have an idea why this would be ? Thank you

I'm trying to create balance and make my upper back as even as possible with flexibility and muscle strength. Now it's uneven and I've slowly started to find ways to relieve the tension and gain strength. Ideas are welcomed!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:37 AM PDT

My spine between my shoulder blades is not straight. I don't have scoliosis that I've been born with, but some injury has probably caused it. Also I've done martial arts +10 years and that has definitely not helped. I'm right handed so in combat stance that hand and the shoulder blade is pulled a bit back and left hand is more in the front (boxing stance).

I'm concentrating on doing stretching and different asanas equally on both sides. Obviously right side usually moves better, but I don't stretch it further than the left. With strength training I've noticed that pushups are maybe the best thing to do for me and close second is hanging and (slow) pull-ups on a bar.

If anyone has had similar imbalance at the shoulder blade area I would be very happy to hear how you are trying to fix it!

I was wondering what's the most convenient yoga poses to do when you're at work and when there's actually down time? I can't really get on the floor but can do standing poses. My lower back is killing me from doing this job.

    Just a thought…

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Wasn't sure where else to post this. But in my morning practice, when I do Mountain Pose I get a really unique feeling. I feel the intense placement of myself in the universe. It's like everything just stops and all of a sudden I am hyper aware of what I am and where I am. Does anyone else feel like this? I'm newer to yoga been truly practicing everyday for about 4 months now. I've already felt some benefits.

Just incase anyone didn't know this (I only found out this morning) they sell Alo Yoga clothing at Sportchek. The Repose bra has been sold out for some time but I was able to pick one up from the clearance section of Sportchek for nearly half price.

    Seeking Modifications to Marichyasana

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 02:48 PM PDT

I've been doing yoga for about three years now, mostly using apps and websites as there isn't a yoga studio in my area. One pose that's really been challenging me recently is Marichyasana. Since I'm plus-sized, I can't bring my knee close enough to my chest to wrap my arm around it properly. I also have issues with the forward bend portion of the pose because my stomach gets in the way. Despite my best efforts I'm not getting the stretch I want from this pose. Is there a modification I could do or another similar pose that could provide the same stretch?

three-legged dog -> step forward -> warrior one?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:15 PM PDT

I am a beginner and I have difficulty with this transition. I find there is not enough room for my leg (shank specifically) to step forward so I always end up with a very small lunge. I need to step forward again after my upper body rises up to achieve a proper warrior one pose. I watched some youtube videos but I am still confused. I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some instructions. Thank you!

How do you incorporate yoga into your other practices?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 09:10 PM PDT

I've had several yoga teachers over the years (moved around a lot) and in that time I've always been fascinated by the other forms of exercise/martial arts they've mastered as well. My current teacher used to do body building and teaches Krav Maga when he is not on the yoga mat. I had another teacher who was a professional badminton player in the late 90s and ran pickle ball tournaments from his house. Another taught dance at a college and was a movement coach for actors.

I myself enjoy Kendo and fencing as a recreational sport and have a group I go rock climbing with regularly. I have seen my teachers example the value of yoga in their other disciplines and feel it has aided me in my other endeavors as well.

What other physical activities do you practice as well and how, if at all, has yoga benefited them?

How much is too much and how should structure be?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:37 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am a beginning yogi and at the same time, an avid Nak Muay (Thai Boxer).

I have stopped all weight lifting minus pull-ups in an attempt to structure my weeks around yoga and thai boxing, as I am bored lifting weights and yoga gives me all the stimulation and resistance I need.

My question/problem is, how should I structure? How much is too much? Is it bad to do challenging full body flows every other day? Should I find a routine that hits what I want (crow, dolphin, lots of chatarangas) and just stick with that?

I'd like the advice of some serious yogis that juggle multiple things. Please feel free to message me!!!!
