Meditation: Being at home all day is messing up my sleep habits. Trying to fall asleep isn't easy when I haven't been as active. But I've found this really cool exercise that works for me. I listen to Celtic music and imagine I'm flying over a forest, looking down on all the trees, rivers, hills! Give it a try!

As adults, we forget to use our imagination to help us overcome problems. Having kids really helps me understand this on a daily basis!

I’m up to nearly day 500 straight days of meditation. However, over the last few weeks I’ve found that my mind keeps wondering a lot during meditation. How can I fix this? Should I start doing a more guided meditation instead?

A small step for a Newbie

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:45 AM PDT

I just wanted to share my recent experiences, partly because I have no one else to talk to on this and partly in case it helps the others doing what I did.

I've being trying really hard on this for a while. I've been sitting everyday, I've been using the muse to optimise my practice and I've been devouring every source I can to make sure I find the right practice for me. It has been ok and I have noticed that I spend less time on my phone when I'm with ours and am a bit more solid.

Yesterday how ever I decided to forget all that and follow the advice on just watching and stop trying. I just followed my breaths by counting them. It was, by many of my previous criteria, not a good meditation. My mind was really busy and I kept losing focus all of the time. However, afterwards I just laughed and laughed at the absurdity of what I have been doing. I have been focusing so hard on "doing this well" that I've been turning my back on all the joy that could have been coming my way.

I also had a picture of my boy in my head making his silly made up noises that annoy me, and realised that they are part of him, and I could just be happy for that. There was also a crying feeling that also started, but was not quite ready.

Nothing earth shattering, no feelings of bliss or transcendence it wasn't even particularly enjoyable, but I think I've taken a small step down a new road.

    Thanks for your patience

7 day streak for the first time ever

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:20 AM PDT

I have been meditating on and off for 3 years now, and yesterday was day 7 of my first ever 7 day streak.

Usually, I'm afraid and unwilling to meditate due to mood changes but I made a small commitment to myself!

    Breathhold meditation?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:05 AM PDT

So I did this thing where I just take a couple of deep breaths and then hold my breath for as long as possible, 1:00 minute, 1:30, sometimes 2:00. And then I just watch my thougths.

I have the feeling that while I am holding my breath, my thoughts are so crystal clear and I seem to be able to let them go more easily because I am focused on extending my breathhold.

Just wanted to ask: Is this a thing? Are there any papers / explanations on this? Has anybody else here tried this out?

    Meditation time period barriers?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 06:39 PM PDT

Does anyone else meditate, and once they maintain their meditative state for a certain period of time, they feel like they can no longer meditate? Will you be able to meditate for longer periods of time as you meditate more and more? Should you just break past these time period barriers?

It was in the center of the visual and around it it had u shaped things connected going infinitely also rainbow colored with walls. It was beautiful and I could only see it faded for about 4 seconds with my eyes closed when I had to focus on my breathing again.can anyone explain to me why it happend? would anyone like to join me to meditate?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 03:05 PM PDT

So during this time of social distancing, I thought it could be a nice idea to find people to meditate with. We could schedule our mediations at the same time, or arrange a videocall through hangouts, for example. It would be great to get a group of people together for some conscious breathing and to send some light out into the world.

Or if anyone knows of any already existing online meditation groups, could you point me in their direction?

    🙏

    Best time to be aware

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 12:34 AM PDT

As we go through this patch of our lives, being aware of what we touch in our surrounding is very helpful and a good meditation practice. I try to be aware to always use my non-dominant hand to open door handles, lift buttons and such. I try to be aware of it and I am reminded of present and reduce the chances of contaminated hand touching my face at the same time.

Anyone else tear up when they meditate?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I'm not actually crying or anything. But my eyes water so much that tears actually run down my face when I meditate. Just curious if that happens with anyone else

    Big insight during meditation!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:48 PM PDT

Note: This may only be a personal insight, but I want to share with you all anyways, at least as an inspiration to those who suffer from anxiety and obsessive thinking. (Also this may be disorganized, but I just typed stream-of-consciousness style here and wanted to leave it that way for now)

It all dawned on me in an instant: the most "supreme" form of meditation (or deepest mindfulness) is when you let go of all control with your conscious mind. I noticed how I try to "rush" my breath as I do with other tasks to get them done faster (eg reading, dishes, walking somewhere, etc.) but I was doing this with the breath; as if I could rush my breath to arrive somewhere. It's obviously an absurd notion, as the breath does its own thing and there is now destination other than the present. And when you let go of control of your inner states, your thoughts, then it moves outward. You stop wanting to control the external world too; be it you coworkers, the weather, traffic, etc. Because you know that your mind wants to control, to grab and manipulate things that cannot be grabbed and moved by your will...

So let go my friends, let go of your inner then outer conditions and arrive at the present. Be with it, "join the dance" as Alan Watts says.

Is there a guided meditation builder app?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 11:29 PM PDT

I have a sequence of 10 things I do as part of my meditation and I do it separately now. If there is an app to build such meditations together with an audio telling us what is next (which we define), it will be great. Yes, we can make our own recording, but we will miss out on the background music and more. It will be professional if its a tool. I found an app called getmeditable, but its only for iphone. It will be great to find something for android. Thoughts, or alternative ideas?

I got into meditation with every intentions of opening my third eye. I'm not saying that my third eye opened because it definitely didn't, at least I think so, but I was wondering if you guys know why I feel an adrenaline like feeling on my forehead and heart when I meditate.

    Mindfulness at 3 Months

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 06:54 AM PDT

Part-way through last year, I finally came out of a lengthy drug addiction after resolving to change my life. After the initial recovery, one of the changes I made to my life was that I began to learn Mindfulness from the book "Mindfulness" by Mark Williams and Danny Penman, which I followed for the duration of its one-month course, and have since continued for the last two months.

Even though I considered myself to be a person who didn't care for the opinions of others and had high-esteem, mindful awareness showed me that this was not the case. As the course slowly built up my ability to easily enter a non-judgmental awareness of my internal state, I realized that I was actually besieged by thoughts of self-loathing that I would previously have given a significant amount of energy to, but which now simply came and went without receiving any of my attention at all.

The difference to my life has been striking - from a very dismal mental place of constant exhaustion I've been feeling exceptionally "stable". My mood has been incredibly stable, needless to say, I have not touched narcotics or alcohol, and I've had an abundance of "mental space" that let me rebuild my life, my career and even produce artwork to decorate my new place with.

To me, the most striking change is that I seem to be the only person amongst my family and friends mentally unaffected by the coronavirus outbreak - the existential worries that seem to be plaguing everyone else simply don't take root in my thinking, much like all the other worries I would have once chewed over simply because they appeared in my mind.

The hardest part for me was accepting that other people are often not ready to do the same, even if they ask you how you changed your own life. Watching people give huge amounts of energy to stray negative thoughts (often to the point of it making them physically ill) is hard when you feel you have a solution. This sense of wanting to help other people find the same solution appeared in my awareness during a number of meditations, and I was able to put it aside and let it go entirely in good time.
