Yoga has helped me focus solely on myself

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:25 PM PDT

I have noticed that the more I do yoga the more I am only focusing on myself. I often had been told in yoga to focus on my own breath and movement rather than anyone else in the room. Don't compare yourself to others progression and so forth. I have had to try to work on this more than ever now that I am practicing at home. My roommates sometimes practice with me and will often talk, laugh, stop, text, and what not during our practice but I am working on not letting it get to my own practice. Since the start of quarantine, my roommates and I have been watching movies series, and both my roommates had never seen the movies before. While we watch they are constantly on their phone or laptop and then would be confused when big things would happen. I started to get upset and was annoyed watching movies with them. Today when we were watching a movie the same thing happened, but I stopped and asked myself why it matters. I should not concern myself with whether or not they are enjoying or focused on the movie. Rather put my energy and focus into my own enjoyment of the movie. I am so grateful for the mental growth i have gained through yoga!

How to protect the knee during crescent lunge?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:22 PM PDT

I'm in beginner II in my down dog app and the instructor does crescent lunge with the back knee on the ground with the front knee bent. I am having trouble comfortably keeping my back knee on the ground. I try so hard to keep the hip over the knee but it still feels like my kneecap is about to pop no matter where I shift it. Should I put knee pads on for this pose? I'd love to take a class to check my form but that's obviously not an option right now. Any advice is welcomed. TIA!!

    Thoughts on Suede mats?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

Hope it's ok to post here rather than the mat megathread, as hopefully more people will see/respond! I've searched the sub and haven't seen much discussion about this type of mat.

I am looking at buying a mat and a friend recommended a vegan suede one which she uses for yoga and home workouts (link at the bottom). I have read mixed reviews, most people say it's very slippery if you are not sweating but gets more grippy as you start to sweat!

I was wondering if anyone here has experience using this kind of mat, and what your thoughts are. My hands do get a bit sweaty but it's not excessive.

I'm also considering the lulu lemon reversible mat.

Free weekly online Chair Yoga Sessions (great for beginners).

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:11 AM PDT

    Hello!

I hope it is okay to post this on here. My lovely Mum has just qualified as a 'Chair Yoga' instructor. As we are in Lockdown at the moment (UK), she is unable to run her usual classes. During this time she wanted to do something nice and run free online ones for everyone should they want to join in.

It is a fantastic introduction to yoga, or reintroduction for anyone who is returning to it. It is very low impact and all done from a chair. It is also a good class for older adults and those with limited mobilty. I have attended a few of her sessions myself and although it is not too physically demanding, it does work each muscle and joint beautifully. You finish the session feeling ever so relaxed and as though you have had a massage.

Should you be interested, I have linked her website below. She has her live session from yesterday on there as well as a couple of prerecorded sessions.

    A path to Ashtanga

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:40 AM PDT

I've been doing yoga on my own at home for about 2 years now. I've tried doing Ashtanga for beginners on Youtube and found it too advanced for my current abilities. Nonetheless I kind of like it and would like to set it as my goal, I want to get there. My problem is that I don't really know how to get there, is there a kind of yoga that I need to practice in order to get closer to being advanced enough to go with that course that I watched on Youtube. Or I'd rather go on with Ashtanga way with simplified postures?

    Neck pain after headstand

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:56 AM PDT

I'm having neck pain after doing some headstands. It used to happen to me when I went to class years ago, but not as bad as today (this is my first headstand in a long time because I stopped practicing for lack of time)

Does anyone know what exercises I can do to ease my pain? Im thinking this pain is because I'm not resting my head the right way, so If anyone could remind me the right spot of the head that goes on the floor, I would be very grateful!

Thank you and have a beautiful day.
