Sexual Assault in the Yoga YTTC

    Posted: 23 May 2020 06:26 AM PDT

Just over a year ago, i completed my 200HR YTTC in India. The course itself and what i gained from it was incredible but just towards the end, one of the Yoga teachers sexually assaulted me. It broke me and still a year later, i am not the same person. Since then, it has been found out that the yoga teacher has done the same to other girls on the course. I know this happens a lot out there but i want to ask if this has happened to others, and what they have done about it?

Edit - i should add, that i think im now strong enough to talk about it publicly. This shouldn't be happening and this person should not be teaching yoga

    Yoga for Toning

    Posted: 23 May 2020 07:09 PM PDT

Thanks to quarantine I wouldn't have thought of yoga at all. So I started last April and it never crossed my mind to stop. I stick to the monthly calendar of Yoga with Adriene. 2 months in and I've already noticed how it benefits my mental health.

I do it alongside bodyweight workout since I'm looking into toning my body but I'm thinking maybe there are other types of yoga out there that can actually substitute the workout I am doing at the moment. The list I saw in this sub can be pretty overwhelming so can you guys help me which type of yoga should I practice more if I wish to work on toning my body?

    Thanks!

I can finally touch my toes when I bend forward!

    Posted: 23 May 2020 12:15 AM PDT

I know this isn't something a lot of people have trouble with, but I've NEVER been able to touch my toes when bending forward before. Even as a kid, I'd get this horrible pain at the back of my legs down to my big toe when I tried. I started doing yoga last month, and it surprised me today when I was finally able to do it!

I'm so happy I tried yoga. I'm still very much a beginner, but this little victory really gave me the motivation to keep going!

    Down Dog - the app

    Posted: 23 May 2020 05:48 AM PDT

In one of the online yoga communities I participate in, someone recommended the app Down Dog as a tool to practice alone. In case that came from here, THANK YOU. I was skeptical but just did my first practice with it and was impressed with how tailorable it is. I'd definitely recommend it for those of you who are new and looking for something that will work at the pace you desire. I'm not new to yoga but picked all the very beginner options and still learned stuff. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it and looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

Hello, overweight male here looking to get into yoga

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

Being overweight, I feeling a little discouraged. I am not flexible at all and I also had a lower back injury 4 years back. The past 2 weeks I have completely changed my diet and want to start lifting weights so I can better my health. I also want to do yoga as an added benefit and to help me with stress. Will I be okay starting yoga classes being overnight or should I maybe wait until I lose some first? Also, any advice for a bigger person like me? I want to attend 2-3 sessions a week.

Hip tightness in happy baby pose?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT

I've had an on-again-off-again relationship with yoga for several years and amidst the pandemic have resumed a daily routine via yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. I'm naturally very flexible in most areas except this particular area. It's a painful tightness in my hip creases in happy baby pose, front and center on each side level where my femurs bend to meet my iliac crests. It's not like the burning stretch sensation of a good stretch but more so this tightness and pain I haven't come across before. Are these my hip flexors? Are there other poses I can do to work on my flexibility here?

Advanced Poses in Down Dog App?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 07:35 PM PDT

I'm looking for an at‐home program to supplement my studio classes and am testing out both the Down Dog app and Yoga Glo. While I've really taken a liking to Down Dog, I - as the user- can't see upcoming classes and I'd love to know if there will be options for inversions, arm/handstands, etc in the more advanced settings? Or would I need to stick with a more progression focused platform like Yoga Glo to integrate these into my home practice?

Getting started...advice for a big (not fat) guy.

    Posted: 23 May 2020 06:02 PM PDT

Ex military, my first exposure to yoga was in grad school, when I was working out twice a day and thought I was the shit. Girls across the hall said, "Hey, wanna try out yoga"...I was like, "I will destroy yoga...you ladies should hit the gym and stop screwing around". I was stupid and realized that in about 1 minute...lol. When I was about 15% body fat I weighed 275lbs. Well, fast forward about eight years and I work in IT...had a kid...up to about 325lb now and working on cardio with strength training limited to core only at the moment. What is the best route for me? I see people on here all the time doing poses and I am just in awe of the flexibility and strength. Older and wiser me realizes I want to focus on cardio, flexibility and strength in that order. Probably going to do this solo...so apps and vids wil be my primary methods. This is a life goal of mine and I just would like some guidance in taking the first steps.

    When to practice challenge poses?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 09:43 AM PDT

    Hi!!

So I dug around the FAQ and older posts but couldn't find anything so I apologize ahead of time if this has already been asked!

I'm still pretty new to yoga (only been at it for about 5 months), but have been practicing about 5-7 days a week. I suffer from migraines but yoga has helped TREMENDOUSLY. Since COVID, I've been going through YouTube videos, but have been wanting to actively learn yoga and not just do it. So I'm creating my own at home sequences so not only can I learn the names of the poses and their purposes but also take my own time with them and practice my breathing. This also gives me the opportunity to learn some of the intermediate challenging poses I want to start practicing!

ALL THAT TO SAY: how do you begin incorporating challenge pose practice into your routine? Do you make that part of your sequence and work on it then for a bit before moving on with the rest of your sequence? Or do you spend some time after working on that pose? For instance I want to learn crow pose but not sure if I need to add that to my sequence and fall on my face then or do it after, lol!

Thank you for your help!! I've been enjoying lurking here! Everyone is so encouraging and seeing all the posts has been really motivating!

    Tripod vs traditional headstand

    Posted: 23 May 2020 05:11 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm a newbie trying to learn how to do a traditional headstand. I know the typical advice is to learn traditional then tripod but I can already lift my knees to half headstand in tripod whereas I can't even get my feet off the ground in traditional most of the time. In fact I feel MORE weight in my head when I try the traditional. Also I have super tight hamstrings so I cannot get my hips over my shoulders with a straight back. If you guys have any advice it would be appreciated. THANKS.

Why does “Legs up the wall” work ?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I've been doing 15-20 mins of "legs up the wall" for the last few days. I have had a bad left hip with a constant dull pain. But for an hour or so after I do this asana that pain vanishes and it feels incredibly good. I'm curious now - why does this simple exercise work so well ? Any videos explaining the mechanics of this asana in a way I can understand what's happening internally ?

    Yoga programs while in quarantine?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 10:20 AM PDT

I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a yoga video program. I have been doing yoga on and off for a few years and my husband is very new to yoga. It definitely helps the my anxiety which has been on the rise due to the pandemic. I have not been able to find a weekly program that builds on itself for yoga.

I would like a program that's easy but challenging and that we can do daily or something along those lines while in quarantine. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Also all of your poses that you guys are posting are super inspiring.
