    Beefy Yogic Brothers

[COMP] I recently learned that you’re supposed to push your shoulder blades apart and rotate your upper arms so that your elbows are pointing more towards the ground. This is my first post here since joining this sub a couple months ago. Any comments/suggestions are welcome-thanks!

[COMP] Kakasana(crow) vs bakasana(crane). Straightening the arms in crane is difficult, you must be in sync with your serratus anterior(your wings) in order to lift your body, practice l-sits and more l-sits. Enjoy the practice and remember to breathe!

Wow, I can't believe it. I've been wanting to take this challenge for a while now, and tonight I finally did it. It's the best thing ever, just had to put it out there.

    I stretched my neck today

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT

After practicing Yoga with Adriene for 22 out of 30 days, I sat up straight and let the weight of my head drop both left and right under its own weight for what was a glorious eternity. My shoulders dropped, head over heart, and a deep breath later, with eyes calmly closed, and an exhale that relaxed my jaw, the top of my head dropped and I took as many deep breaths as I could, then using my core to lift my head, from base to crown. It was probably the slowest hula-hoop I've ever done with my neck. (M/23)

"Elongate Your Spine"-- What exactly does this mean?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:12 PM PDT

Been doing Yoga for a month using Down Dog. A frequent instruction is to "elongate your spine" (such as in extended side angle) Does anyone have any tips of what this means or how to do it? Maybe its in my head, but I don't quite get how to accomplish this.

    Just started practicing...

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:07 PM PDT

I'm new to yoga, and have only checked out a few online "follow along" videos on here and YouTube. I'd like to really learn all about yoga, both the poses and the philosophy that goes along with it.

What books on yoga would be best for a beginner to read to understand the philosophical ideas as well as the practical application yoga has for the rest of our our day-to-day lives?

Stayed in Boat Pose properly for the first time today.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:50 AM PDT

I've taken to Yoga more seriously this year to help build strength after having health issues all of 2019. I have finally commited to doing at least 1/2 an hour a week (hopefully more!) full body workouts, and today I finally lifted into Boat pose properly and held it the full time with the proper leg extension and everything! This may seem like a small victory to some, but after having pneumonia through my 21st birthday and barley being able to stand the time it takes to shower, I feel like I've come a long way in a year! Thank you for reading and encouraging each other :)

How do I do Malasana without upper back pain? Without causing spinal misalignment?

I keep accidentally curving my upper back.

i can’t straighten my legs completely when bending and it’s making learning yoga difficult. please help!

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:13 PM PDT

i'm only 21 and generally fit/nimble, but for as long as i can remember, even as a child, i've found it impossible to keep my legs straight when bending - trying to touch my toes for example. i can barely get to my knees with my fingers without having to bend my knees because of the huge amount of tension behind my knees. i'm not sure if it's my hamstrings or what.

please help me to fix this! it's quite a burden.

    [COMP] Slanted headstand help

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:55 PM PDT

    http://imgur.com/gallery/iqe7vsJ

I'm stoked because after about 6 weeks of practicing my headstand I can get about 3-5s air time consistently! But it always seems like I'm slanting during my inversions and idk what to do about it 😓

Also I'm trying to do pike into straight leg lifts (both legs) and I usually feel like I'm not strong enough to keep my legs straight so they're bent at the knees, is that something I should be worried about?

This is also my first post with media and I'm not too sure how to upload it so I hope this works 😅

Can I learn yoga solely for the physical benefits?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:49 PM PDT

(Sorry if this post is doesn't fit the rules, I checked the FAQ and didn't find quite what I needed.)

I've been getting into a more fit lifestyle recently, and yoga was something I considered learning. However, I've got a pretty sturdy belief system that doesn't really jive with the spiritual side of yoga. Is it viable to learn yoga for the physical benefits without incorporating the spiritual aspect? If so, what form of yoga would I want to learn?

I really don't have a good enough idea of what yoga's basics are all about to tell how integral it is, or if I'm being ignorant by assuming it can be disregarded. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Anyone delved into kundalini yoga and have some answers/experiences to share?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:41 PM PDT

I'm feeling very confused about kundalini yoga.

I find myself really enjoying the practice and feeling the benefits after, but have an uncomfortable feeling about the whole thing which is more and more strengthened the more I read about Yogi Bhajan.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, here is a starting point: https://gurumag.com/master-of-deceit-how-yogi-bhajan-used-kundalini-yoga-for-money-sex-and-power/

I would love to find a teacher whose yoga isn't based entirely on the teachings of yogi Bhajan, because I feel like we can't separate yoga from his influence. But every teacher I'm finding online, either on YouTube or zoom classes, obviously bases their teaching on Yogi Bhajan's teachings, as he brought kundalini to the West.

I feel like there's something so deep and beneficial here and I don't want to just walk away from it because it is confusing and scary. Has anyone been through a similar thing and come out with some rational answers? How can we separate what is kundalini yoga and what is the ego of a perpetrator of emotional and sexual abuse?

Any rational and honest answers would be greatly appreciated.

Kindness Yoga called out: Weakened by coronavirus, 9 studios close after Instagram campaign exposes rift over race | A hashtag led to hundreds of cancellations just as the company was readying to reopen. But some teachers wonder how closing down helps Denver’s yoga community make progress.

Have you tried Zoom yoga classes?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:11 PM PDT

What are your thoughts if you've taken Zoom yoga or meditation classes? I personally love it as long as the teacher's great. I love being able to practice in the middle of my work day without leaving home. Bonus: when my friend joins the class to and we get to connect and "practice" together!

    Anything similar to DDP yoga?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:28 AM PDT

I'm a uni student so I really can't afford the membership that DDP yoga costs, and I was wondering if anyone knows of anything similar that I can use as a replacement? Thank you

How to stop my wrists hurting doing stuff like downward dog?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:43 PM PDT

So when I do downward dog or cat-cow or anything that puts major weight on the wrists it hurts a lot. I've tried putting the pressure on the thumb pad and finger tips but it doesn't really help.

I placed an order with Yoga Outlet and got a free trial. Just wondering if it's worth my time. I usually follow Yoga with Tim, for reference.
