[UNPOPULAR OPINION] Masks should be mandatory in yoga classes.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I originally posted this in r/unpopularopinions because this a subject that has caused quite a bit of division within my yoga community. I'm posting here because the moderators over at r/unpopularopinions decided that since the subject matter was about masks it was technically a popular opinion (regardless of whether your for or against it), suggesting that I share my post to another subreddit.

    So here I go...

I'm a yoga instructor. A couple weeks ago, my state was given the okay to reopen gyms and fitness studios. In all the places that I work at, mask wearing is only required when clients are checking into their classes at the front desk, after that mask wearing is considered "optional." In every single class that I taught, I was the only person wearing a mask as everyone else took off their masks the moment they laid out their mats.

I've been staying informed about COVID-19 since the beginning of the lockdown, and I'm wary of indoor spaces since they pose a high risk of infection. To me, it makes sense to make mask wearing mandatory for group classes because I have regular clients who are immune-compromised. Even with social distancing measures applied, a part of me worries that they could still get sick if someone isn't careful.

A lot of my concerns were dismissed by my peers and higher-ups saying that social distancing measures were enough and that I'm being paranoid. My peers are even saying that mask wearing is dangerous because it causes hypoxia since we're breathing in CO2. They've also said that mask wearing is a violation to their right to breathe freely. I really wish that I was making this up :/

I've been exercising with a mask on for nearly a month and have not experienced any adverse effects other than temporary discomfort and the occasional feeling of being overheated. Otherwise, I feel perfectly safe.

I really feel that this is an issue that is just as applicable to gyms as much as it is with yoga studios. Gym owners, gym instructors, or gym goers feel free to share your thoughts.

So what do you think? Should gyms and yoga studios mandate mask wearing in their group classes? Or am I just being overly cautious?

I finally got a "textbook" down dog

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:54 PM PDT

Been practicing for years now but started consistently practicing in April. I took a video then and one today to compare my progress and my down dog looks amazing. Still room for improvement (heels) but it feels good and I'm super jazzed that I feel so good in such a foundational pose.

Cat is destroying my mat. It’s a cheap one from TJ Maxx so if anyone has any suggestions for better mats or keeping their cat off, please let me know. At least he’s cute.

What's the general structure of your daily practice?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:38 PM PDT

I wanted to get an idea about how different folks structure their practices, especially now that we're all cooped up.

I usually start with a tiny moment to arrive on my mat, warm up my shoulders, do some sun salutations, get into core work, standing poses, and then focus on either heart opening or my hips, and then wind things down.

Help with gift idea for Yoga With Adriene fan - phrase for embroidery piece

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:50 AM PDT

    Hi all!

My roommate is a big Yoga With Adriene fan and I want to make her a little embroidery piece with a reference to Adriene to hang up in the yoga room. I know my roommate finds a lot of comfort and good feelings from her videos, and I want to help capture that.

Are there any phrases that Adriene says regularly? I know she's kind of a quirky not-super-serious yoga instructor so I imagine she might have one or two unique things she says. If there isn't a particular phrase specific to her, then is there some yoga phrase that she uses a lot?

If not, I'll just make something that says a phrase like "eat, sleep, yoga with Adriene" or "in this house we love yoga with Adriene" or "keep calm and do yoga with Adriene."

Thanks very much everyone and have a lovely day.

    Yoga for Digestive Health?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:18 PM PDT

My mom has been having digestive health issues for a while, she's in her late 50s and is not super fit, but she regularly does jazzercise when her stomach is feeling okay. I've been hoping to get her more into yoga and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a practice that she could do when her stomach is hurting?

Push myself too much to finally end the tyranny. However, that won't help as it is best to take it slow right and with control and care. I want to get my stomach to touch my knees when I bend all the way down as my arms rest under my feet. It is the pose where you are and L and then fold the L to be one line

    Using back of Jade mat

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:33 PM PDT

Soooo... I did outdoor yoga once, with my Jade Harmony, and I think I ruined it. Either that, or having it out most of the time during quarantine dried it out. Anyway, it's pretty slippery besides in the spots where my hands and feet often are, which have been shedding for a while.

This is probably a dumb question but, has anyone ever just used the back of the mat? As much as I want a new mat, I feel guilty spending the money when I have another side of a perfectly good mat, lol.

Who spaces out their downward dog so that the feet are spread as wide as a common yoga mat?

I want to get into this but I'm struggling with finding my motivation.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:02 PM PDT

In March I worked out for the entire month. I lost 2 kilos in just that month and I was really proud of myself. But as a treat, I fell into a bad habit of binging snacks and candy and kinda lost my spirit. I tried getting back into running at the beginning of summer, but only ever got to one run because then the weather decided to piss on me and I gave up. Last year I was super into running and motivated by the fact that I needed to lose weight for an upcoming surgery. It all went well, but since my surgery is over, I've been struggling to find my motivation every time I set out to working out.

I fell into the worst moment of my life at the beginning of this year. I won't go into details, but a traumatic experience caused me to quit drinking for 4 months. I never intended to quit entirely, more get out of my addiction to regain control, and I have! Since quitting, I rarely drink anymore and I don't even have the urge to get drunk at all. I find it easy to just say no now, which is good!

Ever since my shit experience, I've been turning my life around. One of the things that helped me the most was meditation. It's something I've used every evening since that dreadful night before falling asleep and while looking at techniques, Buddhism, origins ect I eventually found yoga and decided I wanted to try it out. It's been the one workout routine that will make me sweat like all others but also have me feeling really good afterwards, both physically and mentally especially. I'm not into all the spiritual stuff in yoga, but the whole energy thing, breathing correctly and opening your heart is definitely something I feel.

So, I've decided that I want to do a 30 days yoga challenge. Today was day 2. I'm tired of being a blob. I'm not obese, but I'm definitely "skinny fat" and I hate looking at my body in the mirror. I wear a lot of baggy clothes to hide the areas where I'm chubby. I just want to keep my chin up, stick to a diet and actually do this. However, I'm so nervous about what kind of goals I should set for myself so I don't end up at a dead end and start binge eating candy every day again. I'm asking for help to some pointers and what I should expect to gain from this experience.

    If it helps, I'm a trans guy(ftm), 29 years, 170cm and 75kg.

Advice needed for doing yoga for IBS patients

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:46 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I am a guy 5 ft 7, 80 kgs and fat at the moment. I want to do yoga but I have IBS and don't feel completely relieved even after sitting on the ceramic throne a couple of times.

I would like to know if it is safe to start doing yoga when I am not feeling relieved? Or what can I do to empty my bowels early? Would really appreciate your advice.

    Deep stretches for shoulders

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:27 AM PDT

Hi! Does anyone know some stretches for shoulder flexibility? I've been doing a lot of puppy poses but I can't seem to press my chest to the ground, it feels like I'm stuck there. Neither can I stack my shoulders on top of my wrist in wheel pose, I really can't breathe and my arms feel like they're going to crumble (I always try my best to straighten them) :/ I can't seem to lift my arm up to 180, and my goal is to be able to extend beyond that. Also to do a king pigeon pose and a full lord of the dance pose. Thank you in advanced!

    Gaiam mat trestment

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:02 PM PDT

I recently bought a gaiam mat and it is kind of slippery. I am not sure what material it is exactly. It is a standard basic mat material, so rubber I assume. I have heard about treating mats with a salt rub to reduce slippage. If I do so, would it damage this mat?

Smart TV, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga Classes

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:52 PM PDT

I have a smart TV that I've been using to join classes on Amazon Prime. I enjoy more intermediate to somewhat advanced classes that are a daily mix (5-7 days/week) of Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Yin yoga. I like when the instructor sets the mix so I don't mind trying new styles but those are my favorites. I've been practicing for >2 years now mostly at a studio but because of the thing I've been practicing at home. I have not found a consistent source of classes through the TV (the TV has more than Amazon Prime and I don't mind paying but I don't want ads during class) that I can follow. Is anyone else interested in that mix of yoga through that medium and if so has anyone found a source/solution and is willing to share their wisdom?

    Thank You

    How are your feet?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:02 PM PDT

For 6+ months, the bottoms of my feet have been SUPER thick, dry and prone to very painful cracking. I assumed it was athlete's foot from my studio until a Teladoc derm shot me down.

Now that I'm really thinking about it, I've had this issue for probably as long as I've been doing yoga (about 19 months now).

I'm starting to think that the thickness on the pads of my feet is from constantly being pressed and rubbed against my mat. Even though I use a towel (I usually do hot yoga), I'm wondering if just the friction from constantly anchoring with the four points of my feet is toughening my skin.

The other day a friend's kid told me my feet "looked rough" lol. Is this a common thing for people who regularly practice?

How do you deep clean your mats?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:04 AM PDT

I know it's kind of a strange question but how do you give you mats a good deep clean? Or do you just buy a new one? Normally I wouldn't need to worry about it, as no one goes into my corner but my dog got sick and decided that was where it needed to happened. I sprayed it with a hose for like an hour and I just dont feel like it's clean enough.
