Is it normal to cry during meditation?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Ok I feel like it's not normal but I just started meditating and the first time I did it I actually cried. The second time I meditated I could still feel tears building up but didn't really cry. Any answers to this?

    My Daily Mantra

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 07:25 AM PDT

    You belong

Every day you exist is a miracle

Breathing air and experiencing love and pain and sorrow and contentment is winning the existential lottery

As we have no one in either direction of the universe for millions of miles

    You are enough

    You are more than enough.

    A good analogy to meditation

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:43 AM PDT

Imagine you see somebody holding a hot glowing coal in his hand and he´s burning it and screaming in pain, suffering. You would think: This is ridiculous, how stupid is he. He could just let go of the coal and the pain would eventually disappear. The coal symbolises all our negative thoughts, feelings and urges that make us suffer but most people dont realize, that they are the ones holding on to it. And when you let it fall to the ground, it might still be there, but you´re not connected, identified with it, and accept its being or see your illusion disappear.

7-day group meditation as a group

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:51 AM PDT

Hello! I posted last week and we had 14 people sign up with interest. Since then, I found a teacher from a local meditation studio willing to lead it, and we could room for a few more people to join. I finished my first Vipassana course last year, but haven't been super consistent since, and thought this would be a fun experiment.

It will start on August 23 and look something like this:

    - Daily 5-10 minute guided sessions (over video - recorded, not live)
    - Share daily reflections with others in group (group reflection prompts).
    - Video call at end of 7 days, led by experience meditation instructor

If you're interested, fill out this form.

I know you're all probably doing this, but DAILY meditation even if for a minute or two is what really makes the difference..

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:04 AM PDT

Meditation is something that's always helped me in my life.

No matter what else has been going on, by meditating even every few days (ideally every day), I get much more clarity.

I think we're often overwhelmed by our senses, things going on around us, even just having constant music on in the background can overwhelm us and never gives us time to just 'be'.

But I also have seen that it's not always the time you spend meditating but the habit of doing it that makes the biggest difference.

Just KNOWING that you're going to do it every day actually has an effect, even if you're only meditating for a couple of minutes. But it is sometimes hard to stick to it and if you miss one day that can quickly turn into 2, 3 or 10 days...

But the benefits are pretty interesting. More clarity, less stress. And being able to reduce stress has a huge impact on almost everything else in your body/mind!

Just my thought of the day, if you don't already meditate I would highly encourage it! Even if you just see it as 'pointless' because you're just essentially sitting there doing 'nothing' for a period of time, but it really does have some benefits!

Hope this helps! I'll try and reply to everyone here but if you have any questions or thoughts about this, I'm happy to chat! Just send me a message.

    Daily meditation not working

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:33 PM PDT

I have been meditating every day for three months straight now, at first it went quite well but now I feel as though I'm just sitting there and breathing for 15 minutes (I do 15 minutes with an alarm every time) whilst having 1000 random thoughts come in and out of my head. I haven't felt a lot of improvement in my day to day life, I did in the beginning but now I just don't feel better each day as I meditate. Should I be meditating for longer? Perhaps the way I am meditating is wrong? How do I stop having so many thoughts? I'm so lost and need help, thank you.

    Feeling physically small/large during meditation

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 08:34 PM PDT

Frequently when I meditate (eyes closed), or when I'm sending gratitude, I will feel either really large or really small, or both at the same time. This might sound weird. Usually, I have my hands clasped in front of me and that is where the sensation starts.

I find it fascinating because it occurs even before I get very deep into my meditation. I've also experienced this feeling on psychedelic trips with my eyes closed. Anyone else?? It's almost like being simultaneously super big and small, which I feel is true. Pretty trippy!

    Does Location Matter?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 01:08 AM PDT

So, I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm curious. I have been meditating for 4 days as of today (yay me!) and it works! I feel calmer, better breathing techniques, the whole deal.

The thing is, yesterday I decided to start meditating in my room on a yogamat. But I keep fidgeting, squirming, moving, get itchy and whatever not. Prior to this I meditated in my backyard, and had no problems at all. I could easily do 20 minutes or more. The reason why I stopped is because I have room mates who sometimes pass me, and while this doesn't really bother me, I figured being alone would work better.

Am I twitchy because I moved to my room? Or is this normal?

Only desire what's inside your control

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:34 PM PDT

"Love only the event which comes upon us, and which is linked to us by Destiny." (Book VII, 57)

In his book Meditations, Marcus continuously repeats to himself that most things in life are outside of his control. He realized that life is unpredictable. In 2000 years, nothing has changed about that.

Shit happens to you all the time. Instead of resenting it or desiring a different life; work with what you have. We all know this piece of advice.

"If life gives you lemons, make lemonade," so the overused platitude goes. Marcus takes it one step further. Instead of making the best of what happens to you, LOVE it.

He knew that most of the things we desire are outside of our control. Look at what you desire. More money? A social media following? A better job? A new car?

Or maybe that your partner will always love you? That you always keep your friends?

He desired none of the above. He only desired what's inside his control or what happened to him. He had faith in something bigger than him. What happened to him happened for a reason.

Most things in life that happen are not up to you, my friend. And Marcus realized that like no one else.

I love reading about Stoicism and meditations. Marcus Aurelius and Seneca all the way.
Will keep sharing what I learn here regularly. Hope to provide some good value.

PS: I'm building a Slack community of meditators for my meditation & habit-building app. Trying to do something different with this one. Would anyone care to join and help with some feedback?

I’m incredibly anxious and meditation is not working.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:09 AM PDT

I'm already a person with pretty bad anxiety and I use meditation to help with that, along with therapy and medication. Right now I'm in a stressful transitional phase of my life, and meditation for me isn't really working, even with longer sessions. I would appreciate if anyone could send me some positive energy or prayers, or better yet advice for how to get through this. Thanks.

Focusing on thoughts and emotions as they arise.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:17 AM PDT

Hey guys! Just a quick question for more experienced meditators. Do you consider it valid meditation when you just sit and pay attention to the mind and the physical sensation of emotions in the body? For example: while paying attention to the body and breath I catch myself thinking about a situation that needs fixing. I can clearly observe the thought and the complementary feeling of anxiety in my stomach. Instead of going back to the breath, I focus on this experience of being anxious more intensely and sort of ride the wave until the feeling disappears. I almost completely forget about my breathing, but I am still present in the moment with my body and my emotions. I'm unsure whether I should continue what I'm doing or if I should try to get my focus back to the breath. What are the pros and cons? My biggest takeaway from meditation so far has been increased emotional awareness, but I don't want to miss out on potentially better focus.

    What are your thoughts?

So This happened a few months ago, I was Meditating outside in the sun. I heard that sun is divine energy so I wanted to try it out. And While I was meditating I was in a Beautiful Forest and a Beam Of light popped up. It got bigger and bigger till it exploded and I got freaked out. Has this happened to you?

Namo Amitofo . Namo Ah-me-toe-fo . Translates to Namo Infinite Light Buddha . If the blessings are there, and the conditions are right, sit in meditation tonight and follow the sound. Yr mind will wander, use the Buddha's name to gather it back.

Let go of the anxiety of letting go

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 04:45 AM PDT

Had a very nice 16-minute session just now, full of ease and calm. But it hasn't always been this way.

I've been meditating on and off for about 4 years, as I've always experienced depressive and anxious feelings and thoughts and wanted to become more mindful, hoping it would make me happier when external events didn't. I struggled hard to be 'good' at it, like with everything else I'd done. I had the subconscious belief that if I wasn't working hard enough to suffer, then it wasn't worth doing/I wasn't doing enough. Case in point, I attended a 10-day Vipassana silent retreat and suffered greatly throughout, for the goal of not suffering! (I did enjoy the most calm and peace for about a couple months afterward, but it wore off after I let my practice lapse.)

I know now that I am anxious of letting go. Of being vulnerable, honest, letting my guard down, etc. I was always striving for the 'ideal' meditation and getting caught up on all the natural imperfections of the practice. Once I finally accepted those imperfections as being natural and therefore, good, I settled into a state of ease far more quickly than I had attained in the past.

Importantly, once you do attain that state of ease, don't subconsciously hold onto it. Accept that it will come and go, like all things. The goal of meditation isn't to attain ease in itself, but that in learning to let go, the ease will fill the space that is created.

is there only one certain song you can only do meditation too.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:23 PM PDT

Hi everybody, I don't know if i had post this or not. If i have please forgive me. When I am doing meditation there is only certain kind of music i can meditate too. And that's Native American Flute/sounds of nature and Dolphin dreams. I have tried other's and it does not help. But when I'm focusing mediation and listing to Native American Flute/sounds of nature it takes me straight the the place I always went to when I was a kid. And across the creek there is an Indian playing the flute and there is an Indian women dancing around me like she is trying to heal me. Does anybody have this problem? Don't get me wrong I'm just wondering. Thank you.
