Had an amazing session outside at dusk yesterday, as a big storm was coming in

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 05:29 AM PDT

It was in my garden, on a hill with a huge view. The air was hot and sultry, and inside the house was stifling. We could see a storm was brewing, and thunder rumbled in the background, with flashes of sheet lightening as the clouds gathered.

I positioned myself to face the view, and watched the sky as it darkened, the clouds lit up by the reflection of the sun, streaked with gold against iron grey.

I could feel the warm wind against my skin, and felt so at one, so excited by the view and the weather, so right.

Eventually, of course, after half an hour, big, fat, warm drops of rain started to splash off my skin, and I retreated into the house for a corpse pose by the open door.

    It was amazing!

I created a playlist that really helps me stay focused during my yoga sessions. It has a super calm ambient vibe with subtle piano on top. I thought some people might like it and it can help them to stay focused. Feel free to give it a listen. Hope you like it!

    Gomukhasana legs... preparatory asanas?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:58 PM PDT

Hello everybody! I'm a 37-year-old with lots of hard miles on my limbs and joints due to some Army years and my main hobby, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I've recently decided to commit to a daily yoga practice and I'm starting by trying Yoga With Adriene's 45-minute stretching routine on a daily basis. Today was day three of the routine and I'm delighted by the stretches as well as the integration of Pranayama (I've been doing Ujjayi breathing with internalized mantra meditation for some time now), but there is one pose that confounds me... Gomukhasana. Starting from a table position I move one knee behind the other but as I sit back two things happen: my knees begin to separate and my body twists in the direction of the rear leg, to the point that any attempt to sit completely down has me either on that leg or past it. Are there any preparatory asanas that can get me closer to even doing a modified Gomukhasana? What would a good modified version of that pose even look like? I'm not at all worried about the arms at the moment, I'm just trying to sort the legs.

Thank you so much for your time, and have an awesome day!

    Downward facing dog pointers needed

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:42 PM PDT

I'm in need of some pointers for my downward dog! I feel like my spine can never be perfectly straight, no matter how much I push my chest toward my thighs and no matter how much I put a bend in my knee. Is this possibly an anatomy thing? Do I need to lengthen the distance? And any other criticisms on my form?

Funny that downward facing dog is a pose I struggle with even after years of practice.

What to do when beginner yoga is still too hard?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:26 AM PDT

I've tried beginners yoga a couple times, different videos each time and everytime they are too hard for me. I am what I like to call "body stupid" in that I really dont understand my body, muscles and how to stretch what.

Any video recommendations for something EXTEMELY easy to start with?

[COMP] crow looks unusual because I can’t lean my knee against my arm (too painful) can you help me correct my form?

You must purge yourself before finding faults in others.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:07 AM PDT

When you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake. This is the way to take judgment and to turn it into improvement. Do not look at others' bodies with envy or with superiority. All people are born with different constitutions. Never compare with others. Each one's capacities are a function of his or her internal strength. Know your capacities and continually improve upon them. - B.K.S. Iyengar

    Yoga practice and hip arthritis

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:50 AM PDT

Hi all. I am a 21 year old man and have just been diagnosed with arthritis in my right hip! Along with a partially torn labrum and some joint damage. I am healthy, in good shape, and have a lean , athletic build. I have been practicing yoga daily since the new year, though I took 6 weeks off with the hopes that my hip would heal ( it didn't).

So, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for my practice and treatment options. (Yes I will talk to my Ortho about treatment; yes I do go to PT - just wanted to see if any fellow Yogi's had any tips). Thanks!

Pain in knee coupled with butt and lower back pain (feeling really jammed in the lower part of lower back)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:48 AM PDT

Hi, any advice would be sincerely appreciated. Tried researching but not much result.

My right knee has been feeling sensitive /tingling and I feel that the pain is linked to the pain in my right butt and my lower back being so tight. For example when I'm standing and trying to tilt towards the right side, I'd feel pain in my knee and tingling sensation in my butt.

I noticed this also when I'm doing yoga poses like: twisted prayer high lunge, sometimes even in low lunge.

For background, my butt has been my biggest pain in the ass (pun intended) in yoga poses. Always felt like butt tightened too much and it hurts during poses like warrior three, standing split, twisted high and low lunge.

I can do headstand, crow and some arm balance poses, but not the poses above.

I tried stretches like figure four but doesn't work.

Any advice wwill be greatly appreciated 😭

I can't do forward folds and i want to do V-sits

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:13 AM PDT

My hamstring flexibility is pretty good right now, i can touch the ground with my palms with straight legs but i've still got ways to go before i can get the V-sit. The problem is that having my legs straight and going past a 90° angle(L-sit) just starts to really hurt my knees. I never used to have this issue about a year ago but then i took some time off(a few months) and when i came back i still kept my flexibility but started developing pain. i'm only 16 so i doubt its something like sciatica, had anybody else experienced something like this or got any ideas of how to fix this?

    Hinduism, gods, mantra and meanings.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 03:12 AM PDT

    Hello all,

My Heart vibrates when I hear the names and stories of Hindu gods. Same for singing mantra. But I have almost no knowledge about Hinduism, mantra, the gods, their stories and meanings. And it feels bad to sing mantra or have statues of gods in my house I know nothing about.

Where do I start to learn about Hinduism, gods, mantras, stories and explanations?

    Thanks so much.
