I started practicing yoga during the lockdown and now I finally can clasp my hands behind my back

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:11 AM PDT

It has always been a mystery to me how people do namaste behind their backs or grasp their fingers with one arm raised over a shoulder and the other one reaching to the other hand's fingers from below.

Even my mother, who is 48 years old, does stuff like this without any problems. I felt terribly inflexible and much older than I really am.

It seemed to me that the lockdown was a sign that it was time to finally deal with this. Let me share my experience and tell you what I've been doing to come to the result in the photo.

    1. I changed my diet

The key to success is raw starchless fruits, veggies, lots of water and no salt.

    What I've been eating:

    ● Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, arugula, collards

    ● Berries and other fresh fruits like strawberries, cherries, and oranges

    ● Nuts with healthy fats like almonds, walnuts and cashews

    ● Fish high in Omega 3 like salmon etc.

    1. I added a daily shoulder mobility routine.

I started doing yoga every morning after waking up and every night before going to bed as well as during my lunch break (30 minutes before having a meal).

For exercises I use these apps (but you can find something that works for your body):

Zenia yoga app https://get.zenia.app/0BrF/f2f98069 (detailed stats after practicing, great classes for beginners)

Nike Training Club:https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nike-training-club/id301521403 (lots of short workouts)

Alo Moves: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/alo-moves/id601617403 (good videos, but the app is buggy)

Before that, I had been watching youtube videos. This is my favorite one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywv4agkhHOU

    1. I started attending massage sessions (only a month ago, when the corona situation got better)

Massage helps to break up knots in muscles and tissues that restrict movement.

Hope it was useful! Feel free to share your tips in the comments :)

Are you still practicing live yoga on Zoom?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:23 AM PDT

It's been a while since teachers started teaching live classes on Zoom and it seems that for some it works great and some really don't like it. I am curious how people who started yoga recently and never went to a studio feel about virtual classes. And it's also interesting to know how teachers and experienced students feel about it now, as it kind of became the new norm..

I created a playlist that really helps me stay focused during my yoga sessions. It has a very calm ambient vibe with subtle piano on top. I thought some people might like it and it can help them to stay focused during their sessions. Feel free to give it a listen. Hope you like it!

Does anyone have a favorite “foundations” yoga?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 04:14 PM PDT

I do yoga everyday but the place I go to (well, been zooming due to COVID) only does the foundations on Monday's and I've realized this is my favorite practice, it's a very basic flow, no special poses, but it really loosens my hamstrings and my back and that is exactly what I need!

Hip and back pain after Yin

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 04:42 PM PDT

I just recently started adding Yin to my weekly yoga routine. I go to yin on Saturday, and then a gentle vinyasa class on Sunday. The past two weeks I've done this, I've had a lot of hip and lower back pain on Monday. The first time I did this, I was down for the rest of the week. Couldn't sit or stand comfortably for more than a few minutes, with pain shooting down the sides and tops of my legs. I had a similar issue this week, but to a much lesser extent. Does my body just not agree with yin, or am I doing something wrong? I have had back issues in the past, but have been going to gentle and basic vinyasa flow classes since December with no issues. It seems to be only yin that affects me this way.

    backside front leg Lizard Pose

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Not only lizard pose, but also the front leg in pigeon pose or merpaid pose. As soon as I try to get into the pose or put weight on that leg I feel/hear a loud THUD that originates from the back of my hip joint and goes all the way to the outer backside of the knee. It's often quite painful. When this happens in lizard pose my knee flaps to the side, and I can only get it back if I accept another painful thud. I can basically go into a deep lunge and move the front leg a bit to the outside and inside and get a soft thud every time.

It's not related to the hamstrings. I carefully tried feeling which muscle it is, but whichever I grab I can't stop this. Thus either it's a deep-laying muscles that's not easy to feel or something else. My guess is that it's right next to the outer hamstring, and somehow connected to the back of the hip joint. Whatever it is, it's not improved at all after months of training.

Any idea what this could be, and how to improve it?

    Anyone tried group outdoor yoga?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:50 PM PDT

Hello, Has anyone chosen to participate in socially distanced outdoor yoga? The yoga studio I attend is deciding to open up outdoors and I am debating wether or not it is safe to attend. I really want to but I want to also want to make a smart and safe decision. Thanks!

    Practice for reverse prayer pose?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT

My shoulders are really quite inflexible, and I struggle a lot with reverse prayer pose. When my palms are facing each other behind my back, I can only just make my fingertips meet – and even then, it feels rather strenuous.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest any good stretches which might help loosen up the relevant area of my shoulders a little?

Thank you very much - I'm looking forward to hearing your advice.

I’m trying to have better posture but I’m experiencing a hard transition phase. I’m new to yoga and it feels really good and like it’s helping, but then I feel pain in the red circles when trying to stand up straight in daily life. Help? More details in the comments.

    Online yogic lifestyle courses?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Hi all! A studio near me was going to hold an in person yogic lifestyle course - basic principals, mindfulness, etc. This was of course pre COVID and is now on hold.

Does anyone know of anything similar online? I am not looking for a YTT and really want to learn more about the spiritual practice vs physical. A class format is preferred over individual reading.

Just how do people sit cross legged?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I do a bit of yoga at home, guided by Youtube videos. It has done my body a lot of good, but one think I absolutely cannot do with any efficiency is routines that require crossed legs and a straight back. It feels SO unnatural and the tension I need to hold in my thighs is simply unsustainable. Am I doing something wrong or do people just torture themselves until their bodies adjust to this pose?
