Meditation: My workmate said he likes Friday afternoons better than Sunday afternoons

My workmate said he likes Friday afternoons better than Sunday afternoons

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:06 PM PDT

He said on Sunday he's dreading work, but on Friday he's excited about the weekend.

So sometimes he prefers working to not working because when working he's thinking about not working, and when he's not working he's thinking about working.

The mind is a funny thing.

Good morning everyone, I hope you all have a lovely day. Love you all!

Edit: Its night time now, and I hope you all had a good day, and you'll have another lovely day tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the day after that, because you deserve it. I love you.

"Practice meditation the same way farmers grow rice. They're in no hurry. They scatter the seed, plow, harrow, plant the seedlings, step by step, without skipping any of the steps. Then they wait for the plants to grow.

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 12:24 AM PDT

Even when they don't yet see the rice appearing, they're confident that the rice is sure to appear some day in the future. Once the rice appears, they're convinced that they're sure to reap results. They don't pull on the rice plants to make them come out with rice when they want it. Anyone who did that would end up with no results at all."

    Poor people meditation cushion?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:10 PM PDT

I'm a little broke right now, but meditation has really helped me. My butt hurting has been a bit of a hurdle to achieving enlightenment, however. Any suggestions on a meditation cushion that I can improv from stuff lying around the house?

In your honest opinion, how do you belive mediation helped you control your emotions?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 06:52 PM PDT

    Hi,

I don't want to be emotionless, but I'm sick of my emotions taking over my actions and decisions at times. I've gotten into some shit in the past due to me being weak and letting my emotions getting the best of me. I want to deal with my emotions internally in my head, and by the timeI externally need to react and deal with a situation, I want to react in a calm way. I want to be calmer and have more control over my feelings. I really want my feelings to be private. In addition to other things, will meditation help me? Looking forward to reading your opinions! Thanks a lot!

Become less aware when I’m with my girlfriend...

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:19 AM PDT

Before I met my girlfriend I used to be more aware of what I was going to say, how I was feeling, and I used to be able to control my reactions. It was something I used to do quite well and without too much effort.

Since the first day I met my girlfriend that skill of being aware and in "control" (using that term loosely) has decreased A LOT. I didn't know what it was but now i recognise it's that. It's been about two years now and I am only just realising this is what's happening. Does anyone have any tips?

My guess is that I should approach this as if I was learning to become more aware for the first time, check in periodically with breathing and body position but if anyone else has gone through this and knows what to do I'd be super happy for your advice!

    I love to breathe.

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 12:43 AM PDT

I was in meditation and just as I was about to end it, I put my arms up to stretch and realized that I simply love to breathe. Ended up stretching and meditating for 10 more minutes.

During meditation, it feels like the “dam is going to burst” and there’s a bunch of emotions I want to release. But on the subconscious level I can’t seem to release it. Can anyone relate?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 01:31 PM PDT

If I focus on my breathing for more than 2-3 mins, I feel like I'm gonna just start crying uncontrollably. And then it feels like I subconsciously block whatever emotion is there. Some parts of my body (jaw/hips) will tighten up and makes it difficult to cry

What activities should a meditation club include? Other than just practicing meditaion

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 06:22 PM PDT

I plan on starting a meditation club at my school and though I kinda already made this thread I got a lot of optimistic remarks but no actual suggestions so I figured if I worded the title like this it will elicit more suggestions.

Mediation is really confusing me, help

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 12:58 AM PDT

I honestly do not understand what I should be doing. Generally, I hear you should "focus on your breath, and observe your thoughts without judgement". What I don't understand is - which do I focus on??

I can't focus on my breath while focusing on observing my thoughts, and I can't focus on observing my thoughts while I'm focusing on my breath. So which do I focus on?

Before this I had been using guided mediations, which apparently led me to meditate in the wrong way. I feel dissociated with everyday reality, which is because I was "blocking my thoughts". Well, isn't focusing on your breath blocking you thoughts?? I get your supposed to return to your breath when carried away, but by doing that, you're just shutting off that stream of thought.

All this stuff just makes no sense to me and it's becoming quite frustrating. I'm beginning to feel more stressed than I did before mediation. So please, someone explain this stuff to me.

Sense of calmness and focus going downhill after two months of practice

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 12:09 AM PDT

I started meditating in early July this year. I had no prior experience and needed guidance so I subscribed to Headspace and started meditating. In time, I started to get into the so-called 'Zen mode' while meditating but for over two weeks now, I find myself chasing thoughts and unable to focus on my breath. The instructor says to gently bring the attention to the breath and I do so whenever I find myself chasing a thought but then the focus is so short and ephemeral that I find myself chasing the thought once again. There is no particular thought that has caught my attention in the past weeks but random thoughts pop up and I cannot seem to let go of them.

I seriously need some help in this one.

First Time Meditating for 20 Minutes

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:06 AM PDT

Recently I started practicing meditation for small amounts every day (roughly 5-10 minutes), and after a week or two I felt ready to up the ante and go for 20 minutes or more. I've been a little scared since my ADHD often pushes against my concentration, but I decided to set the timer today and commit to a 20 minute session, and I've never felt better. Usually after a short session of meditation I feel a little more aware, but after the 20 minute session I felt much more aware about what's going on around me and how my body reacts to it. It's definitely a new sensation and I'm glad that subreddits like this one exist, as I would've never jumped into meditation without proper guidance. I'm excited to see where my practice goes from here! Thanks to everyone who has helped others in their meditation journeys, because meditation is such a difficult practice to get into, but it's well worth the struggle. And to anyone who is hesitant to increase their session lengths, you should do it! It was one of the best experiences I've had, and having longer sessions really increases the enjoyability of meditation.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:54 PM PDT

Everything starts to seem NEW and BEAUTIFUL

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 06:52 AM PDT

    UPDATE

I have been doing deep intense meditation. But for last 3 days i feel like everything is NEW. Everything is fresh. The food i use to taste, started to taste amazing. Every second is like a new second.

My emotions are controlled. I use to assume everything but through meditation i am able to see everything as if its absolutely NEW to me. Just like a baby.

I thought I had found someone new. A refresher. Someone perfect, a true honest girl, speaks her mind, and shares the same ideas and hobbies. You serve things on a silver platter to anyone. you will be served coal back.. I recently started to go back to my faith.

Can I achieve the same "spiritual/reality shattering" experience people do on DMT/Phsycadelics through meditation without having to become a monk?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 05:21 PM PDT

TL;DR - I've read all sorts about meditation and tried.. but it's just not as vivid or as viseral as something like DMT or Mushrooms - how can I achieve this?

More detail: I can't spend 5-10 years meditating on a daily basis.. why? Because I'm human and unless you don't have a family, bills to pay, stress and are a healthy individual it's probably impossible(let's be real consistancy is so god dam difficult).

Closest thing I have is doing this on my back just before bed for about 10-15 minutes, sometimes up to an hour about 2/3 times a week... helps me remember my dreams a little and if I can stick with it i'm just super calm and I do feel like for slight moments things are a little more vivid.

I tried researching this stuff. I don't have mates I can go to Amsterdam with and try mushrooms or anything like that. I'm also quite a sick person so taking drugs is a much bigger risk for me than most.

But I've heard people really being able to see their inner/outer selves.. understand the universe and are still processing what they experienced through drugs.. Alan Watts seems to have gathered this through Buddhism..

Listening to people like Alan Watts and Terrence. McKenna and I'm like: "I need this in my life before I die.."

Based on your experiences what are the possibilities for me?

I don't want calm - I want to experience that spiritual kick in the ass.. I've spent over 2 decades searching, trying, begging, crying, screaming, retrying, praying(even though I am not even religious) ... needless to say I'm desperate and I'm running out of time.

Any advice would be awesome - thanks in advance.

what are you supposed to do with the eyes during Trataka (Candle Gazing)?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:52 PM PDT

I've been looking into different forms of meditation after practicing centering prayer and mindful breathing for a year, and heard about trataka or candle-gazing. Some articles I've read say to keep the eyes open until it hurts and tears run down your face, and then to close the eyes and gaze up to the Third Eye. Other articles say it's okay to blink and to gaze as long as desired at the candle before visualizing the candle in the mind. There also seem to be different opinions on whether to wear glasses or contacts while meditating, or if it's best to look at the candle without visual aid. So what is the correct method of seeing during trataka?
