| Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:21 PM PST My wife has been practicing yoga for a few years now with in-person classes and following youtube classes (yoga with Adriene for example) alongside other types of exercise (barre classes mostly). She recently commented that she's interested in starting to design her own sequences as we've continued to be at home due to COVID. With her birthday coming up, I want to get her a book or something to help her enrich her practice. Do you have any suggestions r/yoga? For more context, I think she would consider herself at an intermediate level for her own practice. Her preferred types of yoga are ashtanga and vinyasa. At her classes, she can typically do all of the poses that come up and she has a solid base of experience. Regarding poses, though, she only knows them by their western names and so some material is out of her range when she's searched for things about designing sequences. At other times, she commented that she is really looking for a resource highlighting which poses and smaller sequences flow well together and complement each other throughout a session. Recently, my wife got The Yoga Bible by Christina Brown and really liked it. I think it was maybe from the pose information in the book about build-up and counter poses that got her thinking about designing her own flows. She also bought Mark Stephens' Yoga Sequencing book and thought that while the pre-designed sequences were exactly the type of information she wanted, the book was too detailed/advanced for her current needs. So ideally, do any other books or resources exist that are like the Stephens book at a lighter level? Additionally, if resources like this do exist not as a book but as another type of media like a website, flashcard, etc., those suggestions are also welcome! I can always find other ideas for a birthday gift - I just want to help her with this if I can. TL;DR: As an upcoming birthday present, I'm looking for a book about designing yoga sequences for my wife, preferably for an intermediate practitioner. Does something like that exist? If so, could you please point me to those resources? [link] [comments] |
| Do cork yoga blocks get less slippery after a while? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:33 PM PST Hello everyone, I want to use two yoga blocks primarily to help with sun salutations/stepping forward etc. by elevating my hands. I bought two cork ones that turned out too small (narrow) for my big hands, so I had to buy two more that are wider. However, I really struggle not to slip on them in down dog. They are very dry and have little grip on my hands, so when I go too deep into the posture, my hands start slipping forward. I know that yoga mats are more slippery when new, so I'm hoping that I won't have to buy another pair of yoga blocks. So two questions:
Thank you for any advice/experiences! [link] [comments] |

| Looking for tips regarding Yoga exercises to strengthen my Lumbar instability Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:38 AM PST Hi everyone, for the last 20 years I've been struggling with lower back pain including episodes of severe lumbago. Then I began my yoga practice and 2-3 sessions per week helped me to increase my flexibility to the point where I was completely pain free. Unfortunately, 8 days ago I had another episode of extremely painful Lumbago. Now that I am back on my feet again, I'm asking myself if there are yoga exercises that help me control my lumbar instability (which is the prime candidate for my symptoms according to my doctor) and increase my lumbar flexibility. Subjectively, The movement I'm struggling most with atm (i.e. not fully recovered) is standing on one leg, raising my other leg and touching the toes. I feel like i am very weak and unstable in the sideways motion that occurs during this movement. Hence, I would be interested to learn if there are any yoga exercises to work on improving the strength and flexibility required to perform this sideways movement. Does anybody have any tips for me? Have you been in a similar situation and improved your symptoms by doing yoga? [link] [comments] |
| Universal Yoga inquiry/discussion Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:10 AM PST Hey yogis top of the morning to you. I wanted to talk about UY with you guys. I recently discovered it when I tried out a new studio (I had to leave my old one that I teach and practice at for the last 5 years due to conflicts with new management... it was heartbreaking). So, I practiced this with an amazing teaching from Russia, and I don't know if it was him who was so amazing or UY or both, but I just found it to be amazing. I was wondering if anyone has experience in this style, or possibly has trained in it. I am very intrigued and am curious to learn more. I'm hoping it's not a bikram-sort of harmful practice or something in disguise, you know? (I don't mean to disrespect you if you like bikram, I just don't like that school with the rigidity and he was a bad man as well.) Does anyone here practice or teach it, or have opinions on it? Thanks yogis. Have a nice day. ✨ [link] [comments] |

| Incorporating asanas into daily life Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST Hello beautiful peeps! I like to do the tree pose when I'm doing the washing up or brushing my teeth to improve my balance. I often do the butterfly or log whilst sat on my desk chair at work. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
| Have anyone tried Yoga classes on Neou app?? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:59 AM PST So my job gave me Neou app subscription and I am using it to workout at home, they have a lot of Yoga concepts and classes and I am little overwhelmed. I want to improve my asanas and do more proper Yoga but I am almost a begginer (I did kundalini yoga at a center years ago and it wasn't for me and I had different yoga classes at gyms but not in a consistent way. I've tried some classes on Neou app and they usually mix Yoga postures with more fitness movements, or barre... Others that seem more like yoga are so advanced that I can't do even the alternatives postures but the begginers classes are again more pilates than Yoga... Can anyones recommed me a good yoga concept/teacher/class on Neou? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:17 AM PST I am new to yoga and have started primarily with some restorative yoga for my hip (osteoarthritis). Im a heavy 40 year old guy who needs a decent amount of support. I have found yoga to be great for opening my hips, in addition to stretching out my extremely tight muscles in my legs and lower back. I'm looking for a really supportive bolster that wont flatten down over time. Ive read a bunch of articles on the internet about bolster fillings. I am wondering what people would suggest for me. I need something fairly high as I find it difficult to bend all the way over for child's pose and keep my chest on the bolster (mostly due to my hips not being flexible). Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
| I need advice on sleeping in lotus/semi-lotus pose Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:39 AM PST Due to a combo of factors I decided I want to sleep sitting down/upright, however I have a big fear of either having my head roll back o hang down(injuring the neck/spine) is there any way to adress this issue and solve it?i Know its possible,i have read books with accounts of monks sleeping in lotus. But im also afraid of damaging the spine. I specially train my neck with bridges so maybe its not as risky?but it could hurt in the morning [link] [comments] |
