QAnon, Covid-19, conspiracy theories and disinformation in Yoga – What are your stories?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:49 AM PST

    Hello all,

I'm a writer (and long time yogi) doing some research into conspiracy theories in the yoga scene. I would love to hear your experiences/stories.

    • Have you had a yoga teacher who has begun to talk about anti-vax ideas or QAnon?
    • Have you struggled to take on conspiracy theories in your yoga community?
    • Are you aware of an influential yogi who is promoting ideas you feel are dangerous?
    • Have you fallen out with a yogi, or teacher over these issues?
    • Have certain studios/brands become particularly associated with conspiracy theories/disinformation?
    • Or perhaps you have found yourself becoming convinced of some of these ideas after being introduced to them through fellow yogis?

These are just a few questions to give you a sense of what I'm interested in hearing about but I welcome all thoughts on this subject. Please do share and if you want to talk anonymously feel free to DM me,

    Thank you + namaste!

I would like to educate myself about the philosophy of yoga and spirituality but don't know where to start

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 11:38 AM PST

Hi, I've been practicing yoga asana for about two years. Recently i've started meditating and I love it. Since there is a lockdown in my country I would like to use the free time to educate myself about the philosophy of yoga, meditation and spirituality. I am a big podcast lover. I've tried listening to some of Dan Harris podcast but I feel like those episodes are too advanced. So please do you have any podcast episode recommendation on these topics? Some podcasts that really influenced you or have some great information about any of these topics? Thank youu.

    Recommendation for surya namaskar audio

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 01:13 PM PST

    Hey there,

I am looking for audio or video of someone leading the sun salutaion. I know how to do it, I dont need elaborate explanation, I just would like someone to tell me to inhale/exhale and switch to the next position. So basically how it is in Yoga class, someone to dictate the tempo for me and remember which leg to put back. There is an incredible amount of videos for this and tons of apps, but most I find are detailed instructions on how to do it. So I was hoping some of you were looking for the same thing I am and could share some recommendations. Thanks a lot in advance!

Disheartened by yoga, how to get over it?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 01:58 AM PST

So I've been practising vinyasa for a few months now, from total beginner to where I'm now fairly confident in intermediate classes, with some modifications/options but practising for an hour pretty much everyday and I'm not progressing hugely fast but sometimes I make small wins by just being consistent.

Yesterday I did the bad thing and recorded my yoga in a time lapse video, not usually my thing but lots of people from my studio do it and it looks kinda cool (i love my studio but it has a showy-off sports bra Instagram videos vibe) I wasn't super enjoying the session knowing that my phone was recording but I was kinda intrigued to see what I looked like, thought it might be good to observe and make some adjustments.

So I didn't really enjoy this practise but I also hated the way I looked when I practised, I was all over the place. Like I did not look like what I thought I looked like in my head. It also brought back some body hang ups I've been working on getting over.

The whole thing has left me feeling deflated. Have you ever felt like this and how did you get over it?

Finally figured out what I need from a practice...advice please?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:15 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have posted several times before and gotten great advice.

I have migraines and exercise (including all but the most gentle yoga) triggers it. It seems like intensity of the activity isn't an issue, rather duration. I have been getting consistent migraines after 30 minute practices, but if I do kettlebell circuits, I'm fine.

Does anyone know of a) a practice with lots of built in breaks (yes I know I can stop at any time but I can't bring myself to when I'm trying to follow a video, I get really lost) or b) shorter, higher intensity practices done as circuits?

I don't want to stop doing yoga, I just want to make sure that I'm not making myself sicker!

    Crow pose advice?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 02:25 PM PST

Is it considered "bad form" or "incorrect" to have your knees resting slightly outside your triceps during crow pose? If I do it like that I can quite easily get balanced and hold for a good 30-40 seconds (usually exiting the pose because I want to, not due to falling), but if I try to balance my knees above my elbows or in my armpits they just roll out of place (I'm very hyper mobile so I'm not sure this is something I can fix with strength).

I can hold crane pose (with my arms completely straight) for about ten seconds with my knees "correctly" in my elbows, just can't for the life of me figure out the positioning when my arms are bent in crow!?

    Down dog app question.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:13 AM PST

I've been using this app for quite a while now. I love it! I've been thinking lately their levels of practice seem more difficult than they should be? I'm stuck in basic (never taken a class before) even though I've been practicing off & on for 10 years. The basic level includes chaturanga, dancers pose, figure 4 chair, etc. these seem pretty advanced. What do you think? Can't imagine what the advanced level would be like!

    Where to look during inversions?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 01:08 PM PST

Hi! I'm starting to get the hang of elbow stands, but when I practice I look straight ahead at the wall (not at the floor). It seems like the safer thing to do, and keeps my spine straight. However, in aaaaall of the photos/videos I see on Instagram and Youtube, people are doing their elbow and handstands while looking at the floor. Am I missing something?

Where should I be looking during inversions, and why?

Who has done Remote (Online) Yoga Classes with friends or teams/work colleagues?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 12:32 PM PST

    Hi Yogis!

We recently did a remote online yoga class with our team at our company, we are lucky because one of our team members is a yoga teacher. It was really fun, but we had some audio issues and some team members never did a remote yoga class but really enjoyed it.

Has anyone else done remote online yoga classes with friends or work colleagues? Who else rather takes "live" classes from classpass or so instead of youtube videos?

    Thanks for your opinions!

    How to open up shoulders?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 12:24 PM PST

    Hello!

What are the best ways to open up the shoulders? I've realized that I have a decently flexible back (I probably still need to stretch it too), but my shoulders are so tight, I can't seem to get into any more advanced asanas like dhanurasana with flip grip, full camel/paripurna ustrasana or something like a needle/scorpion.

    Thank you!

    Trying yoga again

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 04:10 AM PST

I keep trying to get into yoga and then not bothering after a couple of weeks.

Seeing as I'm in Lockdown 2.0 I'm determined to fully getting into practicing yoga regularly.

I'm going to do Yoga with Adriene videos and start with the home challenge. What I'm wanting to achieve is more flexibility and possibly be a bit more toned.

Does anyone have any tips to stay motivated? And to achieve what I want?
