This is an otherwise pointless post, but I want to wish all of you my dear community a wonderfully wholesome holiday season in whichever way you celebrate it ❤️

Ways in which Ashtanga will damage the body or be insufficient for physical fitness?

When I went through Yoga Teacher Training my teacher specifically chided me for doing some neck rolls and arm swings for about 30 seconds before I started the primary series. He stated that the primary series has everything that my body needs, and any warm-up or exercise before the primary series is superfluous.

I've been reading Practice And All Is Coming: Abuse, Cult Dynamics, And Healing In Yoga And Beyond, and I am wondering about ways in which the physical practice of Ashtanga yoga isn't good for the body, or ways in which it is leaving out aspects of physical fitness. The few things that jump out to me are:

    • Aerobic fitness (there is a vast difference in cardiovascular fitness between doing a vigorous yoga practice and going for a run or a cycle)
    • Pulling (while there is plenty of pushing in all the Chaturangas, I imagine that the muscles involved in pulling would be relatively underdeveloped)
    • Stretching neck muscles (although the finishing sequence compresses the neck down/forward with Salamba Sarvangasana, Halasana, and related movements, I haven't seen side neck stretches in the primary series)

Are there other notable ways in which a regular Ashtanga practice will damage or will be insufficient for well-rounded physical fitness?
