I did my first flow in six months this evening and I need some words of encouragement

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 01:23 PM PST

Hi everyone! I've been a lurker here since I started practicing and this is my first post to this sub.

So, I used to practice Rocket in a beautiful studio, two to three times a week for about a year, with wonderful instructors and I loved it. It became a place of complete peace for me. I could flow almost effortlessly through the poses, I felt so balanced and strong and I was even starting to work on handstands.

Then COVID happened. My studio obviously had to close and they moved their classes online. This impacted me in the fact I don't really have enough room in my flat to practice easily and I was/am struggling to afford classes. Lockdown made my job very unstable and I had to make drastic cuts to my outgoings, which meant my monthly yoga payments was amongst the things I had to sacrifice. Add this to the general feeling of life changing drastically and being generally crap, and I just stopped practicing.

Tonight I did an 11 minute flow with Adriene (in my tiny kitchen, trying not to kick everything off the worktops) and I almost cried. I know that after six months I shouldn't expect much but I felt worse today after I did my very first class. My legs were shaking, I couldn't hold a downward dog because my head started hurting due to pressure, I almost faceplanted the floor moving from plank to cobra due to having almost no upper body strength anymore and overall I just feel rubbish.

I know I'm not being kind to myself and I have to accept who and where I am now, but has anyone else been here? I'm definitely going to keep at it and get back to where I was because I want it enough. I suppose I just need to know that I'm not alone in this.

    Thanks.

I just learned about the app through this subreddit, so I downloaded it to try it out. Upon opening it, I saw that they're offering a new year special and letting people try it for free until January 31st. You don't need to enter any card information to start the trial either!

Differences between Alo Moves and glo?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 04:30 PM PST

I've searched google, youtube, and this sub and for the life of me I cannot find any examples of the interface within glo and any examples of the videos and how the classes are structured.

Currently doing the trial of Alo and I like it but i see a lot of folks prefer Glo and I wanted to figure if it's worth the effort to cancel the Alo auto pay to try glo as well.

What are the main differences if you've tried both. Why are you subscribed to the app you use? Both have iphone/ipad/apple tv apps so same access there. Is the glo platform easy to use and search?

Im more into the 'physical' part of yoga while also focusing on breathing and alignment but not so into the meditative parts. So I'm interested in classes that are somewhat challenging but doesnt move too quickly.

Thanks in advance! Apologies if I missed a prior thread, i saw one that talked about comparing these two but not specifically the platform itself.

~20min home yoga routine for agility and flexibility? Looking to start karate soon

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 02:48 PM PST

So I'm 19, I used to be really agile and flexible but have lost some of it recently. I'm looking to start karate soon and want to regain my agility and flexibility. Like I used to be able to kick/raise my leg high but I can barely raise my leg above stomach level, I used to also be able to touch my toes standing straight but can't anymore aha. I don't really have the time to go to any yoga classes or spend masses amount at home on it. So I'm looking for some home routine ideally 20-40 mins. Thanks for any help

    Practicing in studio during Covid-19

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 10:56 AM PST

I have been doing yoga at home since March and have developed a pretty good practice. I'm curious what the in studio experience is like for people, especially going to studios that require masks for the duration of your practice, staggered entering/exiting and no change rooms - has it been easy to adapt your practice and habits to these things? I'm not sure I am ready to quite yet but it is something I'd like to consider in a couple of months and I'm not sure if I'm better off just sticking to home practice.

Advanced Poses & muscle strength - I am in awe, but baffled.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 09:54 AM PST

I am on mobile, and I have a potentially silly question.

I am a yoga fledgling. I try to incorporate yoga as-close-to-daily-as-possible, for 20-30 minutes. I am stiff and weak, but as a beginner I know that is par for the course and can already see subtle differences.

As I look forward, I see these beautiful, intricate, and/or challenging poses (like Crow pose, or a headstand with Lotus) and I am gobsmacked at the pure muscle strength these require.

My question lies here: is the muscle strength for these and similar poses built upon yoga alone, after years and years of constant improvement and practice, or are some of the more advanced yogi's doing outside exercise regimens (think: "hitting the gym") as a supplement?

I am always finding myself in complete awe of their raw strength and I guess the idea of achieving that level of athleticism through yoga alone over the years is absolutely mind-blowing, in the most reverent way possible.

Advice on stretching pelvic floor and tight legs

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 08:31 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm very new to stretching, I really shouldn't be because I'm an avid gym-goer but I usually swap out stretches for warmup sets with a lower weight.

I've had a very tight pelvic floor and legs for years now, to the point where I can't sit cross-legged and leg stretches feel quite uncomfortable. I've also had lower back pain in the past which I believe relates to my tight pelvic muscles.

Currently, I do the following routine each day, each stretch for 30 seconds with 2 rounds.

    - Happy baby pose

    - Hindi squat

    - Wide Hindi squat

    - Butterfly

    - Reverse butterfly

    - Pigeon (on both sides)

    - Reverse Hurdler (on both sides)

    - Kneeling hip flexor stretch (on both sides)

    - Cat and Cow (Going from one to the other for 30 seconds)

    - Downward dog

    - Cobra

    - Runners lunge (on both sides)

    - Kneeling quad stretch (on both sides)

    - Child's pose

I've been doing this routine for around a month now, no noticeable results really but I know noticeable results can take a fair while.

I just wanted some feedback on the stretches I'm doing. I'm very new and want to make sure what I'm doing will hopefully help by tight pelvic floor and stretch out my leg muscles over time.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Yoga with sinusitis and for healing

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 06:01 AM PST

Hello, I do sitting meditation for more than a year and I'd like to start yoga because I feel that I need some movement in my practice to release accumulated energy in my body that prevents itself from healing. I have problems with sinusitis. If I lean forwards so my head is facing the ground it gets much worse. I am searching for yoga without positions where I have to do that and I am open to "healing yoga".

If you have any suggestions and tips, I would be really grateful :)

Shortness of breath during yoga: is this normal and can be improved?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 01:45 AM PST

    Hi all,

Especially during the syncronization of movement and breath, I am having a shortness of breath. I feel the need to keep breathing in and out faster and it's struggling for me to slow down that. Is this something you also experienced at all? Any input on why this could be happening would be appreciated it. Its been a month of almost daily practicing for me.

    Thank you!

Any experience with the online Aligned Yoga Teacher Training course?

Considering signing up before the sale ends, even if I won't be able to get the Yoga Alliance certification (requiring course completion by end 2020).

I love Briohny, and it seems awesome to learn under her, even remotely.

Where to start? What poses are best for beginners, mainly focusing on chest and up?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 06:04 PM PST

Hello everyone, I am in need of some guidance. In the recent past, I was in an accident and damaged by back and neck. My massage therapist suggested yoga, mainly focusing on chest and up. My chiropractor also agrees and says it could also help with the damage to my lower back as well.

I've been trying to do some research on what poses are going to be best, but there is so much out there, I'm getting stressed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
