Like the title says, my teacher seems to be not a huge of consistent drills. Their reasoning is that we all have a limited amount of physical and mental energy. So we want to be careful about pulling from that energy to do other things — like drills — because then we will have less energy and focus for actual Ashtanga practice.

They also mentioned, perhaps from experience, that drills can also start getting to our head, so thinking about drills, doing drills, planning drills, and documenting drills, etc., can take a lot of energy and focus. This can be self defeating and take away from the Ashtanga practice.

So they recommends occasional play with drills.

This conversation came up because I've been interested in doing some drills. Nothing super extensive but some pulling exercises with a pull up bar, resistance bands, and other exercises to work on jump backs and jump throughs. I can see how it can become too habitual to only focus on the physical practice but I feel like it could help with some imbalances I have. Of course, the practice could sort that out - but is it bad to want to have a little drill practice on the side to supplement that?

I'd like to add that they are a wonderful teacher and they aren't controlling by any means! But I just have a conflicting opinion here that I'm not sure how to resolve.

    So what's your opinion?
