I find I don't enjoy lengthy meditation during yoga sessions... I can't be the only one, right?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:18 PM PST

Just kinda wanted to talk about this and hear your thoughts.

I have been practicing yoga on and off for several years, about 5 or 6 years. Besides enjoying the exercise, I love the mind/body connection aspects of yoga.... Breathing with movement, the flows, the poses... Overall I feel yoga is a beautiful thing and definitely has benefits beyond the physical.

However, when I do a yoga session and it starts off/ends with a really long meditation, I find myself getting bored and (honestly) impatient. I've tried meditating (separate from yoga) a few times (by a few times I mean meditation consistently for several days in hopes of creating habit/training my brain) and it's the same thing.

To be honest I think part of it, for me, is that I am a very energetic person to begin with. I hate sitting still. Different forms of movement (dancing, hiking, biking) have always been my favorite forms of release. For me, the actual flows/poses in yoga feel like (what I believe) meditation is supposed to deliver - a moment to focus less on ongoing thoughts and focus more on the present moment. Maybe I am wrong though.

I am curious to hear what you all think. This has been on my mind a lot since starting Yoga with Adriene's most recent 30 day "Breath" series.

FYI, I am not trying to shit on meditation here. I know many people benefit from it and I think it's a great practice for most people. My partner is an avid meditator and I see the benefits he gets from doing it.

    Slippery cork mat?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:37 PM PST

I got a new cork mat for Christmas (yay!) And I love it, but unless I'm putting a lot of pressure into my feet or hands, they slip.

Is it because it's new and I need to treat it? Thanks!

How can you press both your pubic bone AND the tops of your feet down in poses like Cobra?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:08 AM PST

Adriene always cues to do this, but it seems like I can only press down one or the other. Any tips? Thank you!

Who are your favorite glo teachers?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:22 AM PST

I got glo at the beginning of the pandemic because I live in SF and one of my favorite teachers I used to practice with (Jason crandell) at the studio has like 200 classes on there. I love the way he teaches, it's very technical, straightforward, and I like how he cues. I also enjoy Annie Carpenter's classes, which are challenging and have a bit more emphasis on breath work than Jason. I was wondering if anyone here had any fave teachers (or even specific sequences) and if you could share what you like about their style.

Want to start yoga but don't know how.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:52 AM PST

Hi everyone. Recently I thought to myself, "how can I improve my well being?" Money is tight a bit now so joining a gym right now is out of the question. I am an overweight (24 f) and I want to treat my body better. Not to mention I suffer from anxiety and sometimes depression.

So then it hit me. Why not try yoga? I'm committed to it now so I need to know where to start. I'm already going to be buying a yoga mat after work today, but what else would I need? Also what poses are good for beginners? I'm gonna look up stuff online, but I would also love some insight here. How did yoga change you and your life? Thank you.

    Quick question about recovery

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:13 AM PST

First of all, thank you for the inspiration! Yall are rad. Secondly, thank you for introducing me to down dog. Thirdly, what are some routines/exercises for recovery days? I hadgreat intentions of "30 days, 30 minutes every day". My back has other plans, so I need a recovery day. How do you stay "active" and recover at the same time?

New to yoga having some issues with form, alignment, positioning at home

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 07:54 AM PST

Hi everyone,A warning this may be a TMI post for some.I don't know if I should continue to do yoga as I think I might not be 'designed' for it. This is because I have some disfigurements I guess you could call them and other weird body issues that have stopped me from pursuing yoga properly but ppl I know have benefited from it so I'd like to put my all into it.

My feet overpronate but have high arches, I have severe bunions to the point that my feet point outwards if placed together (my feet as worse than the extreme in this pic: https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-2hrqsdpr4/product_images/uploaded_images/bunion-severity-chart.jpg). I"m also knock-kneed with very tight hamstrings. Some of my joints dislocate due to being hypermobile but in particular I have problems with my knees, shoulder and elbows. I have gastro problems too so on occasion my abdomen is really bloated and I can't do certain moves because of the boating, tension within my pelvis, like I can't lift my knee up toward my chest if I was sat down because my abdo is so big at times (I have a perm condition that causes this at times). And, balance, my balance is shot. So poses like warrior pose is way too hard for me, the balance and my knees.

TLDR: If I can't put my feet together and get the alignment right on some moves, is there any point in continuing yoga? It's not like the bunions are going anywhere or my knock-knees! Also same question about my abdomen is stopping me from being able to achieve the pose (like child's pose), even my balance is shot, is there any point in continuing yoga? Can anyone here relate and have you managed to get through this phase?

Where I live there's no access to yoga studios plus we can't go out as we're in lockdown. It's videos etc only for me.Confession: I did 'practice' yoga many years ago but ultimately gave up because of these problems & the yoga instructor kept getting pissed with me because of the way my feet and knees are/not being able to do the pose properly.

    Thanks

How to change from chest to stomach breathing

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:45 AM PST

Hi all! I thought this was one of the best places I could post this..

For stars, I'm 6'0 330lbs, I've always been naturally athletic and played college football. However from a very young age (11-12) I started holding my stomach in very slightly to get rid of my belly. Today I was laying in bed restless at 3am and decided to look it up, turns out I'm not the only person who does this! It turns out a large % of the population does this and it results in us becoming chest breathers instead of using our diaphragm. This is super important/interesting for me because I suffer from health anxiety and I feel like it's impossible for me to get a good breath of air. I tried stomach breathing and realized I'm just to tight and can't really do it, are there any stretches I can do that will help transition from chest breathing to stomach breathing? Thanks so much!

How to improve at ardha supta virasana (half supine hero pose)?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:16 AM PST

I was practicing yoga daily for about 3 months, and now after 6 months away from yoga I'm trying to ease my way back into it again. I came across ardha supta virasana (half supine hero pose) for the first time in a Down Dog beginner yin practice and even resting on my forearms was a struggle.

How do I improve at this pose? Where is the best place to put props and are there any other stretches/poses that will help my flexibility for this?

    Thanks. :)

    Down Dog App Trouble??

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:19 AM PST

The last few days I keep getting a popup that something is wrong when I go on the app. I can keep clicking it off and work around it and a video will play (though it's jumpy) but it takes a lot of time to get there because the notification keeps coming back. Has anyone else been experiencing this or is it maybe something with my phone? I did a forced stop on the app and it didn't help.

    Short Arms?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:13 PM PST

I'm a bit newer to yoga and have been doing the yoga with Adrienne 30 day challenge and I've noticed that a lot of the times I'm in a forward lunge position, it's extremely uncomfortable because some of the weight is meant to be on my hands rather than simply my legs and I try to balance it out but my arms are too short to have my hands touch the ground. I'm noticing it be uncomfortable to even try because I have a larger chest that blocks me from leaning forward further into the leg to allow my arms to touch down, even then I think they'd be too short anyways. Is there a way to fix this with blocks or something similar or is it just getting through the discomfort until it's normal?
