Potential aid in knee pain? Addition to the sequence? Thoughts??

    Hi guys!

So I was practicing ashtanga for a few months. I thought it was a great practice... But, I found my knee pain became unbearable. I couldn't sit cross-legged for more than 5 minutes without pain upon straightening my legs. I couldn't crouch, squat, any kind of movement really. So, I stopped the practice altogether and went back to my own.

I started doing some deep hip openers. Pigeon with a 90° angle slowly building to obtuse, dragon/gecko.. That sort of thing and I notice I'm able to get into lotus without the help of my hands and my knees are not in pain anymore. Maybe this is common knowledge and I apologise if so but realistically if we try to externally rotate a closed hip with an opposing force from the foot it's going to put a lot of strain on the knee joint.

This is my own experience and what makes sense to me but I was wondering your thoughts on incorporating pigeon into the sequence for my practice? Is that frowned upon? Maybe that's a silly question and I could listen intuitively. But when I learned ashtanga it seems very set and strict... This is the way it is. This is the way it has to be. Feet together.. Fingers together.. Etc. My teacher even said doing some forward folds and pigeon before practice would be frowned upon and sun salutations are there as warmups... But I'm surprised there are not many deep hip openers in the primary sequence. I feel as though they would be crucial in preventing the oh so common knee pain.

I know a lot of people say it goes away but it wasn't that way for me.. So please let me know your thoughts on playing with the sequence.. On your experience with hips+knees. Thoughts on the idea that open hips are necessary for prevention of knee pain.. Etc!

Looking for a newbie Pranayama course recommendation

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:02 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

Hope you are all safe and sound!

I have been really interested in yoga since the initial lockdown and since October I have been practicing ashtanga with a teacher as well as buying a couple of books like Light on Yoga which also briefly touches on pranayama.

I would like to deepen my pranayama knowledge and create a habit and practice and I was wondering if anybody knew any online course which would be more towards newbies in order to set up and create my own practice.

Also when do you guys practice pranayama? Before or after asana? I currently do a 20min meditation before my asana practice.

Thank you all so much and have the loveliest of days!

    Daniel

    Withdrawal of senses

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 05:44 AM PST

Hi, as some of you know, ashtanga is called the eight limbs to yoga, or union. The one of the limbs is the wothdrawal of senses. This is a generally hard concept to understand and was hoping one of you have mastered this, or atleast know how to describe it in an understandable way.
