| A little bit of encouragement for a daily practice Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST I have practiced yoga for a few years now. Only until the last few months of 2020, have I really been aiming for a daily practice. I am noticing a major change happening within me. This practice has opened my eyes to the art of living and breathing. It's opened my eyes to the things I enjoy and has helped me make time for the things and people I love. I am forever grateful for this beautiful practice to move and breathe in my amazingly capable body. I have also noticed that in recent classes at some point, I begin sobbing. And when I say sobbing I mean SOBBING. It feels not so great in that moment, but after I run out of tears, and I CONTINUE ON with my yoga class And move and breathe, I have an overwhelming sense of peace and happiness. It's almost like I can literally feel the layers covering up my true self being peeled away. It's truly a euphoric feeling and I don't know if I could have uncovered them if I hadn't started my daily practice. There was this one class in particular, when we began the class in childs pose. And my teacher was talking about energy. I began crying just at the beginning of class. Let me tell you, I had such a spiritual experience within myself and I felt so in touch with my true self. I actually felt the weight be lifted off of my shoulders. I'm just posting this here in case anyone felt urged to begin a DAILY practice. It really can change your life. Wherever you are in life, YOU CAN FIND PEACE. It is already within you, you just have to uncover it. There is a myriad of reasons the world tells us we can't be okay right now, BUT THIS IS WRONG. YOU CAN BE IN PERFECT HARMONY WITH ALL THAT SURROUNDS YOU. All you have to do is move and breathe into this beautiful body of yours, the one that holds you up every day. If you're breathing everyday, you have the opportunity to be unconditionally happy, every single day. Namaste. Practice on even when you don't want to, that's when you need yoga the most. | Too impatient for yoga...? ADVICE Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST Hi all, I got into yoga a few years ago, and felt very flexible and strong! Absolutely loved the feeling and remember genuinely enjoying the experience. I've tried to get back into it, however, I find im too impatient to complete a 20 minute guided session on YouTube, like, I actually get bored after 10 minutes. What would you suggest i do? Shoud I do shorter sessions or less frequent or maybe I don't enjoy yoga like I use too? Any advice would be appreciated! Xx [link] [comments] |
| Man bits getting in the way of yoga poses Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:50 PM PST Ok, so I'm a beginner in yoga, only been doing it about 2 weeks but been doing it daily with at home yoga videos. I seem to have some very uncomfortable moments when doing some of the leg cross poses so legit question for the men. How do you deal with this? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:45 PM PST Hello everyone, I just started yoga on a mostly daily basis about 5 months ago. It has changed my life in many ways and I'm grateful but I'm having issues with nausea, sometimes slight, sometimes {like today} I almost stopped my practice. I've always had issues with carnival rides, sea sickness etc. Basically when my head is below my heart it can bother me. I mostly do Yoga with Adriene. Has anyone successfully dealt with this issue ? | Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:03 PM PST I was ecstatic cause I was able to get my unsupported headstand in a short amount of time and I thought it was pretty ok until I actually took a video and my legs are not straight at all LOL Tips for proper balance/alignment in headstand pose? [link] [comments] |
| Advice for developing a personal home practice (without video/classes etc) Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:24 PM PST Apologies if this has been covered in the FAQs, I had a scroll through and couldn't see anything that answered this question specifically. I've been doing yoga classes for a number of years now, and more virtually in recent times. However, I'm feeling like I'm at a stage now where I want to start developing my own practice instead of relying on external classes etc. I'm feeling stuck developing a practice that works, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. Do you plan a routine before hand? Or just get on the mat and flow into whatever comes to mind? I've read a few bits of advice that recommend keeping a journal, possibly taking notes during classes. All thoughts welcome, and thankyou in advance. [link] [comments] |
| Some recommendations about yoga books? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:59 AM PST I've been doing yoga and meditation since 2 months ago, and now I'd like to find a book which I can learn more about yoga and the whole spiritual thing. If you have some ideas please let me know. Thanks in advanced. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:52 AM PST Hey so I had a question about some guilt I have on asking for payment. I started teaching a few months ago and long story short one student (a very close friend as well) did not pay for months. I understood she did not have money. She bought a studio membership recently and when I asked her 'what can you do payment wise from here on for this class' she vehemently paid (too much) and was very upset. She later said she wouldn't be attending if she had to pay. Basically what I feared most (and why I avoided it for a month) is what occurred. Has anyone else experienced guilt in this situation? The gift of yoga is one I cherish and feel saddened it came down to monetary issues. I honestly feel like an asshole asking for payment but I felt I had to stand my ground as I felt I was being used. Please, any honest feedback from teachers would be so incredible. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:39 PM PST So my new job involves going to multiple places around town and caring for house / office plants. It's been a great experience and very peaceful. Last year I began seriously working on my posture, have made great strides, and getting closer and closer to comfort. Now the issues: - Carrying the water: the pails are not heavy, but it is a constant weight throughout the day. I follow the "POSH" standard, and carry the pail Port Out when leaving the van, and Starboard Home when returning. This helps to even out the time each side is carrying the weight. - Filling up the pails: most fill up points are outdoor spigots that are about 1-2 feet from the ground. Because most do not pour a nice clean line of water, I have to hold the pails next to the spigots to avoid a complete mess and waste of water. This means I am bent over holding the pail still each time I fill up. My questions: - What other suggestions do you have besides "POSH" to avoid strain while carrying around the pail? - What stance / pose would you suggest I take while filling up at a spigot? (So far I have bent at the waist, and recently been trying to keep my back straight as I was beginning to feel pain in my mid-back along the spine, which is what prompted this post) - What poses would you suggest I incorporate into my yoga routines to help strengthen my back, specifically mid-back I would presume? I have also gotten suggestions to work on my core in relation to working on my posture, so perhaps poses to help with my core as well if relevant. (I am a beginner in yoga, so some sort of visual reference or video of the poses would go a long way) Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |
| Looking advice from any yogis with naturally tight hamstrings... Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:20 AM PST I have an anterior pelvic tilt which cause me to have very tight hamstrings. The poses I feel this affects most are forward fold, downward dog, seated forward bend. Any improvements I've made have been incredibly small and I'm not sure if this will ever correct with repeated practice as it's just the way my body is shaped. Anyone else have/had this issue and any tips on how to improve hamstring flexibility? [link] [comments] |
| How often do you practice ashtanga? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST Greetings and happy new year. So I'm thinking of trying out on ashtanga. I'm mostly interested in the spiritual and philosophical aspect of it. Can you practice it "the traditional way" without a teacher on your side? What lifestyle changes (if any) do you need to make? Also, if you have any book recommendations or sources where I can learn more about it I would greatly appreciate it. Blessings to you all! [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:19 AM PST So here's a little about me that might help when giving advice to me: 1. I've never done yoga regularly. At most, I've managed 3x a week for about 3 weeks. Very irregular. And I once did a few months of twice a week classes. 2. I need to join a class because online videos don't work for me. I just stop midway if I don't feel like it. 3. This is the first time in a long time that I would be able to go to a studio and practice routinely. I had major surgery at the end of 2019, after a few months of illness. My country had pretty much been in lockdown from March 2019 to September 2019. I lost my job in August and started a new one in December. I also moved cities in December. 4. I'm not extremely fit or motivated. I'm mildly fit and motivated, though. 5. I think trying to get it in more than once a week will be hard right now but at the same time, I don't want to be going once a week if the benefits are minimal. Please help ♡ [link] [comments] |
| Labrum injury, alternative exercises recommendations Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:16 AM PST I've recently being diagnosed with something called 'Femoroacetabular Impingement' (of type CAM, for those who understand what it is). It's not super terrible but it can aggravate, and there are certain situations that I need to avoid where it makes my hip hurt. Unfortunately, one of those situations is literally sitting with my legs crossed which is a pretty standard position when making breathing exercises and other. I wanted to know if someone else here suffers from the same problem, and how to counter it. Some good stretching exercises would be awesome too. For context, I'm super new to yoga. I've been interested in it for awhile now and a few days ago I saw someone here recommending a 'challenge' of 30 days from Adriene, and decided to give it a go. Have a nice day! [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:05 AM PST I have done Pilates for a while and switched to Yoga some months ago, so I would consider myself still as a beginner in Yoga. As I try to advance in the difficulty level (ie. intermediate level in the down dog app) my limbs are getting numb during some poses. While I have no problems with the flexibiliy as such, my arms and legs start to prickle when I stay in the poses for a longer time. Now my question: where does it come from? Is it normal? Does it mean I have to work on my flexibility? Or does it mean I'm doing the poses wrong? Thanks on advance for any help :) [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:31 AM PST How long should I stay in a position when I start feeling lots of pain? My Yoga coach told me that I should at least stay for 20 seconds then relax. If I only stay for 20 seconds, is that too short, should I stay longer? I'm trying to achieve front and middle spilt. My first yoga class started at 9/Dec/2020 and the photos shown below was taken was 9/Jan/2021. So this is my one-month progress. Hopefully I can do the full front and middle spilt before 23/Jan/2021.
