Online teachers that give detailed instructions on yogic breathing and posture

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST

I have searched the sub for teachers like this but havent found anything so far. I've just come away from a yoga with adriene class feeling frustrated. She gives no instruction on yogic breathing or technique and talks constantly about feel good platitudes instead - her classes feel like a self love aerobic class with a yogic element, not yoga. Conversely , many other teachers I've tried feel like a HIIT class with a yogic element. Does anyone know of any classes where the teacher focuses a lot of proper technique? I've learnt from Van Lysbeth's yoga book and found that really helpful. Thanks

I can’t for the life of me do downward dog

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:30 PM PST

So, I'm relatively new to the practice, taking my first (super socially distanced) in person class. I started during quarantine with videos online and found that I absolutely love it!

The thing is, in class, we go into downward dog over and over again. I'm relatively big girl and 6'2", and I can't hold downward dog for more than a few seconds without my wrists screaming at me and my forearms shaking. It seems for everyone else to be an easy pose, even for first-time people in class.

I know it can be modified into puppy, and maybe I'm not doing it right, but puppy doesn't feel like much of anything.

Can anyone suggest any modifications, props, or tips that might help me? I just feel like it's such a common position that I should be able to do it. Thanks in advance! So glad to be here.

How do I start teaching online and privately?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:16 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm a relatively new yoga teacher, and unfortunately I lost my job working at studios due to the virus.

I would like to start teaching online, live via zoom, and perhaps on youtube too (I'm not sure how I feel about contributing to youtube, which is owned by google).

I would also like to offer private classes in my local area.

How would you recommend I get started on getting my offerings out there, online and in my local area?

    Thanks

Anyone tried the paid content from yoga with Adrienne?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:27 PM PST

I started a few months ago, basically everyday 15 mins to an hour and half. I really like YWA's stuff much more than anyone else's videos on YouTube. I was looking at the content online and I really like how a lot of it is organized as well. Just wondering if anyone's tried her paid content and found it to be worth the 100 a year. I don't think that's bad and I don't think I'll be doing a class anytime soon (I would like to after covid) so thought maybe this is a good substitute.

Has anything like this ever happened to anyone during a yoga class?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST

First, it was a heated class. Not necessarily relevant.

But during the entire class I felt a connection with the teacher that felt personal. She said something about "calling you out in a playful way" and "having yoga brain."

Anyway, after class she came up and asked me if I had lower back issues and how her ex husband had them and they never worked it out, etc. A big share. Obviously could just be regular old projection but felt like more than that. Didn't mind it. Never went back because hot yoga isn't for me.

    Yoga brain - a thing?

Yoga Beginner and New to It. Need Some Tips Thank you!

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:26 AM PST

I've never done yoga before. I wanted to try it out as a maintainer of weight. But more for relaxing properties and something to do that will stimulate my mind and calm my nerves. I'm a very anxious person and as college is starting again, I need something to help. And I want to keep it up too.

I don't know the first thing about yoga. Is it better to do in the morning, evening or night? Will it hurt me? How does it make you feel? Is there a diet I should consider while doing yoga? Should I do it everyday or...make a schedule? Or is it a once a week type of thing?

I just need a couple of tips to shape how I'm going to go down this path. Um, also, what types of yoga should I consider? Is there a website that has a collect group of forms to practice? Is there an app with leveling up properties? Or a youtube channel that you all recommend?

    Thanks :)

Yoga to strech the body in the morning as well as meditate

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST

What style of yoga would you suggest to strech my body as well as a spiritual practice for the morning? A style that isn't from the west and is a hindu practice (that would take around 30 minutes)

    Are liforme mats worth it?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:51 AM PST

So like the title, are liforme mats worth it? I see a lot of other alignment mats out there that look similar but I don't know if they really are. Basically I've hurt myself and being properly aligned and even is going to be important for healing according to my physical therapist. I really wanna take my healing process seriously and get better as fast as possible so I can start doing yoga and climbing again. So hearing your guys opinions on alignment mats would be really awesome.

    Two newbie questions!

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:30 PM PST

    Super simple:

    1) in downward dog should I activate my shoulders and "shrug" or should I pull them away from my ears?

    2) in happy child pose, what should I do if my tailbone cannot touch the floor? No matter what I do my pelvis rounds and my bum comes slightly off the floor

Struggling with my seated forward fold, what part of my body is resisting?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:02 PM PST

Standing, I feel like my forward folds are somewhat deep for a beginner, but once I'm seated with my legs ahead, I can barely get to a 45 degree angle. There's no pain or discomfort, really, so I can't tell what part of my body I need to focus on increasing flexibility with or easing and breathing deeper into. Is it my back? Hips? Legs? All of the above?

    Am I deteriorating?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:00 PM PST

So I've been doing yoga daily for almost four weeks now. I've been loving eveything about it and plan to continue doing it for as long as possible.

I've always been pretty flexible, so most poses aren't super hard to get into. I do have very bad knees.

Since last week I haven't really been able to do standing poses anymore cause of the strain it puts on my knees. I've been doing a lot of restorative yoga since and I do feel things getting slowly better, being able to do snall amounts of standing poses at a time.

What does worry me a bit is that since yesterday I feel my bones crack frequently when I move my neck and since today also other body parts. Is my body just trying to loosen up, or is this an unhealthy thing? Please let me know😊

    Muscle cramps

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:22 AM PST

Greetings fellow yogis, looking for any advice for preventing muscle cramps.

Quadriceps complete tense up after training them and it makes it nearly impossible to hold poses.

I lift weights, hydrate, roll out, and stretch all prior to practice.

    Toe cramps.?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:34 AM PST

Any trick to avoid toe cramps? I cannot start any class or sequence in child's pose or cat/cow without toes seizing up unless I do a good ten minute warm up, which isn't always an option in a class setting.

Any beginner yoga channels for ex-Olympic weightlifters?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:59 AM PST

To give you a background of my activity levels, I've competed in rugby, boxing, kickboxing, and finally olympic weightlifting. All to a reasonable country-level competing standard. Oly' lifting was definitely the one that's caused me the most hip (labral tears) & back (SI-joint) pain, and I'm starting to pay the price now (I'm only 29!). Just FYI, I am fully mobile and (almost) pain-free, unless I'm going through a particularly challenging period of weightlifting.

I'm also amount to embark on a PhD, which is going to involve a lot of sitting behind my laptop.

I'm pretty flexible through squat and thoracic movements, thanks to kickboxing and weightlifting, but the yoga poses you guys use absolutely kick my ass.

Are there any beginner channels you could recommend? I'd be looking to do these either on a morning, or just once a day where I can make time alongside a full-time job & studies. My only sticking point is I struggle with the whole "chi/flow" thing, I'd love if I could do yoga purely for it's physical benefits. I'm not against the other side of yoga, it's just not for me.

    Thanks for listening.
