Ashtanga yoga: Help with the meditative aspect of ashtanga?

Help with the meditative aspect of ashtanga?

    Hi fellow ashtangis!

I've been practicing ashtanga for around a year now maybe slightly longer. I've thoroughly enjoyed the journey, but I've discovered some "sinister" motivations that I've unpacked recently. Much of my desire to do ashtanga has been because:

a.) It helps with my anxiety and depression

b.) Because I want to improve in the practice to get to the advanced series, do cool poses, and have nice looking abs (or something like that)

I know, I know. My second reason is completely based in ego and not based in compassion.

I also find myself getting distracted mid practice too. Gazing off in between poses etc. I can't really afford a yoga studio membership, so it's easier to get distracted when I'm doing it by my lonesome.

Does anyone have any advice with this or personal experience they are willing to share? I want to move into the compassionate, mindful, and meditative focus that is the true intent of ashtanga yoga, but I'm having some trouble getting there.

Edit: yall rock thank you for giving me such helpful insights to chew on as a newer practioner. Much love and appreciation <3
