Started my practice again today after a long break :)

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 01:26 PM PST

I've been going through some crazy intense life changes over the past few months, and sadly haven't had a consistent practice going since around August/September. I've tried to get back into it but ultimately wasn't able to stick to it. Today was different for some reason, I didn't struggle at all with my mind/body connection or breath work and was really surprised at my fitness level given I haven't been moving my body much (cold weather mostly). I did a short but sweet 25 minute vinyasa practice and it was lovely! Definitely inspired me to keep it up for now. Anyway just wanted to share! Any tips on getting back into the routine are welcome :)

[COMP] How it’s going -> how it started. Forearm stand progress over 9 months. Plus bonus headstand splits and drills that help me get there. Lots of power yoga flows and classes help me get there too.

Does anyone else find that their ability to do certain poses varies daily?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 08:31 PM PST

I noticed this today and wanted to see if it was common for other people too!

In lizard pose yesterday I had a lot harder time easing into the stretch but today I eased in a lot better! but my upper arms and neck felt discomfort. I normally can balance fairly well in half camel (lunge-like variant) but today I was wobbly all over the place.

I feel like some days certain poses are harder to be in/transition into than others.

    108 sun salutations

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:53 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I have casually practiced for years and just finished a 30 day journey, planning to keep going. I am very amateur.

I want to work up to doing an 108 sun salutation practice. I am wondering if I am setting too big of a goal? What do you think would be a realistic timeline?

Thanks for the advice and peace be with you πŸ™

Can an inner voice that is obscured become clear again through the practice of yoga?

Anyone else write out their yoga sessions?

What do you think your yoga will be when your physical body can no longer perform the asana you have worked to perfect?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:03 PM PST

Because of age or illness or injury, at some point we will no longer be able to move through flashy asana as our practice. What will your yoga practice be then?

    Om shanti, friends.

Best poses while recovering from a herniated disc?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST

I've hurt my back. And I plan to listen to my body and be extremely careful and patient, but does anyone have any advice?

Background info : I've recently picked up yoga and I picked it back up with no effort. It felt like more of a choreography, as I started up the old routines from college a few weeks ago.

How did I injure myself? I sat in the back seat of the car. Maybe it all started with doing so much body stretching, and then getting cramped in the car for hours was a bad idea? I also have hereditary back issues.

I seem to have full range of motion, except I can't stand up straight. I can get myself on and off the toilet, can get my toddler in and out of the tub for examples.

[COMP] New yogi here. I have pain in my feet when I sit like this. I suspect it’s because of how I sit at my computer desk. So, any video with a flow involving this position is a wash for me. Any advice on stretches I could do to help make this possible for me?

Pain after backbending, what could it be and self-care tips?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 11:18 AM PST

Please note I am booked in to see a physiotherapist about this, just wanted opinions/others' experience if they've done a similar thing.

I hurt my back today in a backbend, whilst holding the extension. I think I 'dumped' into the lower spine as I felt a sharp pain in one side of my lower back, with a feeling of compression. I came out of the backbend and now my sacral area on that side hurts, and I've got pain down the back of leg. A mild backend i.e just standing leaning back a bit is causing a sensation of tightness and pain in my lower on this side now, like my spine is 'jamming'. I've previously experienced a sore lower back after backbending before, but that was bilateral and just a normal muscle soreness type of pain, not sharp/pinching and radiating into the leg. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm worried I've gone too far and I've compressed the lower back, possibly irritiating a nerve, or down something to the SI joint. What should I be doing to help myself (obviously no more backbends!) before my physiotherapy appointment? Thanks!

what are benefits of longer sessions?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:03 PM PST

i've been doing yoga every day for a month for 30-35 minutes each day, in three 10-15 minute sessions. but i think (time-permitting of course) i want to try doing longer (30-40 minute) sessions once or twice a day. i know it depends on the person, but are there any benefits (mental or physical) of doing longer sessions less often instead of shorter sessions more often?

How I re-introduce yoga into my life (A little motivation)

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:25 AM PST

I've been practicing yoga for 5 years on and off. And the offs can be really demotivating. I make a lot of progress when I put my mind to it. I start feeling great physically and mentally. Then I stop. Why the heck do I do that, I dont know.

So its been a couple of months since I was in my last devoted yoga phase. And my body cries for help nowadays. I know its time to start again. After such a long break even lifting my arm can feel challenging. And my head-stand capable body feels a little offended. If there is ONE good thing about taking a break, it is this one. Because it challenges your ego about where you should be and where you are right now. And I believe your competetion should always be where you are in this moment, not the past. (I'm not even talking about where others are)

So, I've just made a decision to do yoga regularly again. I find this class by Travis Elliot really helpful to remind my body what it feels like to move again. It's kind of mellow but also active. So I want to share it with you because I know a lot of people find it challenging to get motivated after a break. Here is the video:

    https://youtu.be/soF4AfV_b_o

Go easy on yourself and start slowly. Soon enough you will find yourself in shavasana thinking "Why the heck do I stop doing yoga?"

How strong can you get practising yoga?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 06:43 AM PST

I have been practising yoga everyday since late December 2020. I do YGA at the moment but plan to move to more advanced routines once I feel more confident (maybe in six months or so). I do not practise any other type of exercise due sciatica problems, but I do try to reach my daily 10000 steps and I do occasional Zumba sessions.

My question is, how strong can you really get practising yoga only? I would like to do some weightlifting but I don't want to aggravate my sciatica (main reason why I started doing yoga). I already feel some definition in my arms for all the practises I have been doing but I wonder if people have got any good muscle definition doing only yoga for strength. I have also started to watch what I eat and my protein intake because I know that diet is very important to build muscle.

    Thanks for the advice!

    Anyone here tried John Benton?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:42 AM PST

John benton, I think, is a perfect supplement to yoga if you need some variety but don't want to lift heavy or do HIIT. It's low impact but you actually sweat profusely. I have been working it into my routine and love that I don't need a lot of equipment. Curious if anyone here has tried his workouts and your thoughts?

TUNE iNto the 8 limbs of YOGA ➰ first steps

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 11:13 AM PST

Love, happiness & the excitement to keep flowing in this beautiful life journey are the ONLY EMOTiONS I feed in these unbalanced collective times! YOU choose what thoughts invade your mind space on the daily! i'd rather keep them LiGHT then heavy! The lighter and free your thoughts get, the faster you will achieve the art of flow in meditation and you will naturally tune into the 8 limbs of yoga as it becomes a lifestyle!

basic question, but not covered by the FAQ!

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 08:53 AM PST

Hello! I'm a beginner and I've been having a lot of trouble with forward folds, or any other pose involving flexibility of the core. Can anyone point me towards some methods, poses or resources on how to gain flexibility in this area? Or how to fully "wake up" my core with a morning routine?
