The nature of the ego is to be dissatisfied. Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:59 AM PDT The ego can never be fulfilled, that's what keeps it going; dissatisfaction is it's nature. So trying to fulfil the ego's desires will just make you suffer, that's why the Buddha said desire leads to suffering because only the ego can want things. The ego is basically like a bottomless container, no matter what you put in it and how much you put in, it is still never going to be enough. I see this all the time in the world. It's the reason why people break up and get back together again or why people get divorced so often and some end up getting married several times. This is all because their choices and desires were motivated by the ego, and the ego can't really be genuinely happy or at peace because that is it's nature. It lives in a state of constant dissatisfaction and desire, and even when it's desires are fulfilled, it's only a matter of time before it wants something else because the old thing doesn't make it happy anymore. Any "happiness" the ego experiences is always caused by something external like money, relationships, other people's approval and so on. And as long as happiness is caused by something external it is very fragile and it's not even really happiness. Basically, the happiness the ego experiences is kind of like the relief you feel when you've been tensing your muscles for a while and then you suddenly relax them. When the ego wants something it is basically in a state of tension because it believes it won't be happy until it gets whatever it wants (and whatever it wants is always in the future so it can't be in the present), and then when it gets what it wants it finally relaxes (temporarily) and this sudden lack of constant tension is what it interprets as happiness. So don't try to satisfy the ego's desires because it can't be done, that will just lead to suffering. [link] [comments] |
You are not what your thoughts tell you. Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:11 AM PDT What happens when that thought disappears and is replaced by something else? Even if for a split second you think of something different, were you not yourself than? Thoughts come and go and are replaced, even if you get hung up on a specific thought, another one will eventually replace it. The thought "Im worthless" is no more true than "I'm a giraffe". You don't have to be defined by your past or what your mind says about you currently. You are enough as you are, imperfections and all. Treat yourself kindly, be your own best friend and give yourself a huge mental hug. [link] [comments] |
How to distinguish refocusing your attention and thinking about refocusing your attention? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT I feel like I have a hard time feeling the difference between the two. [link] [comments] |
I want...nothing? Am I broken? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:49 PM PDT I'm 27 years old. I'm a security guard. Have been for 5 years. I like not having to interact with people or work too hard for a company. I don't really care to do anything or be anything-I see myself simply as passing through. I have no intentions on trying to be rich, or own anything really-besides the necessities. I really feel like I am noone-identity-less. I see people in my country (usa) and they are striving, and working, and hustling and all I really want to do is sit in a park, go for walks, eat healthy, workout and just...be. It's odd. I think have experienced an ego death as I really just see myself as a conscious animal that was plopped into a culture and society without any say and I am told I am supposed to want things and be things but I simply don't want anything but peace and quiet and the few things I mentioned above. Don't get me wrong, I'm not like inherently lazy. I deadlift 405lbs, I have visible abs, I workout a lot, I eat clean and healthy, I track my food, I get up at 5am on my off days when I don't work nights, I am relatively sober...I mean, you wouldn't look at me and think that's a stereotypical lazy dumb security guard. You'd think holy shit this guy hustles, he must be extremely successful. But I'm not. Quite the opposite. And I have tried to be, but it always felt so damn meaningless. I find myself asking why? Why do I want to pursue? For materials? Idc about material things. For a woman, bc a mans status and resources will be important for their mating-but again, I don't care. We just seem like monkeys-like I should go earn and have nice stuff so the female monkeys will want to breed with me? I'm good? Idk. Idk if anyone ever experienced something like this, call it a dark night of the soul or depression or enlightenment or ego death-but I really just feel totally insignificant and there is no way I'll or anyone will ever be significant no matter how rich or how many buildings have your name on them-I simply don't care and it doesn't matter. I feel like a human watching ants on an anthill. They're just insignificant. I feel like an ant among ants just doing what "ants" aka "evolved monkeys" do-and I just can't get myself BACK to caring or being in my ego or flowing with life I just feel like an observer at all times just roaming around aimlessly waiting for this experience to end-everything truly does seem pointless and empty and I think it is because I internally just have no sense of self or ego. Can anyone relate, help, or atleast talk to me? Preferably someone wise and intelligent who has experienced this or has knowledge of psychology, spirituality, meditation and the likes... Which free guided meditation app do you recommend? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:04 AM PDT I am new to meditation and would like to use an app that is free and offers a good guided meditation experience. It's best if it is time bound. Any help will be appreciated! I don't know if it helps but my focus is on reducing anxiety and achieving mindfulness. [link] [comments] |
i can’t seem to have my eyes closed the whole time while i’m meditating Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:51 PM PDT i haven't been meditating for long but i have had some interesting sessions. the only problem is that while i'm deep into a meditation, my eyes kind of open-not all the way, but enough to disrupt the session. i've tried having something to cover my eyes but it felt like i couldn't fully focus or get any downloads. it's kind of annoying especially when i'm really in deep. does anyone have this problem? or have any advice to give me? thank you in advance [link] [comments] |
Am I misunderstanding meditation? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:15 PM PDT I'm very new to this, been watching lots of videos and reading lots to learn more about meditation and it's benefits. Being very productivity minded (as a busy student) it's hard for me to prioritize meditation as it's just.. doing nothing in a sense. While you try to sleep at night isn't that the same thing? Focusing on your body, on your breath, noting the thoughts that come up, trying to clear the mind, all things that happen when we try to sleep right? When I simplify and overthink meditation like this it makes me want to spend less time on it. Am I missing something? What makes meditation worthwhile for you? Some clarification and motivation would be so appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Books on personal meditation experiences? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:11 PM PDT I've ready plenty of books on meditation techniques and Buddhism. But what I'm really craving is exposure to first person accounts of meditation experiences and spiritual development. [link] [comments] |
Is it a bad Idea to meditate if you have mental problems? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:51 AM PDT I have bipolar disorder and have had psychosis. Can meditation be dangerous? [link] [comments] |
I Think about meditation this way. Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:53 PM PDT When you sit. Death is the absence of all motion in the body. There is no telling what happens to the mind. Literally there is no current way of knowing. Meditation. The act of sitting with nothing but your mind is the closest thing anybody living can ever get to any form of death. In an argument against the meditation=mindfulness cult, meditation is the closest thing anybody can have to experiencing life without life. But in the same way that a turkey is never just a dinner, but also a bird, a vulture, a bowling score or a country, so too meditation is never experienced as just one thing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:51 PM PDT I have been meditating for a year and a half now and I have noticed a big change in my thoughts but something I struggle to let go of is anger . When I feel the rage building I try to hard to fight it . I try to observe my thoughts but I just can't let go. It seems like a part of me wants to not be angry but another part wants to succumb to the anger because it feels good with adrenaline and my social anxiety doesn't exist when I am angry. After the initial burst of anger my inner dialogue turns on its self and creates negative self talk , I feel shame and guilt and more angry after the outburst causing a circle of anger and negative self talk. It seems like my mind is at war I just want to be on the same page with who I want to be and who I am. How do I change my thought patterns , I know how to observe my thoughts but it's sure gets old observing negative self talk. I want to have more gratitude and less anxiety/ anger in my life . Meditation is an extremely personal thing to me. Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:13 PM PDT I feel like there is alot of goal posting going on on this sub. It doesn't actually make sense. People are trying to intimidate new meditaters into thinking that the only way to meditate is through mindfulness and awareness of the moment. This puts me extremely off kilter. My entire adult life I've sat. I've considered it meditation. And it is. I've sat and I've felt the universe and I've been allowed access to many new thoughts that I would have never had had I not meditated. Had I not sat. With my eyes shut and my mind silent. This idea, that seems to spread like wild fire, that meditation=mindfulness and all the other things that happen while you sit are not meditation. It's like telling someone that you are only running if you know how to grip the ground with your toes. That it isn't running unless you are using your every effort to battle the ground to your hight in your next stride. To battle gravity like it is your worst enemy. That only that and nothing else is running. That only mindfulness and nothing else is meditation. Get off of it. Meditation is an action. It leads to all kinds of mindsets. So many you really couldn't name them all. To say that you are only meditating if you are practicing mindfulness. Yet you can only practice mindfulness unless you sit quietly with only yourself? You are not meditating properly until you have a complete form of control of your own existence. Doesn't mean your life is going the way you want. Means you are actively understanding the control in your life. The control is you. Sit. Continue being awesome. You are only and always human. Be it. [link] [comments] |

Feeling of euphoria and intense happiness after meditation Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:46 PM PDT Hi, So I have been meditating on and off for a while now but i have never been consistent enough. For example i would meditate for a few days and then stop for months and do it all over again.I have noticed everytime i meditate i feel really happy and excited afterwards. It almost feels like a high.I feel so confident, happy and a totally different person. It usually lasts until the next day and fades away if i stop meditating. Is this normal? When I become deeply mindfull, I get random images from my youth? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 04:14 PM PDT So when I focus a lot during the day on my task, some random old memorie comes up. This has never happened before I started with mindfulness and meditation, and memories are often really interesting moments that I couldn't recall even if I tried, but are now coming up without my awareness... Did anyone had similar experiance and maybe has some reasoning behind it? 🤔 Is it a bad thing? Sorry for broken English and thanks in advane :) [link] [comments] |
Gratitude meditation preferences? Ideas? Advice? Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PDT So I have been spending 15-20 minutes a night trying to cultivate gratitude. I've tried using guided meditations on YouTube, and also have just tried setting a timer and doing it myself. I usually rotate between the two. The goal isn't really completely "law of attraction" oriented, but I would love to be able to manifest things into my life. I'm more focused, however, on improving my overall mental health and view on life. I've been somewhat of a negative person for years, and would like to get into a habit of focusing on the good things around me. My problem is that it often feels forced, and even though I can logically think of the things I'm lucky to have in life, it can at times be hard for me to truly "feel" grateful. Anyone else doing anything like this? I'm looking for any tips or advice I can get. Do you use videos/guided meditations, or do you do it by yourself? Any sort of method or strategy you use? Any help is gravely appreciated🙂 Thanks friends! [link] [comments] |
How to be okay with unpleasant noises Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:09 PM PDT If the vegan restaurant is busy or not, I'm happy. It means more people are eating vegan. Or I don't have to wait in line. If my company works out or not, I'm happy. I look forward to working at the company or traveling for a while. If it is raining or not, I'm happy. I'm looking forward to trying out my new raincoat. Or enjoying the sun. When someone has their dog barking at midnight or hours at a time, how can I be happy? I feel sad for the dog and it also make me alert. I have meditated on this for many many hours, and I can't see how to look at it from a positive perspective. Guidance on this would be helpful. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:55 PM PDT Today as I was just sitting in my car and meditating with my eyes closed, my eyes started rapidly moving up and down. Sometimes together and sometimes one at a time and sometimes together but in opposite directions. But it was only up and down and not side to side. This was overwhelming and I kinda lost focus because of that. Thoughts started coming in and I was trying to figure out what it just experienced. I also realized that I'm scared of going deeper. I saw some way older posts about this but I couldn't find a conclusive answer so hoping someone would have more details about it now. Was what I experienced REM? [link] [comments] |
Guided meditations or hypnotherapy to release romantic attachments and to move past relationships Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:32 PM PDT I'm having a really difficult time letting go of a romantic relationship, I have been clinging to my partner more and more as he is pulling away. The relationship has become really painful for us both and it would be best for both of us if I were able to just let it go. I have tried meditating on our past memories (good and bad) and then placing the memories into a flower, and letting them wash down a stream once they feel 'finished'. Are there any guided meditations you have found useful for sorting through these types of feelings? Thank you [link] [comments] |

The impact of caffeine and poor nutrition on meditation Posted: 29 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PDT How do caffeine/coffee and poor quality nutrition choices impact meditation and mindfulness in general? The more I sit, the more I realise I need to look after myself holistically; movement, getting outside, not spending too long in front of a computer/phone, good sleep, good food etc. [link] [comments] |
