I had an unfortunate experience while teaching online yoga. Want to share it to keep my fellow teachers safe! (Sexual content)

I teach virtual yoga classes via zoom twice a week and I once in a blue moon get a black box student that just shares their name (I'm sure y'all have seen em) well this happened in my class a couple of days ago and I taught as normal. When I was about 40 minutes into teaching my hour long class I look up at the screen to check in on students and the black box turned into a man masturbating. I feel beyond violated and feel like I am scared to share my practice virtually and online as much as I love to share the yoga. For all of my fellow teachers make sure you up security for your online classes, change passcodes frequently and have students email/DM you to join. I hope that we're all able to be safe through this online yoga world we currently live in. I am woman and have experienced similar things throughout my life but feeling like the safety of my practice and teaching have been invaded leaves me feeling devastated.

Yoga teachers who don't talk too much?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 02:55 AM PST

Heyllo, sorry if this had been asked before! Can anyone recommend any YouTube yoga teachers with vinyassa classes who don't talk constantly during practice? It feels like all the ones I've come across just won't stop talking and it's probably the most frustrating thing ever. I love the poses and flows but it really doesn't make it enjoyable. I did a few with no prompts what so ever and it was wonderful but Im still at a level where I need some guidance. I do appreciate that some people need the constant reminders and help but I find it impossible to focus and quiet my brain and I really need to recently. No hate on the talkier classes or anything! Just, in the last few weeks especially, I just need something a bit quieter. Thank you! (Edit for clarity) (edit: I have so many awesome suggestions thank you all so much!! I haven't been this excited about practice in months. Yer the best!!)

Beginner trying to combat anxiety and depression

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 06:26 AM PST

I'm trying to get into yoga and meditation more as I'm realizing the stresses of life are starting to eat me alive. I tried a little bit the other day and it felt great to loosen up instead of tightening up to my anxiety. My anxiety/depression recently has affected me physically (I feel my anxiety in my stomach and sometimes my arms and legs feel so heavy/tired after not even doing that much). Mindfulness is always something I worked towards, but now I want to use the tools of yoga to help me down this road.

Yoga for neck and upper back

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:36 AM PST

I deal a lot with tension headaches that evolve into migraines. The best way to combat this is working on my neck and upper back. I was hoping this sub could help me with your favourite YouTube sessions that do deep stretching of the neck and back and also videos for strengthening the neck.

    Yoga and Spine Problems

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 06:00 PM PST

I have practiced Ashtanga yoga in the past but 'fell of the wagon' a while ago. About 2 years ago, I found out that I had stenosis in my spine. One of the discs was compressing a nerve, so I developed numbness in my left foot and calf and had to start using a walker.

I've had a spinal fusion operation. I'm fused from my neck to the thoracic spine. I really want to get back to yoga because it helps with my mental health, and there have been a lot of changes for me in the last 2 years. My mobility has improved and I can stand for longer periods of time. However, I'm worried about poses that involve the back. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there safe modifications, and where could I find them? I'm not at a studio now.

    Thanks in advance!

    Headphone suggestions for yoga?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 04:53 PM PST

Hi! I'm looking for some suggestions for good Bluetooth headphones/earbuds that will stay in my ears while I'm both running and doing yoga. Looking for something cheap as well ($40 max, under 30 is preferred). I'm not sure if I just have weirdly shaped ears but it's always been a struggle to keep wired earbuds in my ears (plus it's an inconvenience to be connected to a phone while doing yoga)

I do yoga outside when I can and occasionally in noisy areas.

    Thanks!

    What sensations are normal?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:57 PM PST

I've been doing yoga for a while now and feel much better in my body, but I've noticed some weird sensations.

    1. In head to knee pose, my knee will sometimes shift back. There's no pain but it feels kind of unnatural. I'm going to do it with less intensity in the future, but does anyone know what this is?

    2. I feel sensations almost like I'm getting taller, mostly along my upper neck and spine. I don't mean my posture, it feels like a tingling inside of the spine slightly. In plow pose I can feel this a lot more. It isn't painful and actually feels good, but I've never had this feeling before. Is this anything dangerous? It feels like my spine is being elongated.

    Yoga and abs

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:24 AM PST

So I try to be as mindful as possible when doing my asanas but I've found that I have a hard time engaging my core (and the few times I've done it my postures are balanced and stronger) cause it messes up my breathing rhythm.

Is there a way I can keep it engaged without it affecting my breath (which is the #1 thing I try to pay attention to)??

    Popping in lower hamstrings

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:51 PM PST

    Hi guys,

Whenever im doing reverse pigeon stretch, i get this strange feeling in my lower hamstrings, seems like popping or something similar. Have to align my leg properly to get over this "bump", so i can fully stretch. I dont have any popping in my hamstrings when i do hamstring stretches like touch the toes ( or in normal day to day life ). So i have a feeling its something to do with rotating my leg. I was unsuccessful at googling it, so hoping someone can steer me to the right direction. Thanks

    Balance

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:29 PM PST

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some ideas to help with balance.

I'm a runner and former long-distance biker so I'm fairly confident I have the musculature to be able to do basic balance poses, but even after doing yoga for 3-4 years now, I still struggle with any balance pose where my hands aren't on the ground.

Like tree pose, for example, I wobble like crazy, and have lots of discomfort and pain almost immediately, then have to modify within a few seconds? Other than modifying time and time again which is getting me no where, are there any specific things that can help with balance or some of the more basic poses that require it.

Lesser Known Yoga Type Video Recommendations?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PST

I've always wanted to try various styles of yoga. Can anyone recommend YT or other online videos featuring styles not commonly practiced in the United States at this time (Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, Yin)?

Lost interest and feeling bad about it

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:05 AM PST

I used to do yin yoga to complement my other physically demanding sport. I would do it daily for 30-45 minutes (2.5 years total).

Then lockdown hit and I stopped doing my other sport - this made yoga my main form of excercise. I started doing Vinyasa on daily basis and loved it. It was live classes 2 times a week and recorded sessions other days of the week.

It gave me a sense of calm and made me lose a lot of weight ( I was eating well too ).

This went on for 10 months. But then I suddenly lost interest. I have been trying to get back to it but I can't do it for more than 20 minutes without feeling bored and finding the practice repetitive. I kind of let myself go and trying to figure why I lost interest and can not get myself to do it for even 20 minutes.

Any of you have been through this? How did you get back on track?

    Recovering from ankle injury

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:27 AM PST

Greetings! I sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago and I'm now ready for gentle range of motion and stretching work. I'm still quite overweight, so my usual vinyasa yoga with lots of downward dog, forward bends, warriors, etc is going to be too much weight bearing. Does anyone have YouTube recommendations? Thanks!
