Break the cycle of low-self esteem - instead of focusing on yourself, focus your awareness on others, your surroundings and activities

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 06:17 AM PDT

Self-esteem is based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can sometimes feel really difficult to change. How you view yourself can be a huge factor to your wellbeing - it can affect how kindly you treat yourself, your decision making and whether you feel confident enough to try new things. But our past experiences can distort how we view ourselves, leading us into a destructive cycle which can lead to suffering.

Low self esteem leads to negative thoughts about ourselves, which leads to unhappiness and high levels of anxiety, which makes it difficult for us to do the things we want (like build relationships), which leads to us blaming ourselves and beating ourselves up, which leads to more low self esteem - and so the cycle continues. The cycle revolves around the negative beliefs we have about ourselves, many of which we may not be fully aware of - for example feeling like you're unlovable.

So how can we break the cycle? The first step is awareness. It can be tough to listen to our negative self talk rather than distracting ourselves from it. Initially it might be painful to hold these thoughts in our awareness, but it's helpful to remind ourselves that we are not our thoughts, instead seeing our consciousness as a sky that thoughts pass through and then disappear. Noticing the self-critical thought arise, pass through your awareness and leave without judgement is a key first step.

We can also address the process of analysis of the past. Going round and round on perceived mistakes that we've made doesn't really help, so we need to train our awareness a little bit every day so that when that process of reflection and analysis begins we can choose to ground ourselves in the present moment instead through meditation, yoga, walking or any activity that you enjoy. That isn't to say that reflection can't be helpful - but being constantly lost in analysis can't bring us happiness and I'd invite you to limit it as much as possible.

Finally, we can adjust our focus when we're trying new things - lets say you're getting out there and you've joined a book club. The cycle of low self esteem might be steering us to towards concentrating on ourselves, am I talking too much, am not talking enough, did I dress appropriately, are my thoughts on the book silly etc. This is really understandable so make sure you're being kind and understanding to yourself - almost everyone has similar thoughts when meeting a new group of people.

But again, you can notice the thoughts let them pass through and most importantly, shift your focus from yourself to the other people. Listening to what they have to say, noticing your surroundings. You don't need to say a great deal for your presence to be valuable.

Trying too hard to be in the moment ?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 08:35 AM PDT

Am I trying too hard to focus on the present? I'm CONSTANTLY trying to focus on something with my vision to make sure I'm in the present moment, but I think this might be stressing me out and just contributing to more thinking. Should being in the present moment be something that comes naturally or should I be actively focusing on something at all times ?

    Need some help pls

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 09:47 AM PDT

I try to meditate everyday but i feel strange everytime I try. when I try to slow down my body I can't do it, I always need to move my body obsessively. And when I open my eyes again I feel really bad and definitely more 'active' and stressed than before. I think maybe this could be a result of my anxiety. Please somebody tell me something to improve my meditation

    Lessened facial asymmetry

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 05:26 AM PDT

21 year old guy, got into meditation a few years ago and have been having a practice ever since. It has had immeasurable benefits for me when done. Focusing on my breathing, I started noticing tension in many places in my body. I've been able to let it go on command more and more.

Much of the tension was located in my face I noticed, I've always thought I just grew up to have one eye lid and cheekbone be raised more, however through my mediation practice and relieving tension, asymmetry has started to disappear!

It's amazing how much we don't notice because it has been there for so long that meditation can shed light on.

I started with 3 minute breathing exercise. It’s my 43 day, averaging 20 minute daily meditation now. Mindfulness and becoming aware of my thoughts gave me this power to separate myself from my thoughts. I have started to see that how I am not an extension of my thoughts.

A meditation video I made with binaural beats and chants/mantras with animations and music to help assist people transistion into a "3rd eye open" state, I put my heart and soul ( and a lot of time ) into this, I hoppe you enjoy!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 03:26 AM PDT

Suitable for anyobdy, No specific beliefs required.
Aum Namah Shivaya is the most powerful hindu mantra, combined with theta and delta binaural beats, this guide is intended to help open ones 3rd eye, connect with Lord Shiva and experience transcendental states.

Link to the meditation. Headphones are essential.
If you experience crackling, try turning the volume down, there are subsonic frequencies that may be louder than you expect causing it.

After a lot of research I have found the most effective tones for inducing thetawaves, which when paired with group chanting, traditional music and digital sound engineering produces a very interesting experience.

Set a nice space for yourself, put headphones on, watch the animation until the "aum namah shivaya" chant starts at around 3 mins. The binaural beats during the intro are designed to induce medatitive and energised mental states. You don't even have to meditate to achieve an altered state, just watch the animation and listen.

Why does staring at a fixed point help me stop thinking and calm the mind?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 05:26 AM PDT

I just noticed this and was wondering if anyone had an explanation. If I move my eyes even slightly, the mind races again!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 10:32 AM PDT

hey everyone! I'm new to meditation, and I'm not quite sure where to start. I have done few minutes of a very basic type which was just seating down and not interacting with my thoughts. I was thinking about trying some sort of guided meditation now, so do you have any recommendations? thanks a lot in advance

Is it okay to take a day off from mediation?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 06:33 AM PDT

Should I go to college to become a meditation/yoga teacher?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 10:16 AM PDT

Sorry if this doesn't belong here. I really have a passion for helping others become more present and feeling welcomed. I want to work towards getting my yoga cert and a certification in meditation teaching. I am 20 years old and have been in and out of community college (mostly taking music courses just to learn more) I have always disliked formal education and do much better when learning the things i'm drawn to. I really want to open a meditation/yoga/sound healing studio one day but have no idea where to start. Should I go back to university and get a degree is Psych? Do I need to have a degree to be taken seriously in this industry. Or would it be more beneficial for me to practice my craft and travel for a couple years? I know no one can give me the answers but if anyone has any advice that would be very helpful!

Sorry again for putting this post here if there is a better subreddit to post my question in I will take this one down. Thank you :)

Meditate with Inner Peace & Soul

Is it possible to separate location in space with sensation?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 05:45 AM PDT

Something I've notice while meditating is that even with eyes closed, it seems impossible for me to separate sensation with a location in space of where it is occurring relative to my brain. If I feel my feet, my brain will add location data so I have this mental intuition almost of where exactly my feet are in space. Is it possible that this "sense" is too inherent to separate for humans, or is it's possible to feel sensation without any sense of location attached?
