How to quickly improve your mental mood: drink plenty of water ASAP!

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:33 PM PDT

While this is not meditation related it is mental health related.

I think I heard somewhere that a large percentage of population is suffering from dehydration.

I discovered that when I chug a solid amount of water my mood instantly improves. Due to electrolytes maybe? I don't know but it seem to be working.

Give it a shot right now - drink some water. Not sips, mind you, but a like a glass or half a glass (if the glass is big). 5 gulps at least.

Let me know how you feel after doing this! :)

PS: There is such a thing as water poisoning which causes death. Don't exaggerate. Refrain from trying this if you suffer from certain medical conditions.

Obviously - don't be a dummy and try to drink gallons of water or forcing yourself. Check out this overhydration article.

    Meditation literally changed my life.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:11 AM PDT

I went from being sad and depressed because I thought I didn't have a life, to realising that I am life. I genuinely think that if everyone in the world meditated, the world would be a heaven on earth.

I used to do things as a means to an end, now whatever action I'm taking is an end in itself. For example, I make music and whenever I would work on an album I would always be concerned about the outcome and about people listening or not listening to it. But now I don't really care because I've realised that when I am fully present while doing something, I enjoy the process so much that I don't worry about the outcome. I still like to share my songs though, it's just that now I'm unattached to the outcome.

This week I decided to write a song inspired by this way of living, and I'm really happy with how it turned out so much so that the process of making it was an end in itself, but I still wanted to share it with people who might resonate with it. It's called 'growing up'.

Anyone here using Sam Harris' meditation app, Waking Up? I can't say enough good things about it. Not least because it's also 100% FREE!

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:21 PM PDT

Have a gander at wakingup.com scroll down to the fine print section to get a free account.

I've been using it most days for over a year now, and the content on it is phenomenal. The meditations sessions themselves start out pretty basic, but gradually introduce metta practise and other exercises.

Once you've been eased in a bit and hopefully have more focus of mind, Some Dzogchen methods such as the "pointing out instruction" are introduced to try and help users recognise the nature of mind.

Did I mention that the content is excellent? There are also a load of very well curated 'theory' talks to explain the general purpose of meditation alongside other wisdom nuggets. I'm very impressed with these, they're all very well done and I can confidently say that they're all worth listening to at least once. No gristle here.

Here's one of the theory lessons as a taster. It explains how the app is different from most other meditation resources:

    https://youtu.be/tE4oEPqlch4

The app is great for both newcomers and veterans. Even if you've been meditating for years I'm sure you'll learn something new!

And Mr. Harris has said on his podcast that if your free 1 year subscription ends, you can simply ask for another and they'll grant it, no questions asked! I really love this payment scheme :p

Well, I hope this helps someone and that the mods won't delete the post for advertising or what not. I get nothing from this post, I'd just like to share an app that has helped me immensely.

And please chime in and let me know what you think of the app if you have been using it yourself! One downside I can think of is that the app isn't super well polished and feels a bit like an iOS app import. But hey, it's free!

    Immersion vs Detachment

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:50 PM PDT

[After consistent study of Eastern philosophy, mindfulness practice, and yoga over the past 4 years or so, I have become more aware of a dichotomy between immersion and detachment as it plays out in my experience. I am uncertain how to integrate it at this time, and this post serves as somewhat of a journal entry to help work through it. I welcome thoughts from all and advice from experienced Buddhists and meditators who may have gone through a similar stage in their practice.]

One perspective we can take on mindfulness is to see it as a process of detachment from that which we are immersed in. To use more analytical terms, we can say that mindfulness is the process of objectifying our subjective identifications: we shine the light of our awareness on what we thought was an "I" and convert it to an "it". For example, if we are under the impression that our subconscious thought-chatter is the self, we shine our awareness onto the thoughts and we see that they could not possibly contain us. We must be something more, something we cannot see so plainly. Repeatedly we continue this process of digging into the self, and we see that the very act of witnessing the "self" has revealed it as "not-self". Again: we have detached ourselves from that which we were once immersed in.

This process has been overall beneficial for me, and I want to emphasize that I am at a very specific impasse in my practice, so as not to discourage the practice for beginners.

I have recently put into question how healthy it is to commit so heavily to this path of detachment. On the one hand, mindfulness absolves us from becoming lost in false identity, and the suffering we cause ourselves and others as we merge with our objects and defend them with our lives. On the other hand, nestled between the life of objects and a still distant enlightenment, is this state of a knowing dissatisfaction. Knowing that the ego and its compulsions will not ever satisfy and knowing that the light of divinity is not yet warm enough to sustain through the cold winter.

There is a dichotomy between immersion and detachment that has become transparent to me; at any moment we can choose to lose ourselves in this life of rapturous pleasure in an ignorant intensity, or take a step back from the temptuous river with a knowing grace and wisdom. This is a choice we are given: to lean into form or lean into emptiness. Hardly ever do we fall to one extreme, but leaning we are, as we take the masculine or feminine stance toward life in any given moment, and while mindfulness urges us to lean toward the detached extreme, I feel that life is not at its fullest without an integration of both. I often wonder if I have leaned too far.

When we watch a movie, we enjoy ourselves most when we have lost ourselves in it, when we have identified with the characters and the plot, and we feel every emotion, every surprise, every buzzing high and crushing low. We do not enjoy the movie if we are constantly reminding ourselves that we are watching a movie. We are not fooled into believing the actors are real people, sure, or that the plot is a real story, and therefore it cannot hurt us. We have gleaned truth in our detachment, but what have we done with this truth, really, but destroy such a beautiful illusion?

I believe that enlightenment is the point at which we can maintain recognition that we are actors in this movie and yet be able to fully immerse ourselves in our role without dissolving into it --accept that the condition of life and death can be no other way and the only thing we can change is our perspective. With this realization, we see through the need for ascetic discipline or ritual or practice altogether and simply live life through the eyes of a fearless Self.

I am not yet at a point where I can hold the perspective of detachment without destroying a joyful immersion, or hold the perspective of immersion without losing myself in the whirlwind of life. I am not sure if the path of intense mindfulness is an ultimately satisfactory one, and yet I can imagine no other real option at this point. Sometimes I wish I could live a life of ignorant bliss, not so committed to this path of dispelling illusion.

Then I observe that this wish is a narrative I have created and identified with to stoke my emotions, and my story dissolves. I feel calm, I feel wise, I feel detached. I feel dissatisfied, I feel indifferent, I feel alone.

    You can do it

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:02 AM PDT

Many people struggle to continue meditating. But I will say it to you, you can do it!

    And here is some motivation.

Planet earth is full of beautiful wonders. Actually, planet earth is a beautiful wonder. And the stars you can see at night, you know it's beautiful. So do you want to experience this paradise? Then just be here now and enjoy. To be here now, to hang out in the present moment is meditation.

Maybe you're planning to buy a ticket for a flight to go on holiday. But meditation (being present) is the ticket to paradise. A paradise called planet earth.

Sometimes a sanga (group of people) can also help you. So here is a telegram channel in which you will get a daily reminder to just rest / stop for a moment.

And now we are talking about paradise, a little bit more about paradise.

    I see trees of green

    Red roses too

    I see them bloom

    For me and you

    And I think to myself

    What a wonderful world

    I see skies of blue

    And clouds of white

    The bright blessed day

    The dark sacred night

    And I think to myself

    What a wonderful world

    The colors of the rainbow

    So pretty in the sky

    Are also on the faces

    Of people going by

    I see friends shaking hands

    Saying how do you do

    They're really saying

    I love you

Did you all know we've been programmed since we could talk?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:26 PM PDT

Or probably since we could listen. You even hear it in the media, Rich kids Project kids even Islander kids. Maybe you related to one of these, but we all know the stero type of each of them. Whats the difference? Only their environment, at a young age it is natural to fit yourself into a little box that looks exactly like those around us. This can mean the best of souls born into dark environments may never live up to what they might be. Drop a message or a comment what you think

How to stop intrusive thoughts during meditation?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:57 PM PDT

It's like that whole 'when you try not to think of a pink elephant, you think of one' thing. I struggle with anxiety, and intrusive thoughts that play on my fears often occur in my mind. A new thing that's been happening is when I'm meditating, my mind will almost purposely think intrusive thoughts based on what I don't want/things I'm afraid of and it's putting me off meditation completely. Anyone have any tips for this :(

[video] I sit in meditation 40 mins straight

    Posted: 31 May 2021 06:23 PM PDT

I wanted to share my experience of sitting in deep meditation for 40 minutes LIVE.

When you listen to sounds of a specific frequency, your brain waves begin to synchronize with that frequency. Binaural (meaning "two ears" ) beats works because when listening to two slightly different tones our brains register a beat that measures at the difference between the two frequencies, taking us into a meditative state of mind.

This is why sound meditation is an effective way to induce a desired mental state by manipulating our brain waves.

You don't have to think about anything at all, you just listen and let your brain waves respond. It's a very natural and effective way to bring your mind to calm every day. It's best practiced with headphones and there are many free downloads or examples of binaural beats meditations available on the internet.

I was have conversations with my guides when I'm smiling and towards the end I was smiling cos I was hanging out with some cows 🐄 at the grass field with some birds 🦢 hanging around from previous meditation. I'm very happy I did this although it's creepy watching me.

You can watch the full live video i did here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EejE5W-UBm8

Meditation is making me feel more frustrated. Please help

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:02 AM PDT

    HI,

I have been meditating for quite some while (on and off) and have been doing it regularly everyday for the last 90 days or so. Over the last few days I am just struggling with my emotions a little. I hang on to negative emotions and thought patterns for the whole day and cant seem to let go of them. I try guided meditations as as escape but every time they say "let go" or "release your thoughts", I just cant do it and I cant seem to follow along and nothing gets accomplished out of it. This makes me even more annoyed and guilty.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Visual and body experience on second night of meditation

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:03 AM PDT

Tonight was my second meditation ever in my life that I took seriously and I experienced something I have never experienced before. I have been seeing white fog/cloud/smoke floating in the darkness when I begin my meditation with eyes closed. About half way through my 20 min meditation, I felt an explosive amount of energy/chill exerted throughout my whole body and the middle of my forehead (where the third eye supposed to be) started to "shake" profusely/violently. What do these things mean? Has anyone experienced this before? Why did that happen? Edit: any insight would help a lot. I am only a beginner!

Do you also have the perception that people around you somehow change after a meditation session?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:42 AM PDT

I don't think it's just a perception, though. People do change somehow. I just can't explain.

I start to believe in vibrations and law of attraction. It is not woo woo, I'm sure.

I cant sleep after meditating. Help!!!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:11 AM PDT

A day ago I started mediating again after a looooooooong time. This time I decided to kind of just do it to be able to relax. Before, when I first started meditating, I used to be so focused on making something happen during meditation to the point where I would frustrate myself. But this time I decided to not care so much for the outcome, I just wanted to feel relaxed before going to sleep. I meditated to this guided meditation and I noticed that I woke up and was actually productive yesterday! I made up a lot of school work and cleaned my room!!! Also washed my hair!!! So I decided to meditate to the same guided meditation before sleep, with no expectations so I wouldn't ruin it for myself. I did so for 30 minutes and then accommodated myself to fall asleep. But I couldn't??? And like I stayed with my eyes closed for maybe an hour and 30 minutes but like I was still awake, just waiting to fall asleep. And here i am, 6am and cant sleep. I don't feel tired but I feel a little worried because I don't know what have I done wrong?? I feel a little funny though. I don't know how to explain it. Help ;(

New to the world of meditation, looking for advice.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:04 AM PDT

Hello, I'm new to all this. I suffer from anxiety and panic attack disorders, as well as horrible depression. I wanted to know if meditation would help me with my self worth, self love, focus and over all getting my mind out of the prison I built. Also any audiobooks from audible would be amazing. (Not gifted to me but for me to look into and buy if I can. Just wanted to clarify not looking for handouts)

I call it - The Four Portals!

Imagine this for just a moment, you find yourself so aware that you are aware within a space where you are usually unaware, and standing before you are these 4 magical portals. Where would you be going?

    1 - A new year's party on the moon year, 2300.

    2 - Heaven.

3 - Relive your favorite memory.

4 - The Lost City Of Atlantis, " before it was lost "

Please note that this is not likely to come easily, but with, time, patience, discipline, trial and error, combined with intention, belief in yourself, and confidence in what you are doing, it's more than possible!

Because the all is mind! and within it, or... Mabey without it, ALL is possible.

" As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:12 PM PDT

I've been practicing meditation for a while now but just had this experience for the first time. I was sitting at the park and the water was hitting the shore… all of a sudden I felt like I was in a luscious green field on a coast and there were all these beautiful fall leaves. I can't explain what happened it's just like this place took over my thoughts and it felt so real. When I opened my eyes I was in shock of the contrast between what was in my eyes and what was in my thoughts. Any ideas?

How do you deal with drowsiness in general???

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:04 PM PDT

Hey guys I used to meditation very regularly a few months back with great results and long hours but now for some reason I can't sit for 10 mins without falling asleep. My focus on the breath is there but as soon as the clock hits, I am just consumed by drowsiness. Lately I've been meditating in different times, like 10 mins in the morning and another 10 at night, but I want to have a session where I could have an hour in the zone of mindfulness like I used to have. I'm suspecting that it may be the result of going through two major surgeries the previously and a bout of insomnia that largely affected the mindset. Don't hesitate to give any advice. Thank you.

    Mantra meditation vs body awareness

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:15 AM PDT

    Introduction

I've been practicing mantra meditation for 5 years now, which simply consists in meditating for 20 minutes two times a day repeating gently a simple mantra for the entire session duration. Also my master gave us another mantra to repeat 1000 times everyday to make the meditation process even more effective.

I truly believe in this master, he is surely awakened (or enlightened, I still don't know the difference very well) and has been teaching this technique for his entire life for free after reaching a higher state of consciousness in his 20s in India.

    Observations

Despite that, since I started meditating I've been reading a lot about the meditation process and inevitably encountered many different meditation techniques and discovered some other modern masters throughout the world, and the lowest common multiple of all techniques seems to be just the development of self awareness.

I hear a lot about being aware of the body internal processes like emotions, body sensations, thoughts, impulses etc, and also that developing a "detached observational skill" is a key point in this process (by detached I don't mean that you mustn't be present in your sensations, but rather that you have to be able to see them and have the choice of not reacting to them).

    Considerations and questions

By meditating with the mantra I feel like the meditation acts on you without you knowing how it is acting, making you more aware with time, while with techniques that tells you to just be mindful of your sensations and what is happening in the present moment I feel like you are working more consciously on you resilience. In a sense I feel like mantra is like "taking a distance" from the world, while the mindful techniques take the opposite approach by "forcing" you to stay in the present moment.

Also, I have a pretty scientific mind, so I'd really like to know why a mantra is used and how can be possible that different mantra can have different impacts on the person.

I know these two approaches are not mutually exclusive, when you don't meditate with the mantra you can just work on being mindful, but I'd like to know if there is a better or more right technique over the other and if both can lead to be more conscious of oneself.

Thank you in advance and have a nice day!
