Diet, energy levels throughout the day, and what to eat before yoga

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 08:56 PM PDT

Hi there, I just wanted to ask what others have found with the above? (and below if relevant!)

My story: 18 months ago I was about 40kg heavier and went on a juice fast (google movie Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead) to lose weight which worked wonders. I had also been consuming way too much alcohol for 15 years and quit that at the same time. When I came off the juice fast I went plant-based but really struggled with fatigue and energy levels (and head fog) for about a year. Had blood tests done but my doctor said everything was OK incl B12 levels). Around 3 months ago I started to eat brown rice as my main carb and since then I have been much better (was getting worried for a while). About 2 hours before yoga I will have a small bowl (a few spoons) of brown rice with 1/3 avocado mixed in and I now feel really good through practice (no lightheadedness). I think a lot of my hassles were to do with my body metabolism changing with age (especially once >40), relying on alcohol as an energy source for all those years, some carbs just not doing it for me, and my body adjusting to led classes 4 or 5 times a week. It's actually been a difficult transition to work through, especially as I did not know what was happening at the time (and my Dr could not help!).

PS Sweet Potato is also something which works really well for me.

Hamstrings tightened up due to overuse - bad thing?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 08:21 PM PDT

Hi there, I have been back at yoga for 10 days now and have done my first mysore classes which are great (so different to a led class). After the first week my hamstrings started to really tighten up due to all the stretching so I had to pull back for a few days with Janu & Paschi etc. I wanted to ask is this necessarily a bad thing (to go through a cycle like this with muscle groups), or do I need to drop my general intensity a little with the hamstring stretches? Many thanks :-)

Those who champion non-attachment as non-engagement misunderstand Metta. Discuss

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 09:40 AM PDT

I feel strongly compelled to try and engage the "yoga community" in the world. Loving kindness is of primary importance in the practice of yoga. To practice Yoga we must practice Metta. To practice metta we must practice compassion and active participation in the movement against hatred and injustice.

I don't wish to start arguments, only civil discourse as it relates to Metta, yoga, and the state of racial injustice and police violence in the world.

As a subtext- I have never felt like there was such a thing as a Yoga "community" and addressing these things will go a long way to encourage me among others.

    Edit:

I was hoping to have a conversation with yoga people about loving kindness- instead what I got was derision and thinly veiled combative threats.

The Dali Lama himself said that there was a serious problem with compassion in America. Come on guys, can't you just talk about violence in our communities and how it affects us? do we have to feel like every conversation is an exposure to actual danger, more than just feeling vulnerabilities and emotional turmoil?

Lt me ask you guys this very personal question: Do you feel like the yoga community is De-segregated?

I hope you guys can do better, treat each other with respect and you will get respected as well.
