If you're not getting it, you're stuck to one of the things on the screen of awareness and you'll never solve the problems in there. The film will just play on - whether you identify with one of the actors within the film or not.

Stop spending time trying to search within this dream of the movie playing on the screen and just realise that you are that on which it all appears. That's why it is no event, no great awakening, it's a very simple, very subtle, ah yes, of course I'm not that small dot on the screen, I'm the entire screen.

How else would you be aware of all appearances if you where to be any one of the single appearances.

    Surgery from trying half lotus

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 04:59 PM PDT

Yep. I thought I could force my body to get used to it if I tried 'just sitting through the pain' for long enough. Bad idea. I hope most of you aren't as shortsighted as me, but just in case I'll leave this warning here:

You can't force your body to get used to it.

Or maybe you can. But I couldn't. (Depends on the force). It was great for a while; the stability felt great, like being locked down into the cushion. I decided that I'd adapt to the posture and wrench my right leg into that position as often as I could. Watching tv, playing video games, whatever. It was uncomfortable but not unbearable. I figured my hip would just accept it and then one day lo and behold I could sit in half lotus for however long I pleased.

One day lo and behold I can't sit up straight at all. A year of seeing doctor's varied attempts at diagnosing the pain in my groin/abdomen/hip/mostofme later and I arrived at an orthopedist saying I had Illiopsoas Bursitis w/ a side of "snapping hip!"

Turned out it was completely treatment resistant. I tried PT, steroid shots, the works etc. Ended up needing a hip anthroscopy tendon release. That's a fairly conservative surgery but surgery nonetheless.

I'm 3 weeks into recovery and it's a slowww process. I haven't been able to meditate sitting up for almost a year and am just now regaining the ability to sit in a chair without feeling like my gut is made of rocks.

I really hope anyone who's thinking along the same lines as I was a year ago—that lotus is doable with enough violent effort—isn't thinking along those lines. But if they are:..:. Please don't. Just go slowly. Warm up properly and love yourself. Physical meditation injury is indeed possible. Be smart. Don't do what I did. ❤️🙏

It is simply sitting silently, witnessing the thoughts, passing before you!

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 05:46 PM PDT

Just witnessing, not interfering not even judging, because the moment you judge you have lost the pure witness. The moment you say "this is good, this is bad," you have already jumped onto the thought process.

It takes a little time to create a gap between the witness and the mind. Once the gap is there, you are in for a great surprise, that you are not the mind, that you are the witness, a watcher.

And this process of watching is the very alchemy of real religion. Because as you become more and more deeply rooted in witnessing, thoughts start disappearing. You are, but the mind is utterly empty.

That's the moment of enlightenment. That is the moment that you become for the first time an unconditioned, sane, really free human being.

I am not my thoughts. Only thoughts prevent myself from being enlightened.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:46 AM PDT

It really is this simple. You already are free and fulfilled and everything else is just a thought.

Thoughts are always based on some purpose, some goal to achieve- do this, search for happiness... ect ect, but such purpose is an illusion. The only purpose of life is to live. The only purpose of Being Alive is just to be Alive, very simple.

Now your mind after reading this may come with many excuses and you may choose to believe them and suffer or not to believe them and be happy. You are happines itself, just dreaming that you need something other than what you already are.

Let's stop believing our thoughts and start to really live life as it is. Peace and Love to all of you.

I had the best meditation experience of my life last night

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 04:05 PM PDT

So I had a lot of thoughts going through my head so I decided to sit down and meditate. At first I let myself think and resolved my problems in my head for the time then I began focusing on absolutely nothing which was surprisingly easy for some reason. About 15-20 minutes after that I began to feel pure ecstasy. I cannot explain the extreme joy I felt. It was indescribable. I felt such a strong appreciation for myself and life and I had the hugest smile the whole time. I felt the energy if life all around me and in Betty atoms. It was a mystical experience and I just hope all of you experience something like that. It was like being high without taking anything. I know it's different for everyone but I really hope every human gets to experience the ecstasy I encountered. Peace.

You may not even be aware when you're becoming irritable and snapping at people - checking in regularly with how you're feeling can help you to know when to take a break rather than react immediately

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 05:37 PM PDT

We all try our best to speak kindly to the people around us but during stressful periods we can sometimes get a bit snippy (especially if someone is clicking their pen repeatedly). Its OK to have a bad day - but we can limit the impact of our grumpiness by regularly checking in with how we're feeling and taking time to tend to our difficult feelings. Nothing is more important than your peace - and by working on your peace through meditation your words will be kinder, making the world a better place.

    From today's /r/science post

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 09:27 AM PDT

"You can change your brain, if you want to.

You are mostly your default mode network (DMN), not your whole brain. The rest of the experiences in your mind seem external to your attention (thoughts, ideas, emotions, ephiphanies, etc.), although you can engage with them when you want to, as though you have free will.

All of these objects reside in the rest of your brain where they exist as countless tiny networks having fun working hard on problems and thinking about things without your input being necessary. During normal waking consciousness, you can interact with these networks as though they were something outside of you. By driving your attention, you can carefully drive the energy given to some of these networks (your attention = more blood for those happy neurons working hard).

During the psychedelic state, your DMN disintegrates into these other networks to the extent that the difference between you and the rest of your brain begins to dissolve. This dramatic increase in entropy isn't totally foreign to the brain as it deals with this concept on a regular basis, and entropy increases dramatically during REM sleep during which normal psychedelic-related processes are undertaken.

People often mislabel this feeling of integrating with the rest of the brain as integrating with the universe, collective unconscious, supreme beings, etc. Really, the various psychedelics (as well as other drugs in general) are inducing a novel state that hijacks already present systems (endogenous DMT and endocannabinoids immediately come to mind). The brain then attempts to stabilize this novel state by decreasing the entropy. See the NK Model for more theorycraft.

Meditation is self-induced endogenous drug use; an inactive body with an active brain, just like REM sleep. Although most Westerners practice mindfulness meditation, it is only one type of neuromanipulation.

During mindfulness meditation, the human specifically gives less energy to the DMN and instead allows all the smaller circuits in the brain to speak up. This can feel nearly identical to the drug-induced state, although it is not nearly as stable or easy to maintain without pharmacological assistance.

However, if the human were to focus on Karuna Meditation, they might instead actively increase the strength of their DMN and the localities/networks in the brain related to compassion while decreasing the entropy in everything else. This very different practice would still lead to the same manipulation of brain states and the sense of self in my interpretation of the NK model. "

Something new happened to me during meditation

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:02 AM PDT

This morning I did a 15 minute meditation and during the meditation I experienced a new feeling. Not only did I feel gigantic but I also felt I was in open space.

I have been meditating on and off for a few years but trying to make a morning routine of it.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Thank you.

Letting go of hate and cynicism

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 05:19 AM PDT

    Hey guys

I recently have identified a subconscious belief which I am sure has been influencing me negatively for most of my life. Its the belief that humans are inherently evil and cannot be trusted.

It makes me feel genuine hatred and disdain for a majority of people, which makes it hard for me to build relationships etc.. I generally avoid indulging in a victim mentality like this but sometimes, it just gets too strong.

Whenever I find reasons to not hate humans, I have thoughts, past experiences and beliefs coming up that contradict it and make me think otherwise.

As a side note, I have worked over several years to let go of my past for good. I processed most of my traumas, also started a new life, with new and better people. And for a majority of the time, I do feel good and am at peace with world.

But this cynicism wont let me go. I just want to live a good life and be at peace.

    Any advice?

    Meditating all day?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:50 PM PDT

Can I technically meditate at random points in the day without closing my eyes or going somewhere peaceful? For example, if walking somewhere and I'm having thoughts, can I not just start focusing on my breathing instead of my thoughts? Is there something wrong with this?

    Star Ship Introspection

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:49 AM PDT

The Star Ship Introspection lies in slumber at it's docking station awaiting you, the commander. Every single journey starts with a single step, as it did with the first astronauts who set foot on the moon. There was a time when the stars seemed very distant and untouchable. Sometimes the analysis of self too can seem an insurmountable task. Just like the astronauts of the past, you are about to set forth on a journey of equal magnitude and proportion.

If you are reading this, you are taking that first step in the right direction towards self discovery. Hence the fittingly named star ship you will be piloting. The Star ship Introspection is the vehicle of self discovery. Within it are the parts of yourself that will aid you in this task. There are the various parts of the ship itself, they are the mind's stage where you will meet and get to know the various personnel that represent facets of your mind worth examining in the self.

As we begin your tour of the Star ship introspection I am going to introduce you to a simple exercise that will allow you to relax and become open to the possibilities.

You look around you at the open space. Various nozzles protrude from the walls and ceiling. There are vents below you.

Clearing your mind before doing your self reflection is just as important as a decontamination procedure before boarding a ship. I am going to guide you through this mental decontamination procedure that you can do anywhere or anytime. Before performing this process you should find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed.

Preferably you should lie down, but you can do this visualization in any position you find comfortable. You are entering the decontamination chamber guided by me, your pilot.

The procedure is simple, you will first see the lights dim and the nozzles will begin to spray a fine cleansing mist. When this is finished, you will feel refreshed as the lights come on and the decontamination concludes.

Feel the air jets blowing away all that old stuff. The dead weight of your past as you become completely open to new experiences. You would like to be open to new experiences that can change and transform you right? The jets move up and down on a rack blowing from the top of your head down to your toes. Imagine that your worries are like tiny dust particles attracted to each other. When they are blown away there will be nothing to attract but positive particles.
Enjoy the feeling as the air passes over you of every muscle relaxing and opening up, letting go, relaxing. You don't have to do anything in particular at the moment as you listen to the sound of the jets washing away your problems and enjoy the sensations.

When you feel the cool air blowing over your skin or clothing you can be reminded of how comfortable you feel in this moment. Let your mind wander freely in this moment, acknowledge the thoughts that come to you, and let them go for now. There will be plenty of time to work on them later. In the decontamination chamber, it is just you and the cool air washing over you, washing away your problems.

This is where you begin your tour.

(This is a guided imagery, meditation, visualization thing that I wrote for a book. I Just want to hear peoples thoughts on it. )

    Weird feeling while meditating

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:37 AM PDT

Hello, I currently take 75 mg of Zoloft and have just recently gotten into meditation the past 3 days. As I've been meditating, I feel a lot better and the many depressive thoughts that I have are being muted and is honestly working better than the meditation. However, I just woke up in the middle of the night and feel super agitated and have a lot of anxiety going through right now which has not happened in a while. Could this be due to Serotonin Syndrome? Could meditation cause too much serotonin and what would you guys recommend?

    It felt great.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 12:28 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

my life is pretty shitty at the moment. I often feel alone and there is no on who I can really talk to. And I've heard that meditation can bring some peace into your mind. I am a victim of my own thoughts and there a nearly 0 moments where I can live without overthinking. After my Home-Workout I decided to do some meditation. I've put on some 00.10 Hz sounds on (I've got an App where you can listen to Binaural sounds...) and sat down. I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate how I breath in and out. I think I did it right. Everytime a thought came up, I simply said "no" and tried to concentrate on my breathing. After sometime I saw many colors. It looked like a rainbow or whatever. But it was nice. I felt pretty good. And after some time. It felt like I am in a big white room without any negative thoughts... I don't if its supposed to be like that. But I liked it and I may try that out more often.

And I hope I can get some tricks from this subreddit here.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.

How to be mindful when not meditating?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 06:50 AM PDT

I really want to be more in the present and more mindful in my everyday life, not just when meditating, but it doesn't seem to carry over. Does this just take more time and practice? Does it ever become second nature or is it always an active practice throughout the day?

    Don't meditate to fix procrastination

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 03:10 PM PDT

Like everyone, I occasionally procrastinate. It's occasionally said that meditation could be useful for reducing procrastination. However, I think there's an important caveat.

Procrastination is really just an emotional regulation glitch. You put off doing an unpleasant thing by doing something vaguely stimulating (like YouTube or Twitter or whatever), but your brain doesn't realize that doing so will cause even more suffering in the long term, than just doing the unpleasant thing right away. Obviously, being mindfull helps with recognizing and getting over your brain's negative reaction to something you have to do. However, when you feel yourself procrastinating on something, I think it's counterproductive, to sit down to meditate with the idea that doing so will make the negative feeling go away.

During a recent overwhelming month at work, when I caught myself procrastinating on an unpleasant task, I would sit down to meditate formally for ~10 minutes. At the end, I felt exactly the same, because I had just allowed the procrastination to brew for 10 more minutes. By sitting down to meditate, I was just procrastinating more!

Formal meditation has its time and place (for me and others, first thing in the morning). But if you struggle with procrastination, learn from me, and don't let meditation become counterproductive. When you catch yourself putting something off, realize what you're doing, close your eyes, and take a breath or two. Then, just get back to work. You can meditate later.

Guided meditation in languages other than you own

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:08 PM PDT

Hello, everyone. I'm from Brazil and I'm getting started with meditation, and guided meditation seems like a good place to start. Since It is much easier to find quality content in english, I'd like to know if the fact that english is not my native language could have some sort of negative impact on the process. I consider myself fluent enough and I can definitely understand what the person is saying, specially when It is said in a slow and calm manner. But I do need to pay more attention when listening a foreign language. Is that okay or should I stick to audios in portuguese?

    Thanks in advance :)

You are not a bundle of thoughts, feelings and sensations. Find out your true nature and be eternaly free.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:27 PM PDT

Thoughts, feelings and body sensations come and go, but you don't come and go with them. Simply by the fact that you notice their comings and goings you are AWARE of them.

What can be AWARE of AWARENESS ? Simply, only AWARENESS. Don't give much Importance to your mind and be more interested in who you are, what can be more interesting to know?

It's very simple and actually very intimate. You don't have to climb Mountains to be enlightened 😂. You already are perfect, just notice it. There is no need for anything else other than noticing awareness. Everything that needs to happen will happen from this natural state.

Trust yourself, be brave, in the beggining the mind would want to keep your attention, and try to sabotage your freedom. It's okay, don't panic or be afraid of it. Don't be to serious and don't create anything. No effort,no tention. Don't forget that you already are aware. You will not notice your nature if you keep identifying with egoic reactions. Just relax and your nature will reveal itself to you. Trust me. Thank you for wanting to know yourself, it's the most beautiful thing you can ever discover.

    Have a wonderful day <3

Yogi House - A living community designed to support your meditation practice

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:17 AM PDT

Years ago, I made a blueprint for a planned community of 6 to 8 people to rent and live in a large house together to support and enhance each other's serious meditation practice. It never came to fruition, but I believe I will make it a reality in a few years. Has anyone here ever lived in such a place? What do you think of the idea? Is it something you would consider joining?

If you've ever experienced meditation retreats, especially longer ones, many of the supportive elements that some incorporate would likewise be part of daily living at Yogi House. Periods of silence, periods of encouraged self-practice, periods of group practice, someone to ring a wake-up bell each morning, periods to do house chores while practicing mindfulness, occasional group meals.

Interested potential roommates would need to agree to make participation in scheduled house activities a priority. Although, all house activities, and expected behavior, would be discussed, examined, altered, and agreed upon by everyone. House communication, in order to secure a safe practice environment, would also be a priority.

The goal is to support each individual's regular and serious practice. Daily scheduled group meditation periods help ensure at least some daily practice. Having people you see daily who also practice would further improve one's likelihood of practicing. House would be physically set up to facilitate practice, with equipment and a number of spaces to sit/walk/move for individual practice.

I'm very curious about other people's thoughts of this idea.

I could provide an example daily and weekly schedule for the imaginary roommates, if you would like.

    Thanks!

Question: Heart rate accelerates when I try to breathe steadily and slowly

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 11:53 AM PDT

I have pretty severe anxiety and have turned to meditation to help ease it, though I don't have much experience with it yet. One of the things that triggers some anxiety is when my heart rate increases. And I notice when I sit down to meditate and try to focus on my breathing, I feel my heart rate increase as I inhale, and drop back down when I exhale. It doesn't trigger a panic attack or anything like that, it's more of distraction. I'm just curious if this is normal or if there's a way to keep it from happening. Any insight from more experienced people would be much appreciated.
