When you're being criticized, notice when defensiveness starts boiling up - you may be missing a chance to grow

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 08:47 AM PST

How do you feel when someone criticizes you? Maybe it prompts you to start beating yourself up. Nobody likes to be criticized, especially if you have perfectionist tendencies.

Its important to think about the source of the criticism - it makes a huge difference whether it comes from a friend that we know cares about us or someone that might have other motivations. Whether the criticism is delivered with kindness or rudeness, listen to what they have to say. Don't react immediately, breathe. if you're feeling defensive just notice and acknowledge that feeling. Its really important to take your time, so you might want to acknowledge to the person that you've heard what they've said and walk away. Take some time to let your mind settle before you tackle what's going on.

The golden rule is to treat yourself with kindness, even if you think you've made a mistake. Non-judgement is key - you don't have to take a view of yourself or the critical person; accept that they're feeling the way they are and that you're feeling the way you are without judging.

So now you've stepped away and now you're giving some consideration to what the person has said. Ask yourself the key question - is it true? What good can I take from what I heard? And that's up to you - if there's genuinely nothing of value to take that's fine but there's usually something for us to learn even if its not what the person was trying to communicate.

The last thing to bear in mind is that there's a difference between criticism and abuse. If you are being regularly unfairly criticised in a destructive way you should know that this is not OK. If they attack you, you don't have to justify who you are, you don't have to explain, you don't have to defend. But most of all you don't have to argue. If they don't listen, protect yourself by stepping back from the relationship - nothing is more important than your peace and your mental health.

Wow, just meditated for the first time in 3 years and I gained some insight I'm sure all of us have experienced.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 10:09 AM PST

Its been a while so decided to do 10-15mins of meditations and jeez. I never realized how messed up my brain has gotten in the last 3 years. I closed my eyes and within 30 seconds of focusing on the breath my reflexes to grab my phone and look at it were intense. This happened around a dozen times during this meditation session and I never realized how much I reflexively go for my phone. I am just shocked and a little disappointed in myself. Not to mention that these few minutes felt like eternity. Guess I got some work to do.

Meditation happens throughout our daily lives

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 04:12 AM PST

There is an insight that i've found recently, it might be mistaken because i'm not yet an advanced meditation practitioner so take everything i say with a grain of salt.

Meditation does not have to happen only when you're sitting with legs crossed still and not moving or on top of a yoga mat or even walking on a path back and forth. There's no ritual needed for Meditation. Though those aspects hugely helps towards Meditation, it is not a necessity- it is not a rule you have to follow.

Meditation is that simple "snapping" back to reality with concentrated and clear mind. It is that simple re-directing/centering your awareness into the present moment.

I noticed as i became more consistent with my Meditation practices that whenever i was in a stressful situation and my mind started wondering, there's this "awareness" that comes in and reminded me that i wasn't in the present moment and that i was creating suffering all on my own. Then as soon as i started re-directing/centering and focusing my awareness into the present moment, things drastically cleared out. The situation that was stressful became very light and ease, though the obstacle is still there- i realized that it wasn't at all about the "obstacle" that i was facing.

Meditation can happen whenever, wherever, in whatever situation you are in. Your mind might trick you when you're faced with heavy tasks and are currently occupied that you're unable to "Meditate" in that moment. But believe me when i tell you, Meditation can always happen during whatever activity you are doing. While working out, while arguing with difficult people, while completing your difficult job- while doing whatever difficult task you're doing. All you have to do is to watch- and just watch.

I discovered this recently while completing a difficult task, having to pour 50kg of hot boiling wax into plenty of individual baking pan. In that moment, under heavy stress my mind would occasionally reminds me of Meditation and then re-directing/centering my awareness into the present moment. The stress and pressure i was experiencing, evaporates drastically. The burden/struggle of the work is still there granted, but what really matters is only in the mind.

This gives me further understanding of the Buddha's teaching: What's outside can not really affect to what's inside.

    How you lose energy

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 07:15 PM PST

    A mini-piece I recently wrote.

Thinking consumes enormous amounts of energy, most of which is wasted on thinking about the past, wondering about what others think of us, conjuring up unreal dangers, mental fights, excessive worrying, over-analyzing.

There is nothing wrong with thinking that is focused on working on a project, learning, practicing a craft or playing. But when thinking is not being used to achieve a goal, it is wasteful.

We could do 10 times more if thinking was focused on the task at hand. We use coffee and stimulants, not because we need new energy, but because we waste so much.

Realize that the past has no impact on the present because the present generates the past. Realize that we live a very safe world but our amygdala was trained to escape from lions so biologically we are prone to overreact to today's danger. Realize that you're wasting most of the energy you have in a day on useless thinking. Be present to the energy being dissipated

We think 100% of the time we are awake. But let this be your goal: to think 10% of the time you are awake and be free from thought the rest of the time.

Of course this seems impossible but it is the next jump in evolution. When man first started thinking, he only thought a small amount of the time, but the next jump is in a way a return to that state reduced thinking at a much high level of consciousness. The state beyond thinking.

Today the "long term effects" of meditation kicked in

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:07 PM PST

in advance: my english isnt the best

Today I picked up my medication and took the tram home. The medication was in an extra cool bag which I usually dont have on me.

Half a minute after I got off I realised that my bag was still in the tram.

I was just thinking "FUUUUUUCK" and waited for the panic to kick in, like when you realised that you didnt do homework and knew you were fucked. I gave it a few seconds.. but nothing big happened. I didnt start panicking as usual. I was calm, I just lost 3k worth of medicine in the tram and a shit ton of problems could be ahead of me but I was oddly calm.

In the end I called central office and they figured out which tram I took and the tram driver found my bag. I got lucky this time, but it was nice to see that I had my emotions under control. That and the central office guy and the tram driver were very very helpful and courteous.

    “Focus on the Breath”

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 08:57 PM PST

In meditation I hear this so often as it is such a common practice for mindfulness. Whenever I get caught wondering "what comes from focusing completely on my breath?" this quote from Rumi comes to mind:

"You think you are alive because you breathe air? Shame on you, that you are alive in such a limited way."

It helped me so much to realize why this focus is important, and to realize we are so much more than this physical body. I hope maybe this will help someone else too 🤍.

    Breathing properly

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 11:28 PM PST

I recently have started meditating because I have chronic anxiety. I'm a shallow breather and when I try to take slower deeper breaths I just hyperventilate. Can anyone help me?

    Posture guidance needed

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 06:35 PM PST

    Hello.

I am in need of serious guidance on my meditation posture.

I have been meditating for months, sitting in the burmese position on a firm, ~7 inch tall pillow. My shoulders naturally want to hunch over completely, which is uncomfortable and distracting. If I try to sit up, my back ends up sore and uncomfortable again. I have tried lying down (always fall asleep), sitting in a chair (same back issues), sitting on lower, softer pillows (back strain to stay upright becomes even MORE distracting), and NOTHING helps.

What do I do? My sessions inevitably turn into me focusing on my posture every single time and it's starting to feel pointless.

    Thank you.

How does meditation help our body scientifically?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 12:41 AM PST

I've already read the benefits we get from meditation but can anyone explain how does meditation affect our body or brain functions? Like what biochemical changes do we observe while we meditate?

A moment of feeling completely grateful

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 03:37 AM PST

I did a short mindful guided meditation last night. I was focusing on my breath, letting thoughts pass and all of sudden I had this immense feeling of appreciation and gratefulness to be able to have this moment of meditation. I've never experienced anything like this before and it just came out of nowhere. It lead me to just cry in happiness and really experience the moment. Just thought I'd like to share it with you guys :)

Restarted meditation and it makes me aroused.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:01 PM PST

    I'm being 100% sincere here.

As the title states I started meditating again recently and I feel sexually aroused soon after I start. I was never a regular with my meditation practice so I don't have a ton of experience with it.

This time all I can focus on is wanting to take care of what's happening in my lady parts!

Has anyone experienced this? What should I do to stop it?

Meditation happens when see that there are no psychological issues, there are only material, physical, actual actions from moment to moment.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 01:51 AM PST

Energy is dissipated when you complain - 'why it is so'.

    Any action is reaction.

Whole energy is gathered when you see - 'It is so'.

    Action happens.

How do you turn off your thoughts during meditation

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 03:58 AM PST

I've been meditating in silence for 15 minutes. I've done 10 days in a row.

However when I mediate my mind is racing with thoughts, which makes me think that I'm not focusing on the meditation as much as I should be. Does anyone have any ideas about how to turn off my thoughts?

An interesting new way to enhance your practice. 1 min pause after every one hour.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 01:09 AM PST

    Hello fellow meditators,

I have been practicing meditation for 11 years and still learning new things about meditation and myself every day.

One technique i would like to share with everyone is the 1 min pause after every one hour.

Set an alarm on your smartphone for every one hour. Eg. An alarm for 7am, 8am, 9am,....., 7pm, 8pm. (I hope you get my point.)

As soon as your alarm rings, pause for 1 minute whatever you are doing and watch your thoughts. Just observe their quality or quality of your action if you are doing something.

You will be surprised to see what you are thinking without even being aware.

Moreover, you can take just one thought, a powerful affirmation, that you would like to incorporate in your sub-conscious mind. After the first few seconds of observing your thoughts, you can use the rest of that 1 minute by a powerful affirmation and by visualising the same affirmation.

This is a powerful method and sparing 10-12 minutes every day (1 min after each hour for 10-12) is nothing compared to the benefits of this practice.

    Love to fellow meditators.

    Peace ☮️ out.

    Meditation as motivation

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 12:49 AM PST

It's maybe simple and obvious, but this realization hit me the other day while meditating. Usually I try to accept and let go my thoughts while concentrating on my breathing, but this time I noticed that all that my mind was putting in front of me was mostly the things I was exposed to in the recent past (that day or the day before): conversations and relations with people, what I read on the twitter, reddit or mail, clips or shows that I watched, messages I received and sent and so on... It was a strange feeling to realize something so obvious - that it is indeed true what surrounds us in all aspects of our life actually makes us as a person (individual). So it was very motivating for me and gave me lots of courage to think through my daily actions in order to throw away junk brain food, avoid toxic people and relationships, avoid negative thoughts and to be less critical to myself, as much as I can. I know it may sound trivial, but again it was very enlightening and motivating for me.

Anyone experienced suppressed appetite after they started meditating?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 08:58 PM PST

I started meditating 10-20min/day about a week ago. Ever since, I've been choosing to eat fibrous foods and found that my appetite is killed. I don't feel that hungry anymore and used to feel full after 2500 cals. Now I'm satisfied on 1500 and I exercise 30min-1hr daily. Is this usual?

Getting into meditation - would love some advice!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 06:43 PM PST

Have recently been feeling extremely tired throughout the day (even after sleeping 10+ hours). I'm going through a particularly stressful/anxiety-inducing time in my life, and feel anxiety about everything - from work emails to meetings to even minor decisions. I'd like to try to start meditating to see if that helps with some of my anxiety, but every time I sit down to try it, a million thoughts entire my mind (to-do lists, what I'm going to do right after I finish meditating, etc) and it's really discouraging. Any tips, tools, or resources for absolute beginners?

What does this mean? Higher self meditation.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 12:34 AM PST

Okey so long story short i was meditating yesterday and i wanted to try and contact my higher self. It was a weird thing for me since well my werry close friend presented them selfs from the light. This is the story.

The room was white through out the room. There were old windows on both sides of the room with a door behind me where i entered this room. There is a table with to seats that looks just ass old as everything ells. I pull out a shair, sit and seeing a werry bright light on the other seat hovering. It starts to take form of my friend who ive feel WERRY connected to, and shes told me that she doesnt understand it but her anxiety and depression alleays seem to "go away" when i enter her life somehow, anyway.

I start seeing her black hair take form, then the top of the head, eyes, untill i realize who it was and then i got the most esthatic or euphoric happines ive felt, i started smiling and tears of joy. The feeling was WERRY poverful because i could feel my hearbeat more like a thudding aswell. We didnt talk we just more sat there and enjoyed our company until it was time for me to go.

I dont know what this means and would like some clarity in all of this, cheers ❤️

    Ruminating or observing?
