    Build neck flexibility after injury

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:41 PM PST

    Hello!

First of all let me say that I am super grateful for this group. I started with the basic stretches and I can already see nice progress. I could never touch my toes while standing, now i can! 🔥

To my question: is there a good upper back/neck routine? More than one year ago i did a wrong move in gym and i could barely move my neck for weeks, had nausea, etc. got it checked by a multitude of doctors, telling me that nothing serious but that i need rest. However today, when doing standard exercises such as pull-ups, i feel that the general flexibility of my neck area is very limited. I guess because of this incident...

Do you have any good programs/exercises i could gently start with? Especially in light of my neck history?

Thanks so much for your inputs! Also appreciate any experience sharing from you.

Ps: i am an office worker, usually working loooong hours on my excel sheets. :)

Stretching in the morning when I am not as flexible?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 05:08 PM PST

Hi everyone! I am in the process of increasing my flexibility and hopefully be able to do the splits next year. I usually stretch first thing in the morning after a 20 cardio session but today I decided to do my stretching at night after a workout and found I am way more flexible at night.

My question is: will I still gain flexibility and improve my splits if I am stretching when I am less flexible in the morning?

Spine / upper back “stretching” sensation

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

I've just started yoga semi-intensely, from a month ago. I've been doing my full body, but also trying to focus on my back, with the plow pose.

I notice that afterwards and on days I rest, I have a stretching feeling on my upper back. It's not painful at all and almost feels good. It feels like all of the vertebrae in my spine are being tugged apart, or like I'm growing taller. As I said, it's not painful, and I think it is from the plow because I can feel this sensation increase while in that pose.

Has anyone else felt this, and is it safe or a sign I should slow down/stop? Before starting yoga I would often think that a ( very very low power )medieval torture rack would feel good, as in my whole upper body felt compressed and shrunk. Possibly this sensation is my body "uncompressing" it's self?

    Feeling Strangely Euphoric After Stretching

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:34 AM PST

Does anyone else feel weirdly euphoric after stretching?

For me, sometimes after sitting down, I get up and stretch my arms up for a good 5 seconds, and then, I feel extremely dizzy, so i often have to do it by my bed so I can lie down...and the feeling of spinning while knowing Im sitting still on the bed is too fun, and I just feel so relaxed but also my thoughts are all over.

It feels like my head is going every which way but its fun, and today when it happened, I had a bunch of random thoughts on the bed while I felt like I was spinning. And they were so complicated and out of nowhere, and nonsenical, but interesting for sure.

So is there an explanation for this? Anyone else feel this way?

"Youre dehydrated" I drink a few glasses of water with flavoring a day, so even if I am slightly dehydrated (idk if thats even the case), I doubt that its the main factor.

    Deep squat flexibility question

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 11:33 AM PST

Years of riding a fixed gear bike(bike messenger) and weightlifting with little to no stretching routine has left me with incredibly shortened hip flexors and tight restricted abductors. My hips feel like cement basically. Oddly, I have a decent range of motion moving forward, I can do pretty deep forward lunges easily but basically no range of motion side to side when I try to do horse stance or Cossack squats. To work on flexibility I've been trying to stay sitting in a deep squat position as much as I can, but after three months of at least 30 minutes a day, I can sit in it comfortably, but still need the assistance of hanging on to a rack or a pole or else I immediately fall backwards, like hard. It's very frustrating. I'm just wondering what exactly is causing this, is it ankle mobility or tight hip and adductors that cause me to fall backwards in the squat?

How to make front splits start feeling like home?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST

Hi everyone! I've had my full front splits (both sides) for 9 months now. My routine is mainly long hip opening holds (lizard, single-legged seated forward fold, and straddle for ~2 minutes each). I'm always able to get all the way to the ground, but it is seriously still the most intense feeling stretch ever! I can stay in the split for about a minute, but it is intense. Do you have any advice/active stretch recommendations to make it feel more comfortable? My goal is to be able to drop into my splits (I'm an aerialist), but right now, that feels so far away. Thank you so much!!

So I’m trying to get my splits and for the last couple of days my right knee kinda feels a bit weird

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 12:59 PM PST

it's not a gut wrenching pain or anything. It's just feels a bit funny. Like if i try to stand really straight ( similar to locking my knees) it feels a bit off and weird. Should i stop stretching for my splits? Should I take a break? Also how do I know I'm over-stretching? Any help/advice is really appreciate, thank you!

If my only goal is a good pike and a good straddle, is it necessary to train different flexibility like the front splits, too?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 09:20 AM PST

Basically what it says. I am doing calisthenics and want to improve my straddle to make the Straddle Front Lever / Straddle Planche easier. (Example https://www.mpcalisthenics.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Full-Straddle-Planche.jpg.webp) I also want to improve my Pike to be able to train for the V-sit. (https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-50da8883eced79024ac8c0daf118670e)

Is it necessary to train any other flexibility for it? For example the front split? I am concerned that if I only focus on pike and middle split that the flexibility in other areas can become a limiting factor, or is that not the case?
